Chapter 13- Battle Born

image

"Once upon a time, I swore I had a heart Long before the world I know tore it all apart Once upon a time, there was a part of me I shared Years before they took away the part of me that cared."

Nyala had meant to go to her bedroom but she ended up wandering the hallways of the living area. The fact that she lost control like that bothered her and it bothered her greatly. She was supposed to be the one that kept her head on straight, the voice of reason but Yoongi’s words had gotten to her much more than she cared to admit. It was enough to break through her iron will that she had practiced so much over the decades. Hell, if she were to be fair--it started from when she realized that her path was being obscured from her when she was with the pirates.

It was when she impulsively decided she was going on this crusade against them. Then spiraled out of control when she met the Paths, a name that she’d coined herself when she realized that they had the same goals or the same paths as her. One, in particular, that seemed to fit so perfectly on top of hers. Without knowing, her feet had found themselves in front of his door and her body almost frustrated in a sense to continue their previous conversation. Her hand rose up to touch the chime on the side, to let him know that she was out there. After a moment, the door suddenly whisked open to reveal Jimin shirtless and hair sopping wet. His face had been dark until he realized who it was behind the door.

Almost immediately, his face brightened as he stepped aside to let her in. Nyala walked in, curious about what all he had set up in the small area. She hadn’t gotten to know much about everyone since getting aboard but was slowly starting to figure things out about each of them. In particular, Jimin. He was usually quiet and helpful but also possessed a playful streak that came out when dealing with Jungkook or Jin. Yoongi was much like a guardian, one who hid behind his tough exterior to protect the others. She realized that but it was taken entirely too far and it was what caused the fracture in their relationship now. Jimin looked a bit tired but hid everything well, too well in fact. She also noticed that underneath the clothes, there were patterns across his body that if not looked at properly--they would have been mistaken for another type of tattoos.

No, they were old scars.

They etched along his body, across his chest. She had to wonder what all happened to him to receive such extensive procedures? She sat down on his bed, eyes watching him as he walked to take a towel from a cabinet to dry his hair off with. It was a comfortable silence between them as they just existed in that space. It wasn’t until he came and sat beside her, allowing himself to just feel in that moment. With all that had been going on, neither one of them had the opportunity to stop for a moment. Even in their supercharged meeting, it was one that surprised the both of them after they had a few moments by themselves.

They had only known each other for a short while but it also felt like forever.

image

Yoongi stared out into space, the inky blackness of the void that actually went on forever. The spattering of stars that streaked by as they were in Subspace. It looked no different from actual space but one could see the beautiful colors of the ionized particles as it washed over the ship. It was soft and comforting, along with the gentle hum of the ship as it flew through it. He’d almost missed it all but the thing that he missed the most was the refreshing feeling of not having to worry about the layers between them and the vacuum of space. To be able to breathe the air without thinking about their life support systems. He supposed it was something he took for granted while being planetside, with an atmosphere that was in full effect and not subject to fail should anything drastic happen.

Of course, that could be said of things planetside but that was there. Safe and able to breathe comfortably but there? It was all canned and wrapped in metal waiting to be destroyed.

“Cold be heart and hand and bone. Cold be travelers far from home.”

“Well damn, if you’re cold then get a blanket. I won’t tell.”

Yoongi was surprised when he was answered by the one person that he didn’t want near him right then. Vairuit's voice was light in amusement but still held the gritty undertones that befitted her nature. He could see his reflection in the glass, his eyes narrowing in response to her unwelcome appearance. He said nothing as he just simply tried to ignore her but he already knew that she wouldn’t just go away that easily. Finally, he just turned to her and said nothing--hoping that she would just take the hint.

“Still got your everything in a twist? Jeez, do all of your kind get like this? You’re kinda worse than someone’s clingy ex.”

Yoongi was definitely better than someone’s clingy ex and the remark made him puff up a little. Why was it that every time she spoke to him, it was like nails dragging along his skin? She was suddenly standing beside him, looking out of the window as well with a sigh. He stared at her for a good, long minute as he decided on what he should do. If she was insisting on riling him up, then he would have none of it as he vehemently wished to stay in his own world. One where upon realizing that he was in full control over and not subject to the whims of the universe. He’d been doing that for so long that he had forgotten what it was like to have others around him, other than Jimin.

He should probably apologize to him but once his feelings were done being stepped on, then he would do so.

“You know, you got some amount of willpower to keep up that facade of yours. You clearly want to have that connection with someone like Jimin and Nyala but you’re just a damn child when it comes to that. That family complex again, isn’t it?”

“Look , you have no idea what my past is like. Yeah, I guess I do have a family complex because when you come from a royal family like mine and you practically did everything for them--to please them? Only for shit to go down and you’re tossed away like nothing ever mattered at all? The fact that they never cared at all and even made attempts to kill you when you didn’t fit their needs? How fucked is that, to live decades like that? Our race is known for our psionic abilities but with those abilities, you can really fuck with someone’s head.”

He turned back to the window, his anger simmering but not yet exploding. Maybe it was because he was letting go of some of the crap that had been in his bloodstream for years. Just by speaking it out loud, letting it float away into the void. He wasn’t giving up his guarded stance but without him realizing it, the cracks in his wall were beginning to show to her. And she saw them as clear as day. The want and need to be accepted or loved by someone but afraid to be used like that again.

