The problem I have with the “it’s performative to share videos of Gaza” and “you shouldn’t traumatize yourself watching videos of death” narrative is that it’s literally the opposite of what people in Gaza are asking. They are in an Internet black out. Palestinians are risking air strikes, tank, and sniper fire to get to high enough ground to maybe catch Internet service via e-sim to share these videos. Their video content is the evidence of genocide and the only counter narrative to Israeli propaganda.
Only Al Jazeera has international news on the ground and their journalists have been routinely targeted and killed for sharing these videos. Western media spreads IOF propaganda without fact checking but makes sure you know the Palestinian Health Ministry is “Hamas run.” CNN gets Israeli approval of its stories as a deal for access.
Why do you think Motaz was permitted to leave? His account reached 15 million people (18 now). He was too high profile to kill but evacuation would effectively stop his coverage. (This is not a criticism of Motaz in any way. Let that man live.) High engagement with Palestinian journalists on social media is protection. There is a reason Israel had to kill Al Jazeera bureau chief Wael Dahdouh’s entire family instead of targeting him directly. Motaz may not be here without viral sharing. Sending e-sims to Gaza would not be a thing without viral sharing.
You should absolutely engage in self care but if you think never sharing or watching on the ground coverage of a genocide is helpful to stopping the genocide, I am baffled. This is not something mainstream media is capturing. Consider the extent to which Israel spread propaganda videos to normalize bombing hospitals. Without social media coverage, most young people would not hear the Palestinian side. Congo and Sudan would remain completely unheard of and they’re still not getting the attention required for change in part because of Internet blackouts the moment attention was drawn. (The other part is anti-Black racism.)
Palestinians absolutely get the right to say I can’t watch this. Rest is your revolution in this genocide.
White people in particular use these narratives of protecting our mental health as a way to disengage. I am not saying you need to watch 24 hours a day of footage, but yes you should be sharing what’s happening on the ground. And yes, you should do more than reshare.
I am neurodiverse and mentally ill. I am chronically ill. I get our limitations. But you need to reflect where you are actually engaging in self care to sustain your advocacy and using these narratives to center your comfort and manage your guilt.
i don't think people in gaza will have a ramadan kareem this year, they will have one though. one day, a ramadan without bombs, without death, without starvation, without pain, without war, on a free (from the river to the sea) palestine. until then, keep them in your thoughts and prayers everyday. donate if/whenever you can, keep posting/reblogging about palestine however you can.
ramadan kareem everyone. i hope it brings patience, victory and salvation to gaza. amen
Where do I even begin? I'm appalled. The Canadian government living up to its roots in colonial-settler violence... this is beyond criminal. Contact your MP's. This erasure and anti-Palestinian racism is unacceptable.

If you're having trouble keeping up with what's going on in Palestine because of US news coverage of university protests, here are some articles you can read and a video you can watch:
While CNN & all the other mainstream media try to paint the university protests as "pro terrorism" (which they're not, they're literally anti-war protests.) Palestinians are being slaughtered by the minute.
Please don't stop speaking about Palestine.
