you could say your life has been successful so far.

you practised the sport you loved since you were little. you managed to finish school with good marks even when your club was the most demanding. you were called into international duty pretty soon, which surprised no one, because everyone could see you had talent. you were a rising football star, and you were thankful for every opportunity you’d been given throughout your life. but if there was one thing you would never be grateful for, was the mediatic harassment you had to live through every day for the rest of your life.

sure, being a lioness was amazing, but scrolling placidly on social media and stumbling into a post of yourself, criticising your every move, look and decision was awful, and it made you shiver in anger almost every time. so when you found yourself in a relationship with the one and only mason mount, you had been strictly private since day one. but you couldn’t lie, it was a little saddening to be unable to post and brag about your amazing relationship.

when mason was asked one day about his love life, he had been unable to hide the fact that he was seeing someone, but never explicitly saying anything. your lips, on the other hand, were hermetically sealed. you never gave any information about your personal life. and yes, people knew you were friends with some lads from the men’s national team, but mason and you were incredible in playing the part of just friends. he was the best boyfriend you could've asked for, respecting your privacy wish from day one. he never argued, never demanded, always put you before anything else, even himself at times. you rarely went out in public together, and if you did, you had to arrive at the place separately and even wear a disguise if possible. you were a little more free when one of you was playing in another country, though, knowing media coverage would be more focused on the game itself.

but a relationship with so much secrecy can grow distant.

it was one cold, windy night when mason had arrived at your door, knocking relentlessly until you had answered with such a fright, and he let himself in immediately. he looked desperate, a bit annoyed, too. you, in your shocked state, asked him what was wrong.

“i can’t do this anymore,” he had said, marking your heart with a small crack, matching your voice.

“w-what?” it had come out more like a whimper than a question.

“y/n, i can’t keep up with all the lies and the secrets, i can’t,” his tone was rushed, as if someone was chasing him. you came closer to him and grabbed his arms so he could start to calm down a little, but he evaded your grasp almost violently, “no, don’t shush me. you know what? if you’re not ready to handle a public relationship, then maybe you shouldn’t be in a relationship at all.”

his words had you shaking in rage while you turned his ultimatum into an argument. it evolved into a full screaming match, both of you breaking and throwing things around. but somehow, in the nick of time, you’d managed to slow things down and turn it into angry, make-up sex. mason fell asleep next to you right after, the adrenaline from earlier draining rapidly from his body. you couldn’t sleep. getting up to clean the mess you’d made during the fight, you started crying in silence as you picked up pieces of the ceramic vase you loved, now shattered, its fragments scattered on the floor. you were not crying about the vase itself, but rather about how it represented your relationship, in a way. although you could glue the pieces back together, some tiny fragments of it would be gone forever. when you were done, you sat on the couch, allowing yourself to sob freely while you thought of what could’ve been if he had left that night.

mason was right, although you hated to admit it. you couldn’t let your fear of criticism control your life, you had to do something about it and you had to make things right. it wasn’t fair for him, you were being too selfish. still sniffling, you made your way back to the bedroom and laid beside him, your heart breaking once more when he absentmindedly pulled you closer to him. you were definitely the worst girlfriend in the world.

it was two days after the fight that you thought of a way to make it up to him. you’d talked about it, of course, but even after you’d admitted your mistakes and the relationship was saved, you couldn’t just leave it like that. he was hurt because he couldn’t just love you like he wanted, you were hurt because of his unthoughtful words, but you knew it was up to you to make it happen, you knew he would continue respecting your desire of a private personal life.

although the game had been difficult, with none of the teams taking the lead in almost the whole encounter, you knew you had to change that. the clock marked the 78th minute of the match, and you managed to slip through the defence and kick the ball straight and deep into the net. your teammates ran with you in a frenzy as you made your way to the camera, your fingers marking a letter ‘M’ just over your heart. you smiled widely, hugging your girls as you finished celebrating.

mason, who was watching from the stands and on incognito mode, nearly cried when he saw your celebration. it was thoughtful, yet private, perfect for him and for you. but he didn’t expect what happened after the game, when you were asked about that odd celebration, simply replying, “it’s… my boyfriend’s initial. he’s here, somewhere, of course, he’s always there to support me when i play… except when he can’t make it because he’s playing, too. i always go and support him, as well.”

watching the interview from one of the screens, he felt his heart was about to implode, knowing fans would be fast to connect the dots and start with the theories... it was basically like going public, wasn't it?