“You come from a warrior family. Granted, they probably didn’t care for the path you chose but you chose it from your own will. I chose mine out of survival, out of the fact that if I didn’t--I would have died and I’m not about to die now. There’s something out there that’s been calling out to me and I intend to find out what it is.” Yoongi didn’t even look at her but the window forced him to do so in another way. Her reflection showed that she was sporting a grin on her face, triumphant about something.

“Well, there’s something I’d never thought I’d see. Yoongi, you big old softie under those spikes. You’re like a crab and I think I like it.”

image

Her fingers traced along the scars, almost white from the years spent healing over. One could have gotten that fixed with the technology those days but for some reason, Jimin chose to keep them. It was almost like someone had tore him apart and placed him back together again but with different parts. His hand reached up and took hers, the big eyes of his shining like he already knew what she was thinking.

“Yes, I wasn’t always like this.”

“Hey mamá! I heard this really cool sound today!”

He held up an old device, one that some spacers called a radio and shook it for her to see. The woman, whose hair fell beyond her waist, reached down and took the device from the child. She held it up to her ear and the static garbled loudly but one could hear the most intricate tone from inside of it. It was almost like music and her little one was able to identify it, a genius in the making.

She smiled at him and ruffled his hair, the clasps of the traditional Mogwai on his ears. She always said that his nose bridge ridges were the cutest of all the land. He grinned up at her, giggling at the affection as he shied away from it. The little boy blushed at his mother praised him for such a feat. He was still so young yet so very bright and colorful for the world, always sensing the needs of others. Yet, it was his nightmares that scared her the most. The way that he would scream and plead for them not to take anyone. She watched him take the old radio and scamper off into the distance, the golden fields on which they lived by. He truly was one of a kind, his ability to secrete the toxin used by his race--it came about so early in him as well as the visions. Some ancients said that because of their unique ability, it connected them to something higher and even times that they could sense.

Their race was one of technology and science but even that peaceful life could change. Her son had already foreseen it.

Jimin turned Nyala around, his hands finding the spots on her back and kneaded ever so slightly. He hummed while he massaged her back, the sound reverberating through his chest. His ability came out through the pads of his fingers, his will allowing it to do so as he put pressure onto the knots that had formed. She sighed, the muscles relaxing under his strength. The type of strength that had been acquired through all the Frankenstein ideology of the people that he had been serving under. He remembered how he lost his temper and nearly broke the table, the feeling of shame washed over him again.

It was everything over the past few days that was finally catching up with him.

“Nyala, I am sorry for the other day. I should have controlled myself better.”

“Do not do that to yourself. I could have said no and we all know it.” She turned around, making him stop what he was doing to look at him. Her own hand reached out to touch his face, to have the cheek fit perfectly into her hand. She didn’t care what had happened to him, just as long as he was fine now. They all had their stories, their woes and their own scars--it would only be a matter of time before they were all comfortable talking about them all.

The Pirates came.

And with them, the raiders attacked. The selfish beings that allowed the raiders to take control and capitalize on their golden lands. They had refused to do business with the Pirates and because of that, things changed. Their peaceful lands were invaded and destroyed on both fronts. They had been so far away from Federation space that they had made due with what they were given. As much as they had helped other species, not a single one came to help them.

Jimin was snatched up, screaming and biting the one that had him. His mother reached out for him, to hold him one last time but a shot sounded and blood poured out of her chest. The little boy’s eyes were round as saucers, watching that unfold before him. He screamed, fighting even more ferociously in return. When he woke up, the fires were gone and he was on a cold ship--dark and silent as he was surrounded by metal. There were others there of his kind but no one talked, they had just given up. They told him that it would be best if he would do the same, a little boy that was now lost in space.

Chapter 14- The Last of the Real Ones

image

"I was just an only child of the universe And then I found you, And then I found you"

image

He had to pause to make sure he heard her right. Did the Mao just call him a crab ? She was grinning at him as he tried to figure out what it was about that statement that was so funny. After throwing her a judging look, Yoongi couldn’t help but let out the slight breath that could have been mistaken for a laugh. It was more of a scoff but who was taking that into account?

“And you’re just a busybody with too much strength. Why the hell are you out here in the first place? You never answered that question.”

Vairuit leaned against the side, the grin slipping from her face as she really thought about it. She’d been groomed to be a warrior, to take her place with the rest of her family and make something of herself. However, there was something deep inside that was calling to her--just like it had been for Yoongi. Her family was outraged, such talent and brilliance wasted for adventure. Wasted on exploring the vastness of space instead of defending it, she’d heard the spiel many times yet she still wrote back to them to tell them where she was. Because, deep down, she knew that they still cared despite their words and actions.

It was something they’d accepted as they were being groomed and she did not.

“We may not be so opposite after all.. Yoongi. ” Her eyes began to light up as she told him of her grand family. How they wanted her to be an honorable soldier to fight for something bigger than herself. To fight for family and the empire but she just couldn’t accept that. There had to be something else out there that was bigger than that, something out in the darkness that provided a path for her to walk on. Yoongi listened, not a smart remark was given as she spoke. He could feel himself relax, her words oddly soothing to his nerves instead of grating under his skin. That was all that was needed, a line of communication.

Yoongi already knew that he was in the wrong, partly because of his selfishness. But it was all that he’d ever known since making his way across the stars.

