Sirius's core need for family

In the Shrieking Shack scene, Sirius is ready to cut a bitch and is happy to show his murderous rage in it's full force.

However, in the tunnel afterwards we see something, that for me really speaks to the core of who Sirius is.

The instant he thinks he might be free, he directs the conversation towards telling Harry that he is his godfather.

“You know what this means?” Black said abruptly to Harry as they made their slow progress along the tunnel. “Turning Pettigrew in?”

“You’re free,” said Harry.

“Yes ... ,” said Black. “But I’m also — I don’t know if anyone ever told you — I’m your godfather.”

He almost seems shy and hesitant when asking Harry to live with him- which is such a stark contrast to the previous scenes.

“Of course, I thought you wouldn’t want to,” said Black quickly. “I understand, I just thought I’d — ”

And then when Harry agrees he smiles for the first time.

"Black’s gaunt face broke into the first true smile Harry had seen upon it. The difference it made was startling, as though a person ten years younger were shining through the starved mask; for a moment, he was recognizable as the man who had laughed at Harry’s parents’ wedding."

This shows that above all else Sirius desires family and love. He barely wastes a minute of his freedom, before offering Harry a home. And I think this is criminally (all pun intended) overlooked when characterising him.

This is another one of my favorite parts of Prisoner of Azkaban, especially the description of Sirius’ smile. Every time I cry my eyes out!😭

An underrated Sirius moment in Goblet of Fire where Sirius lets Harry talk and talk, and Harry lets out everything he's been holding in since he became an unwilling Triwizard Tournament champion.
