As an autistic person, I am fucking terrified of what's gonna happen around December.

A few months ago it was announced that Amber Heard is gonna be in a movie about an autistic boy in an El Salvadorian town in the 1800s who is accused of being possessed, and Amber Heard's character is an American psychiatrist who is going to cure the boy.

If you don't see the problem with this premise, you either live under a rock or you hate autistic people. The fact that one article about the film was written by a Heard supporter who described the boy as having "special abilities" is proof of the kind of ableism that is rampant in "leftist" circles.

Autism is a DISABILITY, it's not a disease, it's not a superpower, it's a DISABILITY!!!!!!

Does it make life harder for us, sure! But we don't need to be cured, and disabled people have been saying that for years!

During the Sia situation, so many non-autistic people were attacking the autistic community because how dare we want a say on how we want to be represented, not to mention just recently disabled people were attacked for asking Lizzo to remove an ableist slur from a recent song. I am worried that this situation will be much worse cause it's happening close to the Depp vs Heard case.

I don't give a fuck what your stance is on the Depp vs Heard trial, Amber Heard is profiting on the dehumanization of autistic people and if you support her, you are an ableist piece of shit!

Day 4 and 5 and 6, and i don’t even know anymore

Let’s get this shit started, shall we? Three days at the time, to procrastinate on recommended reading... But it will be worth it <3 Days 4-6 for the challenge of @myhoneststudyblr

Y’all know those stories about golden children that starting failing at uni? I am an overachiever who just realized that if I am going to survive till next year - there is no way I can overachieve if I want to also: a) have enough money to sustain myself b) not eat trash and live in a trash pile c) not die at 18 due to sleeping 3 hours a day.

On the bright side - I cleaned the bathroom. I picked up my gown from the campus (i am pretty sure I am studying at modern Hogwarts tho?) and I also got a job! I am excited. As much as it seems like something you say to please your boss - this is my favourite grocery shop ever. I could DIE for that shop. They let me buy like 4-5 days worth of food for 2 people for 14 pounds.

How long have you had a studyblr?

... it will be like, my 9th day now.

Have you ever done a challenge before?

I am not much of a challenge person. My brain just resonates with “well, you gotta”, so if I decide that I am getting up at 6 am every day, then I just... will. The thing is, life sneaks through the backdoor, so Tumblr challenges are far from my priority. They are fun though, I think I did like one or two when I was younger ;)

Why did you decide to do this challenge and what is your goal?

Honestly, I am here to empower all of the folks that also get up at 6 am, do their lectures, prepare dinner, do their seminars, clean the hourse, do their readings, attend bussinesses and then still find time to be their own person.

I wanna show to the world and to myself that it’s attainable. And that it doesn’t have to be a fight for perfection. I will probably slip more times that imaginable and that’s okay. I think we need such realistic outlook on studying and bettering yourself. It surely would have helped me a lot ;)

Also, I hope it will make me more consistent. I do study everyday, so we are off for a good start.

idk im really tired of 15-17 year olds who have never interacted with the gay community irl and spend too much time on tiktok trying to act like the authority on all that is lgbt+

My dear lgbt+ kids,

If you want a conversation to keep going, you have to keep giving them something to reply to.

A (super oversimplified!) example for not doing so:

Person A: "How was your weekend?"

Person B "Good."

Person B may give such a short reply because they don't want to annoy Person A by stuffing too much info into their response or because they don't want to embarrass themselves by getting too personal right away. But short, closed-off replies like that are often seen as a sign of disinterest or even annoyance. Person A is likely to assume that Person B doesn't want to talk more about their weekend (or even that they do not want to talk to them at all) and won't ask further questions.

This type of reply cuts off the flow of the conversation. Many people make the (subconscious) assumption "Well, if Person A really cares about me, they will keep asking". But from Person A's point of view, asking more questions after a closed-off reply likely seems like prying, like crossing a boundary and bothering Person B with unwanted conversation - which they avoid because they care about Person B!

You may think now "Yeah, makes sense but I don't want to launch into a huge monologue and embarrass myself! What if I give a detailed answer and it turns out they just wanted some quick small-talk?" Those are good points - a detailed description of everything you did over the weekend would not always be the appropriate answer, either (and if your natural response tends to be on the shorter side, you wouldn't feel comfortable doing that anyway, so that'd be useless advice).

So, what to do instead? The important part is to open up your reply. It can still be short - just try to put in one little thing Person A can reply to.

This can be as direct as a question:

Person A: "How was your weekend?"

Person B "Good, thankyou. How was yours?"

Or it can be a statement they can reply to:

Person A: "How was your weekend?"

Person B "Good, I went to the beach!"

As you see in these (again, very oversimplified) examples, you don't need to give a long speech or put in lots of private details. You don't force Person A to do so, either. You just give them something to reply to if they want to do so. They can choose to deepen the conversation by telling you details about their weekend now or asking about your beach trip - and if they really just wanted to exchange some pleasant small-talk, they can go that route and give a shorter, more superficial answer.

In either case, you signaled interest in a conversation by giving an open reply and are likely to leave a positive impression on them!

With all my love,

Your Tumblr Dad