There was a silence after she stopped talking. One that seemed to stretch out comfortably once it was all out. The energy that she still gave off didn’t bother him as much. He turned from Vairuit and back to the window, another sigh escaping his lips. His own reflection stared back at him, a cold and hard image until he focused on it. The image changed to one that was worn and thoughtful, Yoongi had a lot to think about. Vairuit started to walk away when his hand snapped out, grabbing her wrist to prevent her from leaving. In that moment, he was lost and still emotional. She paused, looking down at his hand that had grabbed her wrist and lifted an eyebrow at him. Before she could say anything, he let go and walked out of the bridge. Yoongi just couldn’t bring himself to say anything else for fear that he would completely expose everything to her.

Nothing fucking makes sense anymore. He thought as he stomped towards his room. He ended up passing Jimin’s room and he paused, wondering if he should bother him. Opening his mind again, he realized that the younger man shouldn’t be bothered. He could tell that Nyala was in there and judging by their emotions--they were figuring things out themselves. His hand rested on the door, almost in apology that he just couldn’t say with his voice. After touching the cool metal, Yoongi nearly ran to his room to escape everything again. He had to meditate and think everything through, to put everything back where it needed to be.

“So you’re going to wake the thing up and ask it where it hurts?”

Namjoon sighed and looked over the crate again. He’d finally gotten into the thing so he could activate when Jin joined him. The soft, female voice-activated and started a countdown while he set up a makeshift station for him to work on things. The pilot stated asking him questions while he typed in the coding he would need. He either responded with a grunt or a hum until Jin asked him that particular question. He really could do that by himself, the extra mouth not helping his mood any.

“Yes, Jin. I’m going to wake the big bad thing up and I’m going to have it eat you as soon as it's awake because you are in my space.”

“Are all of you gear-heads so grumpy?”

210 seconds until cryogenic deadlocks are lifted.

Namjoon just stared at Jin for a moment before getting back to his work. He pulled up a holographic screen with the schematics of the android while handing the device that was in his hands to Jin. Using his hands, he twisted and maneuvered his way through each part. He could see in closer detail where the affected areas were highlighted in red but there was something odd about the whole thing that he just couldn’t put his finger on. Even Jin got close to peer at what he was looking at, his normally jovial face turning serious as he looked on. Namjoon started to frown more as he got to the chest area, the whole thing being greyed out as to the rest of the body that was either orange with potential activity or red with damage. The grey extended throughout the body, especially the head--almost like a nervous system.

He had to wonder what it was he was missing or that the equipment that he had now was supposed to go in those areas. Most of it that he knew of was just simple parts he had to replace but nothing that extensive.

110 seconds until cryogenic deadlocks are lifted.

He really wouldn’t see until he could start up the activation sequence. Jin pushed a bit closer to Namjoon, looking even harder at the schematic. It had started to bother him too, his eyes that were able to see things that others couldn't. He had a theory but one that could potentially be hazardous to them all.

“I wonder, Namjoon…” Jin walked up to the crate, which has started to hiss and let out steam as it was working on the security features. “What if this is something more?”

Namjoon paused and looked at the crate himself. He tilted his head as he attempted to understand what Jin meant. So he gave the man a questioning look and a hand gesture, so he could continue what it was he was thinking. Jin turned around and called out for Kibeth, the male voice calmly announcing that it was there.

“Pull up a schematic of a human body. We’ll say mine for reference and compare it to the full body schematic of this android.”  The AI did so, now two full-body views of whole beings. Jin looked at Namjoon before continuing, “What the common factor between the both of them?”

They both appear to have nervous systems running through each one, as a start.

Kibeth highlighted the intricate webbing that was seen greyed out on the Android’s schematic and the same for Jin’s. That alone made both of them worried about what they were doing, not even listening to what the AI was saying next. Before they could continue any further, the lid of the crate suddenly popped open with the female voice announcing that the countdown was complete.

They both peered at what was inside, trying to get some of the coolant and gas to clear so they could see better. After the gas had cleared, the both of them suddenly jumped back in shock--the sight of what they saw had them almost tripping over everything, including each other.

“IT’S A NAKED GIRL IN THERE!”

“THAT’S NOT AN ANDROID!”

Inside the crate, curled up neatly into the small space was a woman with long blond hair. Four metal cylinders rose from the corners of the crate and started to blink. Both Namjoon and Jin exclaimed at the same time, now realizing what it was that they were dealing with. They had only heard of such things being used in certain cases but the actual effect of having one was pretty much banned by most societies. They had to turn their eyes away from the smooth skin of the Bio-Android, a bit embarrassed that they had viewed such a thing in its most vulnerable form.

Cryogenic deadlocks released. Proceed to cryogenic reanimation?

Cryogenic deadlocks released. Proceed to cryogenic reanimation?

The crate kept asking them the same question, it needing a yes or no answer for it to continue. Jin shoved the device into Namjoon’ hands, who them shoved it back to Jin. The little game of who should do what continued for a few minutes until they got a hold of themselves. If they did not make an answer soon, then the thing would probably wake up regardless. However, it would cause the android to wake up with all the full-body functions as a human as well. And if it was damaged, they would need more than just an engineer to fix the thing.

“Look, I know I said I can fix anything but I’m also not a doctor either. We could wake this thing up but with its bio components, I won’t be able to do much. We need a doctor to help us.” Namjoon summarized for Jin, who gave him a wide-eyed look.

“Do I look like I know a reputable doctor? One that’ll help us ? If this thing is needed to get this ship up and fully running, we might be out of luck.”

Namjoon sighed and placed the device down that had ended up back in his hands again. When they were asked again to confirm, he calmly said no and the cylinders lowered themselves again. They had hit a snag that they really weren’t expecting and with them hurtling towards their first stop, their journey might have been over before it even begun.

