I feel like there’s a very clear difference in the way things are said by certain writers:
Average writers- “I want to see them suffer” = hate that bitch. Die. I wish you didn’t exist.
Whump- “I want to see them suffer” = I love them more than anything.
Me: “No, yeah, I’ve been staring at this too long. I like this fic chapter. I can post it.”
*hits post*
2 seconds later: “NO ONE LIKES IT WHY DID I THINK IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO POST—“

you know its a Nightwing story when he’s crumpled in on himself in panic and anguish <\3

I know some people don't like the concept of these four meeting prior to the events of LotR, but I DO and THIS IS WHY
One very important note on the immense value of the Internet Archive that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
It crawls major newspapers like the New York Times multiple times per day.

For anything other than one of those scrolling updates breaking news pages, you can access it from the Archive usually within an hour or two of it being published. No paywall. You want international news? You got it. Opinion? That too. Recipes? It's all here. Page not yet archived? There's a button for that and now you got it.
There are various paywall-evading extensions and tricks out there, but they don't always work. This does.
Go forth and read the newspaper.
ao3 writers are either *90% of works are short oneshots* or *physically incapable of writing a oneshot, everything must be expanded upon*
Me in real life when any of my patients have poorly controlled pain: This is the WORST why aren’t the meds WORKING YET i HATE THIS—
Me, writing Whump: hehe Suffer
casting a spell of finish your wip rb to pass it on
I could write, or, consider this, I could take a nap
if a character means enough to me i will truly never stop thinking about them. i just retire them into a little back room in my brain and periodically bring them out to stare at them under a little light
what is your ideal whumpee like?
Oof, I mean the answer to this question is gonna say some concerning things about my psyche no matter how I spin it—
But I think for me it’s all about the stoic whumpee; refusing to admit that there’s a problem until they absolutely have to, spinning their reactions to a whumper to reach a goal, insisting to a caretaker that they’re fine when they categorically aren’t—the disregard for their own needs hits me directly in the soul every time.
if i post a fic and get no kudos or comments in the first fifteen minutes i’m a failure and should never write again. but the moment i get 1 comment i’m the next stephen king
Night Vale had some of the BEST one off quotes that would just suckerpunch you in the chest leave you breathless
Like the one that stuck with me was this one:
"when a person dies and no one will miss them, the mourning is assigned to a random human. This is why sometimes you just feel sad."
It's been almost 11 years... It haunts me in a good way

As usual, I’m having far too much fun writing the notes for my fic.
Just got a comment on a fic that was just “Please finish!” and I am torn between “I would also like to finish, HOWEVER—“, and being pleased that they want more.
If you can’t think of anything to say about a fic, writers also like to know:
- what time it is
- how long you’ve been reading
- how many chapters you’ve covered in the last 24 hours
- what you were late for because you were reading
- the woeful few hours you have left to sleep
- the emotional outbreaks you’re experiencing
- the inappropriate place you’re having said outbreak
- the general public’s reaction to your outbreak
- how much phone battery you have left
My average writing experience:
"Alright I think I'm almost done actually-"
*Google doc grows second health bar and a choir starts singing in latin*
In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.
I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!
From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!
I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.
The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.
(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.
insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
delete -> self explanatory
on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic
The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.
Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.
dam…….. that website “you feel like shit” (it’s like a questionnaire / troubleshooting guide for when you feel like shit) really works………………….. im not even all the way thru it and i even half-assed a lot of the suggestions and i already feel loads better
The “oh I could definitely write this fanfic in under 5000 words and it really wouldn’t take me that long” voice in your head is actually the devil speaking
Me, reading my scraps of fics in my notes app: oh, that’s good, I really like that. Someone should finish that.

My brain will just create new WIPs against my will, it’ll just start going, I have no say in which one I work on, in fact, WIP actually stands for Writer in Peril, help
