- You weren't mine to lose.
[pairing: miles morales x best friend!reader]
[warnings: sweet to angst, a bit of spoilers since the some scenes described came from the movie, regret, heartbreak]
[a/n: if you know august by taylor swift, yk the pain. it's based off that song bc i was thinking about some past situationships and how for some of them i was just a rebound so... anyway for the you're losing me fic, i'm not sure if i would make a part two, but i'll definitely think about it! anyways enjoy đ«¶đ»]
You and Miles had met when your family moved into the apartment above them. You were both nine and to be honest, you kind of saw him as weird. When you were hanging out (much to your dismay, you would rather read than be with some boy), he would mumble songs as he drew on the sketchpad he got for his birthday. You, on the other hand, were silently reading fantasy novels that you got for Christmas. Despite your differences, you made quite the pair even going into high school.
Summer had approached Brooklyn faster than you anticipated. It was hot and humid. The air conditioning in your room would not work for some unknown reason and you were stuck sweating it out in your room. You grabbed a folder and used it to fan your face. A knock on your door grabbed your attention before eventually opening. âMiles, you can come into my room, you know.â You told him with a slight edge to your voice. He let out a chuckle before replying, âThatâs just rude. My mom raised me better.â You rolled your eyes and stood to the side to let him in. You closed the door behind him as he sat on your desk chair and twirled around.
âSomething on your mind, Morales?â You ask him as you sit on your bed cross-legged. You could tell he was nervous. He was looking down on the floor and sort of sweating. âA-Ah, itâs nothing. I just, uhm.â Miles mumbled out. You raised an eyebrow at his behavior. He was rarely ever like this.
âJust what?â
âWell, I was hoping that Gwen would come back and we could go to an art museum.â Miles paused to look at you to which you just stared back at him.
âAnd what do you want me to do?â You would be sad if Miles asked you only because Gwen wasnât around. But, time with Miles is still better than anything. You have harbored a crush on him since you guys were ten. At first you were even in denial of your feelings for the boy but when you guys danced at your schoolâs halloween party, you knew it was over for you.
âCome with me instead? I mean do you want to stay in this heat?â Miles in a know-it-all tone. You rolled your eyes before chucking the folder you were using at his face. He laughed as he caught it with ease, setting it on your desk.
âIs it a yes or no?â
âWhat do you think, Morales?â
And that was the beginning of an eventful summer. You two were going out together more often than staying in. Everyday was a summer adventure for the both of you. Summer filled with laughter, longing stares, and nightly stargazing at the rooftop. It was the best summer you ever had, especially because you two might or might not have shared a kiss underneath the moonlight. You werenât sure what exactly the label you guys had. You guys were best friends, for sure, but best friends donât look at each other that way. They donât kiss and draw the other on their sketchbook. They donât take polaroids of each other to keep in their wallets to admire and treasure.
But all things came crashing down when you saw Miles with Gwen that autumn at his dadâs party. You were clutching the sketchbook he left at your desk the last time you guys hung out. Miles looked soâŠso in love with Gwen. Like she was the life of the party. You had an epiphany. All summer, you thought he looked at you lovingly. But, he wasnât. It was different from the one he was giving Gwen right now. You knew better than to look through his sketchbook because it was his safe space. He could draw and doodle all that he wanted to help with the stress of life and school. As you opened the first few pages, it was filled with random sort of graffiti art. Flipping through more pages, there were drawings of spiders, Spider-Man, and,
âGwen.â You breathed out. Tears were pooling at your eyes as more and more pages were filled with drawings of her that you were sure he drew over the summer. But there was only one drawing of you. The page also contained the polaroid he took of you as you were looking out into the city. You shut the notebook with one hand and wiped your tears with the other. His mom walked over to you while holding a plate of cake. She greeted other guests before she was in front of you. âHey, whatâs wrong?â She asked with concern. She rubbed your back as you tried to prevent more tears from rolling down your face.