It was quite an active night. Most of the Clan were out handling business. Their world of darkness, one that you had signed your life over for protection--it was more dangerous than you thought and in order to keep the Masquerade, they all had to play along with the song and dance to keep the balance as well as peace. The two elders of the clan and one of the younger ones were out to do such things and left the care of the mansion to the others.

A word of caution, however.

There was one that you had to look out for. He was considered the middle child of them all, one stuck between the elders and the younger vampires. The one that they had to chain up most nights to keep him from hurting himself and others around him. Sometimes you heard his cries when they did that; the wail that would keen throughout the mansion.

There was no such sorrow that night.

You could hear him laughing along with the youngest as they enjoyed their freedom without the elders. The complaints of the second youngest could also be heard because he was trying to play his games but the others kept bothering him. You were only supposed to check in on them and drop off some paperwork but since you entered, they picked up on your scent like dogs sniffing out food.

Jaehwan was by your side in a flash, a blink and his hands rested on your shoulders--keeping you from running away. His grin caught you off guard, showing the youthful and joyful face that always disarmed everyone else. He smiled sweetly at you, eyes crinkling. Almost instantly, you distrusted what he was planning. There was something cold in your hands, prompting you to look down at them. He put whipped cream into your hands, sticky and fresh.

“I order you to throw this into Hongbin’s face.”

“W-what? Excuse you?! I’m busy right now!!”

“You work for me. You are my slave,” he whispered in your ear, making goosebumps appear on the nape of your neck.

You were about to remind him who the actual boss was but there was a blur. A large blur that pushed up your hands, squishing the same whipped cream into Jaehwan’s face. The older vampire blinked, the white substance smeared all over his perfect and angelic face. You could see the struggle on his visage as he decided who was to blame for that - his little trick ruined.

“HAN SANGHYUK, GET BACK HERE!” he finally roared, racing after him.

He left you there with the dripping leftovers still in your hand and a dumbfounded expression still on your face. Suddenly, a towel fell down and landed on your head. The thing startled you and made you jump, the towel covering your eyes. You stood there for a moment before grabbing it and wiping your hands, scowling in the process. This was not what you signed up for. Not in the least.

“I want to make your flaps moister than an oyster..”

“I’m sorry--what?”

The statement had you putting your book down, trying to figure out if you’d heard your boyfriend right. He’d had some days off, deciding to spend some time with you but when you had things to do in your normal life--he’d been a bit put out. However, that didn’t stop him from making advances on you every chance that he got. His face broke out into a grin, one of those grins that had you realizing he said what he’d said and wasn’t taking it back at all.

Normally, his jokes had you keeling over with laughter along with him but there was just something odd about that statement and left you wondering where in the hell he got it from. You furrowed your eyebrows, trying not to grin at the goofy look on his face because you knew that once you cracked--there was no going back.

“What kind of pick up line is that, Kim Seokjin?”

He snuggled up against you, still looking up at you with that grin on his face. Winking at you, Jin kept nudging you until you placed your book on the table with a laugh. He snickered along with you until laughter rang out from the both of you. His laugh was infectious and damn near impossible to resist--well for you, at least.

“I heard it from Namjoon and figured he was too chicken to say it to someone so I decided to use it on you. Did it work?” He bumped you with his body some more, another attempt to get you to answer him, “Huh?”

You shoved at him playfully but he laid on top of you, still giggling. He started to kiss every inch of exposed body that he could, still with the odd pickup lines in between. Finally, after laughing for damn near an hour, your book was forgotten but you were able to sleep alongside him and RJ for the rest of the night.

“…Yoongi Hyung? I need you to find Jungkook…whatever it takes.”

“I will, Hoseok-ah,” Yoongi replied gently, his grip on the phone increasing for a split second before ending the call.

Slipping the phone into his pocket, he lifted his head to gaze at the tall building – his eyes focusing on the rooftop. The wind whipped across his body, his hair flying in every direction as the tails of his trench coat flapped behind him. Yoongi felt a lump forming in his throat as he tried to swallow it down, wondering if he should even be standing there. If he had any right to be standing there.

It had been a week since his altercation with Eden that night, when all his skeletons came tumbling out of the closet. Yoongi could still feel the sting of her slap on his cheek and remembered the tears that slid down her face. He’d never seen Eden cry in all the years he’d known her. She’d shed a tear or two over a drama or a movie they decided to watch together, but those were tears she shed without shame. Tears of outrage; of pain? He didn’t think she was even capable of it.

He’d believed her to be so strong. Yoongi thought she could take on anything; that she could stare the Reaper in his face and tell him to take a long walk off a short pier.

I made a mistake, he thought, furrowing his brows as he made his way toward the steps leading up the side of the building, I should have just been honest from the start.

Yoongi’s pace was slow, methodical; he was in no hurry. He knew it was Eden’s day off and she would be home. She was usually catching up on dramas she’d missed during the week or playing video games. She wasn’t a very social creature by nature. Not unless she was forced. Yoongi grimaced when he thought about how their dates usually went. He probably hadn’t helped things with how he kept her away from prying eyes all the time.

Had he made her even more of a recluse?

When he reached the rooftop, he looked around and saw the long wooden table and a few chairs near the edge of the roof. She usually liked to read by sunlight during the summer and Yoongi couldn’t help smirking when he thought of the times they would eat watermelon while sitting on the table, staring at the stars during those hot summer nights. She hated doing laundry and he often teased her about it, saying that it was supposed to be therapeutic while she complained about it being a colossal waste of time; bitching about not having her own washing machine.

