“Hey!” he whines, though you know it’s half-hearted. Right now he’d much rather hold you than that phone.
You place your hands on his bare chest. “I don’t want to see that phone again. No distractions. I only get to have you one night a year after all.”
Jungkook smiles, hands trailing up your sides. Warm, rough, so familiar yet it’s been so long it feels new. “You already had me—twice I may add. What more could a woman want?”

Rapping your fist against Jungkook’s door, you pull your soft lilac robe tighter around your body. The dorm building’s hallway is cold and you forgot to put on socks. What even is he doing this time of night? It’s just past midnight on a Wednesday, he has a 9am class tomorrow. The only reason that you know this is because you also have a 9am class, and you two usually walk together.
You knock again, louder this time, switching weight from foot to foot in an attempt to stay warm. It’s not like him to not be home at this time. He didn’t even pick up his phone when you called him, because you have some courtesy to at least not show up unannounced at his dorm in the middle of the night. But this was a real emergency and you need him to open the damn door.
Just when you’re ready to knock again, the door opens and your spit just about goes down the wrong pipe. Coughing, you double take Jungkook standing in the door in nothing but a towel—hair and body dripping wet from a shower. Tattoos and muscles on full display, you shake yourself and meet his unreadable gaze.

Looking at the clock, you see that it’s almost five in the morning. He is never home this late without notice. Not once in these past four months that you’ve been married to him have you woken up to an untouched bed.
Your heart hammers in your chest, the rain that plummets down against your window doesn’t help. Storms don’t scare you, but the crashing sounds of thunder and lightning put you on edge. They make it impossible for you to sleep.
Jungkook’s presence would be welcome right now. As much as you kicked and screamed when your family had demanded you married the son of another mafia boss, you had no other choice. Now, you find that there would’ve been worse men to have to marry than him. Even if your marriage wasn’t out of love, but the mere need to unite two clashing fronts, it’s not all bad.

“Did you have a nice time, Mr and Mrs Kim?” Yunsoo asks politely as Namjoon stands behind you in the porch, helping you to remove your coat one arm at a time.
“We did. Maybe too much, actually,” he chortles as you nod along agreeably, eyes closed and smile wide. You totally miss the way Yunsoo giggles at your tipsy behaviour - too busy fighting with the straps of your high-heels to catch Namjoon sneaking her an extra large tip on top of her normal fee in hopes that she might not think to mention this to her own mother just a few doors down.
He knows you’ll be mortified if your teenage babysitter lets slip how she’d seen you stumbling up your driveway to the rest of the neighbourhood, so he tries not to mind how decidedly light his wallet feels the time he’s waving her goodbye and shutting the door behind her, ebony ponytail bobbing away in the distance. It’s worth it to maintain the ridiculous smile on your face that he sees when he turns back to you, sat with your knees turned inward, hands outstretched and grabbing for him like some overgrown child.
“Think you can make it up the stairs?” Namjoon helps you up from where you’d plonked yourself down on the last but one step, smiling when you wrinkle your nose at him, apparently offended.
“I haven’t had that many,” you insist, jutting out your bottom lip. He tugs on it, tutting his tongue against the inside of his teeth.
“If you say so, baby.” You grin, mollified by his acquiescence, and seeing you so easily pleased only makes Namjoon smile harder in reply as you begin your ascent to the second floor of your modest, three-bed home.
He’s glad you’ve finally managed to let your hair down for at least one night. You always work so hard, relentlessly striving to be the perfect employee, the perfect mother, the perfect wife; the very best you can be. He tells you it’s unnecessary - that your best is already more than good enough - and yet tonight is still the first time he’s seen you really, truly relax in far too many months now.
“Careful!” he warns in hushed tones as you almost trip halfway up the stairs, hands out and fingers splayed to brace your fall. Luckily, Namjoon saves you quickly enough for you to not to need to worry, his one hand rested on your hip and the other encircling your arm. “You’re gonna wake him.”
At the mention of your little boy, your sweet, sleepy, eyes suddenly ping wide.
“Oh!” you whisper, hurrying up the last couple of steps with such enthusiasm that it’s almost as though you’d forgotten your little boy was there, sleeping soundly where’d you’d left him some few hours earlier. Namjoon’s warning goes completely unheeded; you’re unconcerned with the way the landing floorboards squeak under your excited footsteps, nor the way the bedroom doorknob clunks as you turn it smartly to the right.
Now that you’ve set your sights on something, it surprises Namjoon how fast you’re able to move, and it’s with a cringe that he scrambles after you in hopes of intercepting whatever ill-conceived notion has you creeping towards your son’s crib in the dark, arms outstretched with wanting.
“He’s sleeping,” he hisses under his breath, slipping inside after you and shutting the door to as quietly as he can, “Leave him!” You pause just long enough to look over at your shoulder at him, a thin sliver of light from the hallway illuminating the angles of your face and the colourful animals that decorate the wall stood behind you. The mural had been painstakingly painted there by Jungkook just days before your son’s arrival into the world, and even now the sight of it makes Namjoon smile.