âTĂa, can youâŠcan you give this to Miles?â You told her softly and handed her the sketchbook. She looked confused but accepted it nonetheless. âAnd tell him to never talk to me again.â
You left that party without looking back. You werenât even sure what to say to Miles or his parents. That he made you his rebound? That you were just a summer fling? You locked yourself in your room before your dad could question why you weren't at the party upstairs. You didnât even make it to bed before you broke down sobbing. You slid against the door and began to cry. Your heart ached as memories of the wonderful summer you had flashed in your mind. You stood up and grabbed your wallet from your desk to pull out the polaroid of Milesâ stuffed face that you thought was cute. You took that picture when he was eating too much cake from your dadâs birthday. You stuffed it inside a drawer because you knew you couldnât get yourself to get rid of it.
That night Miles kept trying to call you to which you promptly put your phone on âDo not disturb.â You spent hours with a tear stained face and a numb heart. You stared out into space wondering what you did to deserve this pain. But you remembered that, it was kind of your fault too. Who were you to assume you and Miles had something after a summer filled with dates and stolen kisses? You were just his best friend. You were just a rebound. A summer fling.
âYou werenât mine to lose.â You mumbled to yourself as you brought your knees to your chest to hug them. Meanwhile, Miles is stuck in another dimension wishing he could go back to fix the mess he made, to go back to you and the amazing summer you had.

- i guess sometimes we all get just what we wanted.
[warnings: mention of injury, angst [but it ends in fluff], kind of sad, mentions of having a family and marriage, not proofread]
[a/n: i'm really sorry if this was bad, i just got back to writing after like a good year or two đ miguel o' hara really got me inspired and so i wrote this while listening to midnight rain lawls]
I have always wanted to help the world. I always believed that Iâd save everyone because I couldnât save my sister. When the bridge collapsed and I failed to save her, that very night I vowed to protect my city and the people I loved. Being Spider-Woman isnât easy and I knew that. I knew the risks I had to take, the sacrifices I had to make. But he didnât want to risk me.
âÂĄDios mĂo! You couldâve died trying to stop that building from collapsing!â Miguel yelled as we entered his office. My back was turned on him, yet he kept pacing and mumbling how I was ârecklessâ and an âidiotâ. I was holding my other hand (the one I had accidentally sprained) thinking of a reply to his words.
âBut I didnât! I stopped the building, I lived, and I saved a bunch of peopleâs lives!â I replied, turning to face him. He groaned and ran his hand through his hair. Miguel made his way toward me and I stood still. He grabbed my injured wrist.
âAnd you managed to sprain your wrist, cariño! Did you forget that when you were recklessly swinging and trying to thwip your left hand when you couldnât?!â Miguel yelled again. He began to ramble on and on. I was tired. For months, he started to grow more and more agitated, hovering over me like Iâm some child. I knew the risks and the accidents that were going to happen. This wasnât the first time I was injured. Why was he acting like this now?
âLook, Miguel, I appreciate you looking out for me, but I know the risks. I am willing to take every single one of them.â I say tirelessly. He stopped rambling and looked me in the eye. âIf youâre going to be reckless everytime we go on a mission together, you should just retire,â He softly suggested. Miguel sighed as he cupped my cheek but my eyes grew wide at his suggestion. âI donât need to lose someone important in my life again. And you, ÂĄmi vida!, are the reason I continue to live, the reason I have hope in life,â Miguel continued. âMi amor, I want us to have a family. Wouldnât it be nice to leave this life behind?â
It wouldnât. I donât want a family. I donât want to retire and settle down, not when Iâm at the height my career and my other life as Spider-Woman was just beginning. The mere thought of being tied down scared me. I would want to, but not now. Not in the near future. I removed his hand from my cheek and looked down. âMiguel, I-I canât.â His eyes were wide at my answer. âWhat do you mean you canât?â He asked in disbelief. I walked away from him, towards the large windows of his office at our home. Well, his home now.
âI mean seriously? Y-You want me to retire?â I laughed without any humor and put my hand to my temple. âIn the height of my career you want me to have a family and just a few years after being Spider-Woman?â I looked at him over my shoulder. âI worked so hard to prove to Nueva York, to you, and to myself that I was worthy of taking on the mantle of being a Spider-Woman. To prove that I am ready to sacrifice and take risks and you,â I turned to look at him, seeing the disheartened look on his face. âI love you, Miguel. But I canât do what you want. I know that my time as Spider-Woman isnât up yet. I want to explore the world and I wouldnât want to be tied down.â I slowly made my way towards him. I cupped his cheek and made him look at me. I could see the tears forming in his eyes and I could feel myself start to tear up too. âIâm sorry, Miguel. I canât give you what you want right now. Iâm sorry it had to end this way, but maybe you can find someone else that would,â A tear rolled down his face. âGive you what you want.â I finished and wiped his tears away.
