I Really Wanna Make That Red Dress And That Green Dress. They Are So Pretty! And I Bet Theyre Also Comfy

I really wanna make that red dress and that green dress. They are so pretty! And I bet they’re also comfy and warm!!

Hollywood has no concept of what 5th century Romans looked like. If I'm watching a movie about the final days of the Western Roman Empire, I should be seeing zero togas. It's like if you made a movie about the Trump administration, you wouldn't have people dressed like the founding fathers. That's how wrong it is.

This is what 5th century Romans looked like:

I think the problem is that pop culture has this theme park version of history that treats time periods like distinct worlds with no fluidity between them. In Roman Times, people dressed like this vs Medieval Times when people dressed like that. But that is obviously not how time works. The end of the Western Roman Empire led directly into and overlapped with the Middle Ages, and the aesthetics we associate with medieval Europe were already long established.

On a related note, the "barbarians" didn't dress like you think they did either. Less of this:

More of this:

(Art by Angus McBride)

Again, the end of the Western Roman Empire was the beginning of medieval Europe, and it already looked like it.

The notable exception was the Franks, who apparently really did dress like that:

There really is an exception to everything, and it's usually the French.

The jewel thief accent is so annoying to me, everytime! Specifically, because we see that he is actually able to do an English accent well! I’m doing a rewatch with a friend (their first watch through) and everytime Hardison does a new accent I bring up that he CAN do a good accent, so why did he CHOOSE for that character’s accent to be SO bed!?! Argh!!!

Tl;Dr: that shit was a choice. -_-

Hardison's fake accents are so endearing to me. like sometimes he explicitly has to be "guy from X country," but often, the character he's playing could totally be an American! could totally have his normal voice! but nope he rolls a d20 in his head right before speaking and now the jewel thief has an awful British accent. the middleman is a stereotype of French people. just because, just for no reason. this show is great.

“Why should rich people pay more” because fuck ‘em

“So you are okay for paying more when you have money” I am not excluded from ‘fuck ‘em’ when relevant
