Oh *wow*

Oh *wow*

This is so cool!

I gotta try it out sometime!

Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.

This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)

If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!

Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...

Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!

You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!

Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!

I've Been Getting Back Into Clangen Lately After I Noticed It Got An Update From A Little While Back,

I've been getting back into Clangen lately after I noticed it got an update from a little while back, and have a whole bunch of characters I plan to draw!

Here is one of them:

Snowpelt

The backstory for her is that her mother, Agavestar, had to start over the clan after all the other members were killed in a wildfire.

She got whitecough when she was 6 moons old, but luckily, her older sister Burrowspots saved her life after rushing out and getting the right herbs to heal her back up.

Snowpelt is the second oldest of the three sisters that came from Agavestar, the youngest of them being Cottondapple (you'll be seeing art of all of them soon)

Had a lot of fun drawing her, helped me experiment with what kind of style I want for my cats☆

Click for better quality btw lol

Man this is SO cool and I WISHED it happened in the book-

It'll definitely be part of my fanon now, that's for sure

A large nightwing with black and green scales stands over a white icewing. They are inside an ice cave filled with the remains of dragons that have been frozen in place.

Foeslayer's Lament

The following is an alternative retelling of the final scene from Wings of Fire: Winter Turning, based on my own feelings and thoughts while reading the book.

A comic page featuring Foeslayer the Nightwing and Winter the Icewing. They are standing inside an ice cave and discussing the nature of a magic enchantment on Foeslayer's shackles that keeps her trapped inside the cave.

Winter thinks he can break the enchantment by virtue of being royalty, while Foeslayer asserts his knowledge of the situation is incomplete and that he won't be able to free her through conventional ways.
A comic page featuring Foeslayer the Nightwing and Winter the Icewing. They are continuing their conversation from the last page.

Foeslayer reiterates that the enchantment cannot be broken conventionally. Winter asks what the exact wording of the imprisoning spell was. Foeslayer explains the conditions in detail, among them that the spell is specific to her and keeps her trapped in an endless cycle of death and revival, as well as preventing her from leaving. She repeats that the situation is hopeless. Winter disagrees and states he knows of a way to circumvent the spell and free her.
A comic page featuring Foeslayer the Nightwing and Winter the Icewing, still talking in the ice cave.

Winter explains that he can free Foeslayer, but that the process will be unpleasant for her, and also demands she promises not to take revenge against his people for her imprisonment. She states that she never harbored any ill will towards Icewings in the first place and just wanted to be at peace. Winter accepts this and produces a gold-colored necklace from his wrist pouch, holds it up with a grimace, and tells Foeslayer to brace herself.
A comic page showing two dragons, Winter the Icewing and a Skywing named Pyrite, walking outdoors through a snow-covered landscape. It is night.

Winter is watching the sky for Icewings who could fly by and spot them. After a while he says that they walked far enough away from the cave and that Pyrite can take off her necklace now. Pyrite is apprehensive but Winter comforts her, telling her it will be all right. Pyrite then takes off the necklace and begins convulsing as her shape and color shifts.
A comic page featuring Winter the Icewing and Foeslayer the Nightwing.

Foeslayer gasps after shedding the Pyrite identity imposed by the magical necklace and returning to her original form. She doubles over in momentary confusion and discomfort. Winter acknowledges her state, but urges that they need to leave the Ice Kingdom immediately before they are spotted and killed. Foeslayer agrees and the two fly off into the night sky, heading towards the sea. Foeslayer states that she never wants to see the Ice Kingdom again, to which Winter responds with silence.

I vividly remember getting to this part in the book. I listened to the explanation that an animus curse was keeping Foeslayer trapped in the Diamond Trial cavern and a lightbulb went on in my head.

"Oh, the curse is probably phrased in a way to specifically target Foeslayer, and Winter has an item on him right now that can obscure a person's identity," I thought with glee, "the author deliberately set that up as a Checkov's Gun, this is so brilliant! I can't believe how well this all fits together, oh my god!"

Then that never happened. Really, the Pyrite necklace never comes up again; Winter probably still has it on him today, forgotten in his pouch thingy. It felt a bit deflating.

I thus spent the better part of the last two weeks writing and illustrating this comic because I wanted to see how that scene would play out with the Checkov's Gun triggered. I think it still largely hits the same beats as the original narrative and ends in roughly the same place.

It's very possible this is all very silly and my perception of a smoking gun in the narrative is a huge delusion. Whatever it may be though, I hope you'll find this entertaining, or at least interesting as a thought experiment.