âBut, mi amor, I-I canât see anyone else to have a future with. I always knew it would be you,â He said softly. âMiguel, I canât give it to you. Not right now, not in the near future.â I replied just as softly. âThen Iâll wait, my love. Iâll wait for you.â Miguel reached for my right hand and gave it a gentle kiss.
âBut, I donât want us to end. I love you too much to let you go, and without you by my side will be torture.â He said, looking at me. âMaybe just teach me better, hm? I donât have to retire yet when I have a hot teacher that will be willing to teach me.â Miguel laughed and put our foreheads together. I looped my arms around his neck as he put his hands on my hips.
âMaybe I should.â

- i don't know anything but i know i miss you.
[warnings: a bit sad, a little angsty, just teenage love that i will never have, not proofread]
[a/n: i tried to do it in a sort of 2nd pov? i think it ended up pretty good? so... i might also try to write another miguel story? but i'm trying to figure out if it should be smut or angsty ]
All your life, you and Miles have been the best of friends. You were neighbors, classmates, play pals. You guys were never not together, whether it be skating or even going to his Uncle Aaronâs. When you got accepted into Visions Academy, Miles strived to get accepted just so the two of you can be together. His parents supported him in his decision thinking that it would be a great opportunity for him to learn more.
ââI love you, dad.ââ You mimicked Milesâ voice before laughing loudly. You guys were sitting in the cafeteria, surrounded by other students eating lunch. You could barely eat anything since youâve been laughing at Miles the whole time.
âYeah, yeah. Tease me all you want.â He groaned and slammed his head on the table. A few looks of concern came your way at the commotion. You stifle a laugh and rub Milesâ back.
âDonât be so hard on yourself, Morales. Itâs the first day of classes! Everythingâs hectic, everythingâs hard!â You told him with a smile. Miles groaned at the statement and propped his arm up and resting his head on it. He attempted to grab a fry from your plate before you smacked his hand. âHey, I bought you your lunch. Donât waste it.â You were quick to scold him and gave his tray a light shove. You took a sip of your Diet Coke Zero before continuing to eat your fries and bacon cheeseburger. âBut your fries look way tastier!â He protested and made another move for your tray.
âMiles, I bought the exact same thing for you.â
âWell, stolen food is still better.â
You rolled your eyes. âHowâs your first day? Hopefully not as eventful as mine.â Miles asked before popping more fries in his mouth.
âWell, I was late for the first class, then I went to grab some stuff from my locker but clearly underestimated how much time I need to go to the Physics Classroom which was on the other side of the building,â You sighed and grabbed fries from his tray and munched on them.
âThen I tripped going up the stairs, but some guy named Harry helped me up.â You finished and drank from your cup. Miles laughed at your story and his eyes lit up.
âOh yeah, Uncle Aaronâs been asking about you! He told us to drop by sometime.â
You let out a laugh and shook your head. âI canât make time this week, Miles. Itâs only the first day and I have a lot of things to finish.â
He groaned and realized he had to finish things as well, especially the essay assigned by their physics teacher.
-
âHey, Miles. Did you meet your Uncle Aaron last night? You didnât text after you said you left your dorm.â You were quick to approach him in the hallway. âWait, did you just grow a couple of inches? We were at about the same height yesterday? Or am I hallucinating?â You fired question after question and you failed to notice how each question agitated Miles.
âLook, I-I donât know either, okay? Stop asking so many questions!â He stopped and yelled. The whole hallway became quiet as they gawked at the pair of you. You were stunned and hurt. âI-I was just worried, Miles. I didnât mean to-â Before you could even finish your sentence, he bolted out the hallway and left you there. Other students stared at you before resuming whatever they were doing. You sighed and went back to class before you could overthink what was happening.

