Worldbuilders naming towns: I named this town Elygwe’meth which means “Where the Dearly Beloved King died next to his Lover” in the language I invented and also a combination of the Old English word for diamonds and the Maori word for apples since that’s their main exports
People in real life naming towns: I named this town Big Falls cause big fall there

Here’s some sketches of the bat bois from the night court. Did these a while back and forgot to post em. Struggled a bit with the faces but I think they turned out alright.

Werewolves & Animal Shifters of Color
dusty-soul
So I’m writing a werewolf story to kind of talk about intersectionality or race, ability, and a fictional werewolf related oppression. One of the ways I’m trying to avoid the association between my werewolves of color and the stereotype that poc are violent animals is by showing them has more in control than the white werewolves (and this makes sense to me considering how much more self aware and restrained poc have to be compared to white people).
But I’m worried that this either won’t help or will be twisted around so that sense where the poc are changing, and it’s rapid will look like the poc is closer to the wolf than the white werewolves.
IDK I’m really worried about fucking this up. I think I’ve got the ablism aspect of it down (because I’m disabled) but I don’t want to harm any poc in my writing and I want disabled poc to be able to relate to this story as much as possible.
POC Werewolves, White Werewolves, and Control
So your question is essentially “will the werewolves of color transforming less violently than the white werewolves make it seem like they’re already closer to wolves?” and that depends on why they transform less violently than white werewolves, as expressed in the story itself.
Your intent is to avoid stereotypes of People of Color as violent and justify it with the fact that People of Color typically have to have more restraint and self awareness than white people (though how much and how so depends on the race and individual fyi).
So that’s all fine and true, but without a clearly defined context within the story of why werewolves of color tend to transform less violently (or why they even need to, if applicable), we are left to assume that the PoC are suggested to be naturally more animalistic, which you don’t want.
So I suggest you make the reasons clear some place in the story. Are their repercussions to these violent transformations that target wolves of color over white werewolves? How does life as a werewolf of color cause one to have less violent transformations? Make said reasons clear in the narrative, and you should be fine.

In a story I’m planning the main character is a wolf and in her human form has dark skin. In this world “beast men” are widely discriminated against/abused. As a result of her past in an illegal fighting arena my MC can initially be aggressive and very defensive with others. Wolves and other animals in human form come in a wide variety of skin colors and I’ll have normal human POC in positions of power as well but I still worry about falling into harmful tropes with her behavior or skin color.
Dark-skinned Wolf Shifter with Aggressive/Defensive Behavior
Make clear of her background so we know where the aggression comes from, then make her a 3-D character who is more than aggressive and defensive; let us see other sides of her.
Also see the FAQ and stereotypes tag as variations of this question (minus the wolf-ness) has been answered numerous times, though I am glad you asked. I’d be more concerned if she were the only beast person of color + her race and if only PoC were beasts.
Anonymous:
I’m writing a fantasy story in which one group of people has the ability to regularly turn into a specific animal. This group values their animal connection and views it as a gift. Also, this group is very large, comprising more than one major civilization, and they coexist with other large groups of people which do not have this ability. Due to the size of the groups, my thought was that both types ought to be racially diverse, and I am committed to writing a diverse world and cast, but I also know that there are harmful tropes connecting POC and animals and I want to tread carefully. I have done some research but I have two specific questions:
Are there specific descriptions or words to avoid?
Do you know if there are any groups where the connection would be too harmful no matter the context who I should leave out of it entirely?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for this blog, it is by far the most valuable writing resource I have come across in some time!
POC Shifter Animal Forms
Good to hear that there’s a diverse mix of both non-shifters and shifters, as it’d be problematic to have only animal-POC vs. white humans. We have several posts on this subject already and i’ll link them after this to avoid being repetitive.
To your concerns: it’s hard to say what specific descriptions or words for you to avoid knowing little about your shifters. Do they retain their human minds and awareness when shifted and have control over their natures? Do shifters face discrimination or are seen as savage or dangerous?
PoC especially Black people are already compared to animals and seen as dangerous (look at how we’re hunted by the police who’ve compared boys like Mike Brown to “demons”). Even Black people’s hair alone has been subjected to comparisons to wild and in need of taming and controlling, so keep that in mind.
If you’ve got characters who think shifters or certain shifters are wild or savage, keep in mind intersectionality to assure animal shifter discrimination isn’t a stand-in for racism. They might think even less of a brown human shifter than a white one of the same animal form, for example.
As for groups to avoid animal connections with; I welcome others to comment on this as to what connections they would rather not see! But I’ll say definitely (and perhaps obviously) no monkey or ape connections to Black people.
Be careful with any “aggressive” beastly connections to PoC in general especially if in contrast the white and/or light-skinned PoC happen to not shift into these sorts of animals or are in more control in their forms over the PoC shifting characters.
It’d been helpful if you gave examples of the sort of animals involved here, but my hunch is that most of the people will shift into big cats, wolves, bears, and such, which is not an issue in itself as long as there’s a healthy mix and all PoC aren’t grouped into beastly animals or ones known for aggression while all the white animals are graceful birds, sea animals and such.
