Things I Have Learnt about the British House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)*
1) At full flight, they have really bad brakes;
2) Taken by surprise, they have a turning circle of about 6ft;
3) They do not understand basic English, to wit:
“The OTHER window. OTHER! WINDOW! Jesus you got IN how can you not get OUT?! That window doesn’t even open! OTHER! WINDOW! The OPEN one! The one you came IN by! You all sit on that windowsill several times a day every! single! day! how can you not know where it is?! You’re the fifth this week, bloody talk to each other! Christ even the pigeons have the sense not to fly into the actual room and those guys are idiots....”
* I believe. If it turns out these are in fact Tree Sparrows I’ll be sure to let the relevant authorities know.
