Do things change as much as people say?

It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of no fortune must be in want of a husband, too, bitch.

Hey! 4th grade teacher, here. May I start by saying how good it makes me feel that we can have a discussion about teaching methods involving all kinds of thoughts and opinions? I appreciate talking through pros and cons of these different methods, since we (teachers) basically steal what works well and use that to help the full spectrum of our kiddos.

I have students who love all 3 ways to do multi-digit multiplication I’ve seen in this post. The goal is for the kids to find a method that works for them. I feel that the “new maths” box method is just a stepping stone for kids to understand the distributive method. The standard algorithm ends up being nice for kids who memorize processes easier, while the box and distributive methods lend themselves to mental math. The box method also helps kids understand multiplication through the lens of place value and gives a visual representation, so I appreciate that for my visual learners. All in all, use the method you like the most. ☺️

Also, that video pisses me the hell off, since the person using the standard algorithm isn’t explaining each step and why each step is important to understanding the whole problem, as the person using the box method is being forced to do. They aren’t comparing apples to apples, so fuck them.

i looked up New Math after reblogging a recent post that explained it and gosh… is this really what Math is nowadays… please tell me this is only one method and not the prescribed mandatory method students have to deal with cause the Old Math method is not only quicker but also, efficient. and when you reach higher levels of Math, the New Math Method will screw you over tenfold because of how long the process is omg