He remembered kicking cold water on her when they were stomping around in the water basin, cleaning one of her summer blankets on an early Saturday morning. She hosed him down and they were both utterly soaked, stripping down naked while he grabbed a few large towels from the line to wrap them both in. His face twisted into a painful expression when he remembered drying her off, admiring every single inch of her body until he couldn’t resist himself; claiming her in her bed and wearing her out completely.

Yoongi paused in front of the laundry line, seeing the clothes that were hanging out to dry. They would freeze in this cold. She must have gotten busy with something since the laundry basket was still outside, left abandoned under the line. Sighing, he began to pull clothes, sheets, and towels off the line. He folded them and placed them into the basket, lost in his own thoughts.

How could he have ruined it all?

Friends? What the hell was I even thinking? Yoongi chastised himself, folding the last of the towels and dropping it into the basket. It’s all just one giant fucking excuse…

Yoongi lifted the basket into his arms with minimal effort before strolling forward to the front door. He resisted the urge to use the spare key to simply let himself in. For a moment, he just stood in front of the door and remained silent. He did nothing. He probably looked like a fool standing there and holding a basket full of clean laundry, but at that moment, Yoongi didn’t care.

He wasn’t ready for another altercation with Eden. He thought he was, but in reality, he knew he wasn’t. Yoongi didn’t think he could handle her enraged expression directed toward him. Sure, they fought and cussed and fussed at each other when they were together, but it wasn’t anything like what he saw that night. He knew she wasn’t a pushover and he’d even seen her tussle with some thugs when they were both still living in America. She had no problem stabbing someone. She had no problem spilling blood when it came to defending herself.

But she’d never turned her knife on him before. Yoongi wasn’t sure if he was more shocked or riled up at the idea that she came at him with everything that she had. He had scars of his own, sure, but the ones that littered her body showed the hard road she had been forced to travel for most of her life. Yoongi admired her strength and determination to continue living even as the world turned its back on her.

Even as he turned his back on her.

“Oh, goddammit,” he heard from the other side of the door, causing his thoughts to come crashing back to the present, “I forgot to get the laundry.”

Yoongi’s grip tightened on the basket and he considered just leaving it there. He could just leave it there, away from the door so she wouldn’t accidentally trip over it, and go. Running into her now would just cause a fight. He knew her well enough to bet money on it.

“I can get it later,” came another voice from inside.

Yoongi’s heart stopped for a moment and he nearly dropped the laundry basket. He felt his face grow hot and the heavy thrum of his heart roared in his ears. His eyes narrowed harshly at the frosted glass of the door.

It was Jungkook’s voice.

He heard Eden scoff from inside the apartment, her silhouette appearing before the door as he saw her moving around to grab a pair of shoes.

“What? So you can get fever sick again or break your neck because you can barely walk, then blame me for it? Fuck that. I got it.”

He knew he should leave. Yoongi still had time to leave and pretend he didn’t hear anything. Pretend he didn’t know that Jungkook was there.

Two things stopped him, keeping him rooted in his spot. Hoseok’s request, his pleading to find Jungkook, and Yoongi’s own jealous anger.

Yes, he was jealous.

Yes, it was unfair.

Yes, it was unreasonable.

He didn’t care.

So when Eden pulled the door open, almost barreling into him, he could only cut his eyes at her as she gasped just seconds before impact. She stumbled back, catching her balance as she clung to the doorknob, and let out a yell that sounded like a mixture of fright and outrage. Eden clutched at her chest, catching her breath as she glared up at him.

“You scared the fuck outta me!” she yelled, scratching at the side of her wild curls that flared out like a lion’s mane. “What are you doing standing there like some kinda fuckin’ ghost!? You trynna kill me?!”

Yoongi didn’t say anything. He continued to hold the laundry basket, gripping onto it like it was a tether preventing him from falling into a black hole. The vein near his temple throbbed as he bit the inside of his jaw.

“Noona?” called Jungkook from inside and Yoongi’s gaze lifted from hers to look over her shoulder. He was still out of sight which meant that he was in the main area of the apartment. “Everything okay?”

He looked back at Eden and saw realization wipe over her face. She pushed on the basket that Yoongi was holding, shoving him back a couple of steps. He was crowding the doorway and she wanted to get out and there was a petty part of him that wanted to keep her trapped in the entryway.

“Everything’s fine, Jungkook-ah,” she said through clenched teeth, glaring at Yoongi; daring him to say otherwise, “it’s just a stupid cat.”

Yoongi’s brows raised as he looked down at her, watching the smirk forming on her face. Cat?

“I didn’t know you had a cat,” Jungkook said, a distinct explosion coming from the television.

“He’s not mine. He just likes to show up whenever he wants to cause me grief.” Yoongi narrowed his eyes at her and she continued to smile, though her irritation was still evident. “Isn’t that right, Lil Meow Meow?”

“Lil Me—” He started to protest but Eden slapped her hand over his mouth and all but shoved him out of the way.

“I’ll be back. Stay there and keep that ice pack on your legs.” Then she closed the door behind her before rounding on Yoongi. “What in the hell are you doing here?” Her voice was a harsh whisper and she pointed toward the large table that was far away from the door.

He set the basket down by the door and turned, making his way toward the table and plopped down on it. There was no point trying to raise a stink in front of her door. Eden’s temper was merciless and while it lasted only a little while, it left destruction around her like a tornado. He wouldn’t risk her getting into trouble with her neighbors this late at night.

