Mental Crop Rotation
Mental Crop Rotation
When farmers grow the same crop too many years in a row, it can leave their soil depleted of minerals and other nutrients that are vital to the health of their fields.
To avoid this, farmers will often alternate the crops that they grow because some plants will use up different minerals (such as nitrogen) while other plants replenish those minerals. This process is known as “crop rotation.”
So the next time you find that you need to step away from a project to work on something else for a while, don’t beat yourself up for “quitting” that project. Give yourself permission to practice “mental crop rotation” to maintain a healthy brain field.
Because I’ve found that when that unnecessary guilt and pressure are removed from the process, a good mental crop rotation can help you feel more energized and invigorated than ever once you’re ready to rotate back to that project.

Hey y’all. It’s me, your token stressed studyblr.
There are 26 days between now and the end of my first year of grad school. There is also a boatload of assignments due in these 26 days. These assignments make up over 50% of my grade in all three classes (no pressure, right?).
My distance run-loving self thought it would be funny to treat these last 26 days like a marathon- A schoolwork marathon. I will post my productivity and other adventures on here for your amusement. Plus, I hope it will be a motivator for you if you’re struggling to reach the finish line!
You can follow the tag #cosmicmarathon if you want to join in or watch me angrily post about psychometric validity and performance management systems for the next three and a half weeks.
Let the race to the end of the semester begin!!

Word Counter - Not only does it count the number of words you’ve written, it tells you which words are used most often and how many times they appear.
Tip Of My Tongue - Have you ever had a word on the tip of your tongue, but you just can’t figure out what it is? This site searches words by letters, length, definition, and more to alleviate that.
Readability Score - This calculates a multitude of text statistics, including character, syllable, word, and sentence count, characters and syllables per word, words per sentence, and average grade level.
Writer’s Block (Desktop Application) - This free application for your computer will block out everything on your computer until you meet a certain word count or spend a certain amount of time writing.
Cliche Finder - It does what the name says.
Write Rhymes - It’ll find rhymes for words as you write.
Verbix - This site conjugates verbs, because English is a weird language.
Graviax - This grammar checker is much more comprehensive than Microsoft Word, again, because English is a weird language.
Sorry for how short this is! I wanted to only include things I genuinely find useful.
What are your top 5 study tips?
Helloo!
These answers are slightly obscure (but they’re good!):
Have a bedside table and a lamp (with dimming settings). There’s casual ways to keep studying. This is one of them.
I get in bed about 30/40minutes before I want to sleep. I put my phone on silent (and it’s out of reach). Then I sit up in bed and read (the dim lamp helps me doze off and I can just reach over and turn it off when I’m done, instead of getting out of bed).
The bedside table gives me easy access to my current reads!
Buy a clipboard: print off the journal articles you need to read for tomorrow’s lecture and sit up in bed annotating them. Then turn the lamp off and sleep.
Keep your favourite snacks with you when studying:
To stop me from getting up and wondering around (aka scavenging for food) I keep treats near my desk (I like apples, sweets and water).
Make lists: not a list for the week, or the day but for the specific study session. Write down what you want to achieve in the next 2/3hours and do it!
Use sticky tabs in your books:
But always write on sticky tabs! Don’t just stick them in, always scribble something. Why did you put it there? You will forget if you don’t write it down.
I hope these are helpful.
Managed to work on my performance management project for 2.5 hours today; considering that I also had to go to work for 7 hours, I consider this a pretty productive day!
In other news, it was an absolutely beautiful day out! I'm glad I took the time to walk back to my dorm instead of take the shuttle.