“Going up?”
He had simply nodded with a placidly raised brow, standing in the far corner of the elevator, so you got in and punched your floor number, doing the natural thing and avoiding all eye-contact with this well-dressed and extremely handsome individual.
Unfortunately for you, this particular elevator in the museum you were attending the opening ceremony of had just been repaired, and the electrician had done a poor job. No more than thirty seconds after the doors closed the two of you in, a great thud sounded outside the carriage and the elevator ground to a sudden halt.
“Oh, fuck,” you immediately blurt, dashing forward to jam your fingers furiously onto all of the buttons.
“That’s not going to help,” the man behind you returned in an accented American English.

First of all, it’s important to understand that this guy has many placements in his chart that are working perfectly, at their best capacity. That by itself already means two things: he’s obviously good at many things since he has an easier time than most controlling his mind and body and also that he’s very picky and demanding since he expects a lot of himself and others. That being said, Jungkook is also a perfeccionist when talking about relationships: he’ll analyze everything that is involved in it to be the absolute best at it. As if the world was holding a competition of the best boyfriend alive™. So while that’d be awesome for his partner, to be as spoiled as that person would be, it could also mean some exaggeration. ‘Cause Jungkook needs the person to be as into it as he is, constantly working as hard as he is, you know?

Art is more than what meets the eye. If you don’t get the same sensation the second time, it can be the consequence of only two things. An internal, personal change. Or a change in the painting. As subtle as a change in strokes or hues. A slight tilt leftwards — a change in emotions.
Your eyes glide across the set of paintings of Dutch tulips. The fields filled with colours, the spread of the paint — not unlike Van Gogh, but far too subtle for him. This set, painted years before Monet’s famous waterlily series, is more vibrant. Yet there’s something too bold about the one to the far left.
You take a shaky breath, swallowing thickly. The texture of the brush, the vibrancy and ambiance. It brings forward a sickly feeling of familiarity. For a moment you think your mind is playing tricks on you. That it wants to see him in this painting. But you can’t deny your heart’s ache.
This is him. His uncanny ability to mimic impressionism to the stroke. Precision to match imperfections. A mirror of another’s emotions that’s slightly clouded by his own.
Your chest constricts, tears stinging at the corners of your eyes. There’s a quiet night in Paris, a warm and gentle embrace. His lips caressing your skin, paint streaks on your body from where his fingers had been stained. Silken sheets and words of love. Words of love that had been erased by a single mishap. A forgery fell through and you’d never seen him again. No last goodbye, no last je t’aime — nothing but an empty apartment and a broken heart.
Jin calls your name and you startle. “Are you alright?”
“Jin, this painting,” you whisper, no faith in your own voice. The memory of him burns in you, scraping your insides until you’re shaking. “It’s Vante’s.”