In the past days, it was revealed that Peter Parker was the man behind the mask of Spider-Man. Unfortunately, he passed due to the earthquake that day Miles stopped talking to you. For the past few days, you havenât heard much from him, only knowing that he hung around a blond girl named, âGwanda.â His parents reached out to you hoping you knew what was going on with Miles since he hasnât been talking to them either. They told you that his Uncle Aaron passed and the new Spider-Man was probably the one that killed him.
You figured youâd reach out to him by going to his dorm. You knew his roommate, Ganke, from your chemistry class and asked him where their dorm was. Later on that day, you knocked on the door, seeing a shadow moving around the room. You knocked gently and called out. With no response, you just talked. âHey, Miles. Itâs me. I-I know youâre probably busy there but I hope you can hear me. Something-Something happened to your Uncle Aaron,â You choked back a sob as tears began to form in your eyes. âI think itâd be best if your family told you about that.â You took a shaky breath.
âMiles, I donât know anything but I know I miss you. I miss how we hang out and laugh at each otherâs jokes. How we listen to each otherâs music,â You heard a faint shuffle before you continued, âand how you make me the happiest person when weâre together. This is probably going to be the shittiest way I confess but I like you, Miles. I always have. Youâre my best friend and I was always afraid Iâd lose you if I said anything.â You leaned your head against the door.
âI know you feel pressured from your family and maybe even from me. But your family and I push you to do your best because we know you can do it. You are special, Miles. You have this spark inside of you and it is amazing. Just keep doing you and weâll support you. Weâre here for you, Miles.â A tear ran down your face and you were quick to wipe it away. You sniffed as you tried to hold back your tears. âWe donât have to talk soon. Take your time, okay? Iâll wait for you.â
-
Later on, you found yourself walking around Brooklyn to clear your head. The earthquake caused by the Fisk Tower got you shaken and felt the need to take a breather. You still havenât heard from Miles. You looked at your phone for any new notifications and the picture of you and Miles on your middle school graduation looked back at you.
âIt isnât safe for young people to be out at night.â A voice pretending to be gruff and deep informing you. You looked up with a gasp. âY-Youâre that new Spider-Man! The one that just took down Fisk right?â
He let out a nervous laugh before continuing his deep voice. âT-Thatâs me!â You raised an eyebrow and observed his figure. You circled around him as he stood still. âLook, you have to get home before you-â
âMiles?â The lens of his mask grew wide.
âW-What?â
âYou remind me of my friend, Miles. He does this stupid deep voice thing when he makes fun of some older guys that annoy us.â
âO-OhâŠâ
âUnlessâŠâ You put a hand on your chin as you began to think.
âHow about I just get you home before something bad happens to you?â
-
The new Spider-Man swung you back at the Visions Academy. To say the experience was terrifying was an understatement. You were clinging to him like a baby koala. He made sure to gently land on the rooftop of the building and set you down just as gentle. He stood on the ledge, ready to leave and bid you a farewell, you cut him off.
âI know itâs you, Miles. I can smell your âuniqueâ cologne that I gifted you last Christmas.â You told him. You slowly approached him until you were on the ledge. You leaned against it as he sat down.
âIs that why you were avoiding us?â You asked him softly and looked at him. He took his mask off and looked down at the busy street below.
âYeah. I wasâŠtrying to figure things out. I didnât know who to talk toâŠâ You let out a sigh and looked out at the city. The bright lights lit the city up like stars in the night sky. The wind was cold and you shivered through your thin sweater.
âI-I heard everything from earlierâŠabout how you miss me and that youâll support me and all of that..â You were thankful that it was dark as your face heated up. âAnd how you like me.â Miles finished and looked at you. âI-I meant what I said, Miles. Itâs up to you but I understand if you donât want to talk or be friends anymore after that-â You rambled nervously. Miles chuckled and wrapped an arm around your shoulder. âDonât worry. I like you too.â Your face flushed red again as you hid your face in your hands. Miles laughed and gently tugged your hands out of your face. He got down the ledge and stood beside you, leaning against the ledge.
âHow about a movie date at my place?â He suggested.
âHow about we go to the Arts Museum then we watch a movie? Like Back to the Future?â
âOnly if you buy pizza.â
âAs long as you buy some ice cream.â
âDeal.â