He was choosing to not be selfish this time.

Eden stood in front of him, arms folded across her chest. “Well? Why are you here? I thought I made it clear that I didn’t want to see you.”

Yoongi flashed a dark smirk as he looked up at her through his fringe. “Did you? I must have missed that part.”

“Min Yoongi,” Eden half snarled, “don’t make me hurt you.”

He laughed despite how serious he knew she was being.

“You’ve already hurt me.”

“Excuse me?”

Yoongi shook his head, pressing a hand to his forehead. “…nothing. I’m taking Jungkook home.”

She scoffed, raising a brow at him. “Says who?”

“I do,” he growled out, “that’s who.”

He saw Eden look away from him. “Forget it.” Her tone was solid. “He overextended his muscles and he’s still having trouble walking.”

“Then I’ll carry him.”

This time she laughed, turning her head to look back at him. “Who says that he even wants to go home?”

“Eden, don’t—”

“Don’t what? Butt in?” He saw her narrow her eyes at him. “Too late.”

Yoongi shot up from the table, taking a step toward her but she reflexively took a step back. He wasn’t sure if that action hurt him more or if her words were what was getting to him.

“Why do you care anyway?” he snapped.

She smirked. “What’s it to you?”

He took a breath, attempting to collect himself, before looking back at her. “Look,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady, “if this is about me, about getting back at me, then there’s no need for that.”

For a long moment, all Eden could do was look at him – eyes wide and unblinking. Then, a handful of seconds later, she burst into a very loud laughing fit. This caught him off guard and now he was the one taking a step back. It was clear that what he’d said wasn’t funny. Not one bit. He knew what kind of laugh this was.

It was an angry laugh.

After a short minute, Eden managed to collect herself. “Are you fuckin’ shitting me right now?” She straightened to her full height, taking a step toward him and jamming her finger into his chest. “Ya, Min Yoongi-ssi, who the hell do you think you are, huh?”

The honorific threw him. She’d never used it with him for as long as he’d known her. Not in the States and definitely not here. For her to add that polite title to his name made him feel like he’d been kicked in the gut by a mule.

“Do you think I’m holding Jungkook hostage? You think I’m doing this to get back at you for hurting me? Just who in the fuck do you take me for?”

Yoongi swallowed, the lump in his throat swelling as his mouth grew dry. He’d fucked up. Royally. Eden wasn’t the petty sort of person he knew himself to be capable of. She was a straight shooter when it came to showing people whether she liked or disliked a person. She wasn’t the kind of person to play mind games or get revenge on people. He remembered her once telling him that type of thinking was a waste of time for everyone involved.

She poked him again; harder this time and he winced.

“Maybe if you guys kept your fuckin’ house in order, then I wouldn’t have people showin’ up on my fuckin’ doorstep sick and half dead from runnin’ themselves into the fuckin’ ground.”

And again, Eden dug her finger into his chest.

“You all are gettin’ on my goddamn nerves, you know that? But I’m not gonna toss him out on his ass when he doesn’t want to leave. Not in his current condition.”

This time, she grabbed a fistful of his shirt and shook him – looking more terrifying than the night she tried to stab him.

“Got it?”

Suddenly, the door to her apartment swung open. Both Yoongi and Eden turned to see Jungkook bracing himself on the frame. He had a pained look on his face, as if it was a struggle for him to maintain his balance. Jungkook tried to wipe the pain away with a smile, but it looked more like a half grimace and he steadied himself while stepping out of the apartment. Yoongi watched his legs wobble, like he was a baby deer taking its first steps in life.

“Ya, Jeon Jungkook,” Eden called to him, releasing the hold she had on Yoongi’s shirt, “what do you think you’re doing?”

“It’s okay,” he said, sweat clinging to his brow as he took another step forward, “I’ll go back with Hyung.”

When he took another step, Jungkook lost his footing and started to fall forward. Eden left Yoongi’s side, rushing at Jungkook to catch him. All Yoongi could do was stare as she held him aloft, trying to keep as much of his weight up with her smaller frame. He felt his hands clutching into fists at his sides, the look of genuine concern spreading over Eden’s face.

What happened in that short amount of time? What was different between them now?

“Yoongi Hyung.”

Jungkook’s voice cut through Yoongi’s thoughts and he felt his hands loosen as he looked at him.

“You don’t have to carry me, but I’ll need your help getting down the stairs.”

Yoongi nodded, stepping toward them. He saw Eden’s hands tighten around Jungkook’s arm and he stopped.

“Jungkook-ah,” she said softly, her eyes not leaving Jungkook’s as he, in turn, looked back at her, “are you sure you’ll be alright?”

He smiled at her. “Yeah, I’ll be fine. Besides…” Jungkook looked back at Yoongi. “…there’s something I need to talk to Hyung about.”

Eden sighed, lifting herself up so that Jungkook could stand on his own. “Fine. Don’t do anything stupid.”

“I won’t.”

“Do you have everything?”

“Yeah, I grabbed my keys too.”

She folded her arms across her chest. “Text me so I know you made it back safely.”

“I will,” Jungkook said with a laugh, “I promise.”

Yoongi could only silently watch the exchange and he wasn’t sure what he was seeing. Was it two friends? Something more? Eden was known to show care and compassion for even her friends, so it wasn’t far-fetched for her to act this way with Jungkook if they were, in fact, friends.

