I had to search the asscrack of Tumblr to find this post! @rock-n-macabre. *NOTE THERE WILL BE MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE: "NEAR DARK" (1987) !*

What I think people refuse to understand about Severen is that he’s very: tactile, intelligent, intentional and manipulative. Severen has this loud persona for a reason. He knows that people are wary around individuals who are unafraid and unashamed to live in their truth. Therefore, Severen is forced to gauge how best to go about a particular situation after making the first move. And because the whole vamparisim angle was never fully explored in the film, we, as the viewers have no idea if the ability to charm, sway or seduce the intended victim is an inherent thing or just a Bill Paxton thing. (I personally think it's a Bill Paxton thing, you can just FEEL his playful, charming, feminine energy radiating through a screen and with his body language. Be it in his movies or interviews.). To me, Severen unconsciously opens up the innate desire within human beings to be wanted, desired and accepted by people who they personally categorize as "other" or "untouchable" and Severen accepts that basic and primal need by being friendly, which people have always seen as a form acceptance. (example: when he purposefully spilled a patrons drink at the bar, insulted him a few times to test his grit before cracking a smile and creating a bubble beard out of the patrons primary drink, before demanding the bartender to give his new "friend" a refill.) Severen is the reason why the bar scene is such an iconic shot in this film. Severen sets the tone of the scene without having to do too much and like clockwork the rest of the clan else falls in line. He's the King of the chess board despite the fact that Jesse acts as the patriarch of the clan. If Jesse's the leader then Severen is the foundation.

In my opinion, Severen allows his victims to get a little high off of the power they think they hold over him before he kills them, which is why he lets them think they have the upper hand. (Example: when Severen pretended to back off from the proverbial d*ck measuring contest he started with a patron after he told him (the patron) to lick his own drink up off of the bar. Or when he allowed another patron to choke him, to which he laughed, he stole his shades and snapped his neck before feeding on him.)

It's his twisted version of: "one last hurrah" before he kills them. Despite how hypocritical his actions are, Severen seems to be a big believer in: "Living your own experience and going in and going out of this world on your own terms." He collects and wears his victims memorabilia for Christs sake! --- HEADCANON: (Authors Note: If you're spiritual/Christian and you've made it thus far, don't hesitate to DM me if I unknowingly spread misinformation. I don't know much about spirituality or other forms of Christianity.) It wouldn’t surprise me if the Hooker Clan weren't a tad bit spiritual and superstitious, though the spirituality they choose to follow exists outside of the realm that is Christianity and are open practices that aren't race, culture or community specific, they are very much so contemporary spiritualists, who have a friend of a friend who can help them should they ever be in a magical pinch. I won't discount the HC that Severen is a child of immigrant parents due to his last name: "Van Sickle" so he could've either been brought up as Methodist or Baptist (two popular forms of Christianity during the 1800s), that he could've been brought up praying to Dutch Saints or that he was heavily involved in Celtic/Germanic polytheistic Paganism which were (probably) some of the common practices before Christianity took root. --- I think there's a possibility that Serveren is a little bit of a spiritual, superstitious, paranoid which is why he always trusts his gut and hates when people not to lament over things they can't change. (Example: when Homer brought up how Severen couldn't understand his plight with being stuck as a literal man child once it was revealed that Caleb was bitten.). But once again, people characterize him off of appearance alone and categorize him as this: dumb, horny, rootin', shootin' cowboy who has a bad attitude with an itchy trigger finger, when he doesn't act like that 24/7. (No tea, no shade to folks who love that portrayal, or who write Severen out to be that way. The fanon version of Severen can co-exist with his canon.) Severen, just like everyone else in the clan has a cool down period and that cool down period is after he feeds and when he's spending time with his family. Yes, he comes alive when he kills, he overacts, he overreacts, he's primal and he overindulges, but once he's been sated he acts like a regular 33 year old man who likes to play poker and crack jokes with his family. Severen is a lover of domesticity, family and connection with a dash of psychopathy as an added spice.

We’ll never know if Severen’s more psychotic side was always a part of him, if he experienced any trauma, if he had a good home life, if his psychopathy is a side effect of his vampirisim, if it's another mask to hide the fact that he hates killing but does it so he doesn't lose the only family he has or if he'd act any differently if he were turned by someone else instead of Jesse. We'll never know.

But even then, Severen never uses his past as an excuse, none of them do. Severen is the way he is, because he is the way he is. He's had more than enough time to lament on his past in private if he thinks about it at all. I say all of this to say that Frank Abigail is in his own lane when it comes to vampiric bad boys who like to wear leather, But he doesn't hold a candle to Severen because he's NOT Severen. Frank Abigail NOT Severen's spiritual successor. Frank Abigail is NOT Severen's long lost son. Frank Abigail is NOT Severen, he is Frank Abigail. And Frank Abigail is a selfish asshole who's only out for himself and relishes in lording his power over others. That is who Frank Abigail is and we can love him for those qualities but to compare him to Severen and to say that he is the "modern day" Severen based purely off of aesthetic choice rather than in character quality/motivations etc is a crime! But let’s not compare apples to oranges when we all know that orange juice tastes better than apple juice.

Severen is a far more in depth of a character.....and that CHARISMA that is what makes Severen.....Severen (amongst many other attributes).

People wear leather. That includes vampires. I mean...Dwayne from The Lost Boys wears a leather jacket, for example, but are we gonna go and call him Severen too? (BONUS POINTS: After Michael discovers them feeding there on the beach....Dwayne is wearing leather and does have blood post-feeding on him....once again....does this make the man Severen?)

Vampires are kinda sorta really primal creatures. They ain't gonna be like all pleasant and 'do you mind if I bite you now? No? okay I'll find someone else to bite'...nope. The majority are no fucks given. This is how real vampires act - no Edward Cullen shit here. It may shock some when seeing a feral acting vampire. This is normal. Severen is just boss at it.

Severen is an enigma of his own. No one can copy that energy. You might get some 'Wish versions' but no. This ain't it.