…but is it more than that?

“Hyung?” He met Jungkook’s gaze, the smile gone from his face. “I’m ready.”

Yoongi crossed the small space between them, draping Jungkook’s arm over his shoulder and held him steady against him at the waist. They took slow steps towards the stairs and he fully expected Eden to retreat inside of her apartment. But as Yoongi helped Jungkook take the first step down, he chanced a glance at her and saw she was watching them intently.

“…Yoongi-ah,” she said, forcing Yoongi to come to a halt, “let me know when you get back, too.”

He didn’t say anything. He just nodded and then continued to help Jungkook ease down the steps. He wasn’t sure if it was his heart or Jungkook’s heart drumming against him, but nothing was said between them. Even when they hit the final step and Yoongi called a cab to pick them up, he continued to hold Jungkook up with his own body.

It wasn’t until the cab arrived and Yoongi made sure Jungkook was safely inside did his muscles finally relax. He told the driver their destination and the two men sat beside each other – each gazing out of their respective passenger windows. Neither of them said a word.

When it looked like they were stuck in a miniature traffic jam did Jungkook finally speak up.

“It really was Noona you were with for all those years, wasn’t it, Hyung?”

Yoongi craned his neck to look at Jungkook who was still staring out the window. He didn’t know if he could give an answer, or if he even should. What reason would he need to since it was clear that Jungkook already seemed to know the answer.

He sighed, instead looking back out the window.

“Why’d you do that? Why would you…how could you just lie to her?”

Yoongi closed his eyes.

“Of all the things, why lie to her about who you really are?”

He wasn’t sure if now was the time to get into this conversation. Or if he even wanted to.

“Hyung!”

Yoongi rounded on Jungkook who was now looking at him – no, glaring at him.

“What do you want from me, Jungkook-ah? Huh? What?!”

“I want to know why you would tell me to be honest with the person I care about when you couldn’t even do the same! Why would you do that?”

“Because I didn’t want her to get mixed up in our business, Jungkook-ah,” he snapped, “she’s been through enough and piling our shit on top of it all, especially back then, would have been too much!”

Jungkook gave him a dark look. “You don’t know that!”

“You’re right! I don’t. I didn’t know but I did what I thought was the best thing for everyone involved. Did I fuck up? Yes.” He reached out and snatched Jungkook by the collar of his shirt. “But let’s get one thing straight: I don’t take it back, you hear me?”

“Hyung!”

“If I could go back to that time, I’d make the same choice all over again. Easy. I’d keep her as far away from this shit as I could.” Yoongi’s expression hardened as Jungkook’s eyes narrowed even further. “My only regret is that I got caught in the first place.”

He saw something flicker in Jungkook’s eyes. It wasn’t anger – no, that was still sitting at the surface of his younger brother’s gaze. Was it…pity?

He felt Jungkook’s hands touch Yoongi’s, gently pulling them down – forcing him to release his hold on his shirt. Then he turned away from him to look back out the window.

“…you’re a moron, Hyung.”

Yoongi smirked, watching the multi-colored lights flash over Jungkook’s face. He craned his neck to look out his own window.

“I guess I am.”

And he was.

Min Yoongi was the worst kind of pretender.

Let Me In | JJK

“Hey,” he said, flashing his trademark grin at you, “I need a place to stay.”

The sigh that escaped your lips was on reflex. It was the same shit and on a different day. Part of you wondered why you entertained this fiasco at least twice a week, but the other part already knew why. In fact, you’ve always known the answer. It wasn’t like it was rocket science at this point.

It was because Jungkook was your best friend. When have you ever been able to say “no” to him? Nothing’s changed in the last twelve years. It wouldn’t change for the next twelve years, either.

Yet there you stood, gripping onto the doorknob and debating if today would be the day when you finally did, in fact, say “no” to his stupid, charming smile.

But like always, you relented. Stepping to the side, you gave an over dramatic flourish with one arm. He danced across the threshold, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder like he didn’t have a single care in the world. There were times when his nonchalant way of carrying himself could get under your skin. He’d been like that since you first met him in grade school. In fact, you were even a little jealous.

It was sheer luck that his parents happened to be close friends with yours. You were his childhood playmate. It was the same well through your adult years.

You closed the door, shuffling into the kitchen to finish brewing the pot of tea you were preparing. He slung his jacket across the back of the couch, the duffel in its place on the side of it. He’d already kicked off his shoes and was now making his way toward one of the chairs at the kitchen table.

“I want some,” he called out, “make me a cup too.”

You rolled your eyes. “You don’t even like tea.”

He pouted, his brows furrowing as you focused on pouring the hot water over the leaves in the teapot. “That’s not true.”

You give him the look, the one he knew all-too-well. “Since when?”

“Since today.” He flashed a cheeky grin at you and you shrug, pulling out two mugs. Jungkook gave small claps of victory. “You’re the best, Y/N.”

Shaking your head, you focus your energy on making sure that enough hot water is in the teapot. Mentally making a note to let it steep for a few minutes, you turned toward the fridge to pull out the plate of fruit you’d peeled and sliced earlier that afternoon.

Because you worked from home, you had the luxury to do things at your own pace. You’ve always preferred it that way. You knew from a very young age that you could never work for some big company; squared away in a cubicle where people referred to you by an ID number. Your parents said you were foolish for breaking away from societal norms, but Jungkook praised you for wanting to strike out on your own and live your life on your own terms.

Jungkook was already spearing through one of the apples with the dessert fork he squirreled from the utensil cup on the counter. For a while, all you could do was look at him as he chewed. He definitely was a man now, but there was a boyish air that continued to linger over Jungkook in his adult body. He was popular with the women, charismatic enough to draw in the men, and as someone who pursued his dream of painting, he was the definition of “starving, attractive artist”.

It wasn’t fair that he was your best friend. Who asked him to come into your life and stay there? Everyone else left and walked their own paths. It almost seemed archaic and unrealistic to maintain a “childhood friend” sort of relationship. No one was genuine anymore, willing to hide the truth behind plastic smiles and false promises. You expected Jungkook to be the same. People changed. Why shouldn’t he?

Yet there he was…

“So what happened this time?” you asked suddenly, pulling him from his fruit-induced moment of bliss. “Did you tell Marisa that she looked fat in some outfit again?”

“Huh?” Jungkook stopped in mid-chew, a piece of the apple poking out between his lips. “Marisa? We broke up, like, a week ago?”

Why weren’t you surprised?

“Besides, I learned my lesson on that front. Not all people appreciate honesty the way that you do.” Jungkook grinned. “If I said you looked fat in something, you’d either flip me off or make me help you pick something out that flatters your figure.”

“Gee, thanks,” you said as you poured the tea into both mugs, your sarcasm quite evident.

“You don’t fall for my pitiful acts either. In fact, I don’t think I could ever pull a fast one on you.” He tilted his head slightly as he looked up at you. “Is it because you know me so well?”

You scoffed as you hold out the mug of steaming tea toward him. “I can see your bullshit from a mile away. I don’t know how girls keep falling for it every single time.”

He chuckled, cradling the mug between his palms. “Yeah, I don’t either.” Jungkook blew the steam away a few times and then took a sip. He sighed happily.

“You still haven’t told me why you need a place to stay.” You raised the mug up to your face, scrutinizing him. “Again.”

“Oh, that?” He shrugged. “I just got into a fight with my Old Man.”

You slowly raised a brow. That was odd, considering that you knew how well Jungkook got along with his father. In fact, you couldn’t remember a time where they ever fought. Jungkook told you everything. Literally. It would have been a little odd to omit something like that.

“What for?” you asked, sliding into the chair beside him at the table. He passed a dessert fork with a strawberry on top of it.

Shrugging, he laughed as he polished off the apple and stabbed a piece of banana. “Honestly, it was really the stupidest thing. He said I was wasting my life on my art. That my career was too unstable to maintain.” He air-quoted around the words, his brows furrowing in contrast with the smile on his face.

You bit into the strawberry, savoring the juices. It would definitely balance out the herbal flavor of the tea. “Then just marry a rich person.”

The comment was clearly a joke. You knew he wouldn’t take it seriously. But as you lifted your mug of tea up to your lips, you spotted the look on Jungkook’s face. The amusement was gone from his features and he suddenly looked his age - petulant as the gaze was.

“That’s not funny, Y/N,” he said, his tone even and flat.

As the tea slid down your throat, you winced slightly at how it scalded the inside of your mouth. You quickly set the mug down on the table, suddenly uncomfortable with how hard Jungkook was staring at you. Since when did he take anything you said seriously? It actually irritated you.

“I was only joking, geez,” you snapped, tucking some of your hair behind your ear, “what’s your problem?”

“How can you even suggest that?” Jungkook folded his arms across his chest. “I’m going to marry for love, not for convenience.”

“Then love someone who happens to be rich so you can marry them!”

“Then I’ll marry you!”

The anger that was steadily boiling inside of you suddenly deflated. For a handful of seconds, all you could do was stare hard at one another. Finally, you balked at the idea, dissolving into a small fit of laughter.

“Wait, what?” You continued laughing, feeling a slight pain digging into your side. “What?! That’s crazy.” You slowly slid your fingers around your mug, averting his gaze. “You’re crazy.”

Suddenly, you felt his hand around your wrist. Before you have a chance to ask him what he’s doing, he’s already pulled you into his orbit. You had an idea of what you wanted to say to clapback at him, but his lips were already sealing over yours in a heated kiss. Your hand curled into a fist, unsure of what you were feeling at that moment. All you could focus on was the sweetness from the fruit he’d just eaten and the lingering herbal flavor of the tea.

But there was no urge to pull away. Strange. Did you want this to happen? Had you wanted it for some time?

He silently urged your mouth to open wider, wanting to get a better taste of you. In the same vein, you also wanted to taste him. This was your first kiss with Jungkook, after all. Out of all the relationships he’d had in the past, you were starting to get a better idea of why the other girls continuously fell for his nonsense - hook, line and sinker. There was a dark part of you that suddenly despised those other women.

They’d gotten a chance to indulge in his mouth long before you had. It wasn’t fair because you’d known him for almost half of your lives. Shouldn’t this moment have always been yours?

As Jungkook pulled away from you, you suppressed a whine of protest. He must have sensed it because he flashed his devious grin at you; the one that said he already knew what you were thinking. He had a way of being able to read you like an open book. Then again, you had the same skill when it came to him.

That didn’t make his face any less unnecessarily handsome or his kiss any less addicting.

“Hey, Y/N,” Jungkook whispered. He leaned in to press his nose gently against yours, causing your eyes to cross. “…I need a place to stay.”

Regardless of how hard your heart was jack-hammering against your ribs, you laughed. You both did. And then he pulled you in even closer, pressing your chest against his, so that he could kiss you once more.
