Hello! I Have A Question About Hypersensitivity! What's It Like To Be Hypersensitive? (Sorry If This
hello! I have a question about hypersensitivity! What's it like to be hypersensitive? (Sorry if this is too personal)
Not too personal at all! I like that question! 😊 /pos
I can give you all of my most common experiences with hypersensitivity... but those are just my experiences. Since I also have ADHD, other neurodivergent people might have different experiences with hypersensitivity. :)
I'll go into detail-
for me personally: I just get extremely overstimulated, sometimes to an extent where my mood drops and/or I get headaches. When I'm overwhelmed in those cases, I tend to get easily irritated and annoyed... somewhat snappy too.
I can react sensitively to: smells, noises, brightness and textures...
textures don't get me overstimulated to the point of headaches, I just get extremely uncomfortable when I feel certain textures. Like oily textures for example: if I feel something oily, I get extremely uncomfortable and feel the need to immediately go wash my hands.. like intensely so I don't feel it anymore. It can also go hand in hand with food textures.. like I can't eat anything with a jelly or wobbly consistency, without gagging and getting sick to my stomach..
For noises: it starts off with more sudden and loud noises that build up to a really uncomfortable feeling in my ears.. which could build up to headaches or the weird feeling in my ears intensifying. (If they continue)
For smells: it happens especially often with things as simple as room freshener.. it could be any smell tho... I just get a weird feeling in my nose, I get extremely uncomfortable especially if it's a very overpowering smell... it could even go so far, thatvi feel somewhat sick in my stomach and/or get headaches... sometimes I also hold my breath and try to leave that area as quick as possible, if a smell is too overpowering... or if I simply don't like it.
Brightness is usually just a problem for me if I have a headache and/or already am overstimulated... it usually occurs when I'm trying to sleep. Being caused by screens and/or TV's for example.. I either have to turn them off or I turn away and somehow try to cover my eyes. sometimes it can also be the sky outside, like when the sky us intensely white... I cannot stand that because my eyes get distracted by the brightness, even if I don't focus on it.. which just leads me to having headaches..
In general tho, hyperstive people have the tendency to be easily overwhelmed by too much information. We aren't only influenced by physical stimuli but also emotional stimuli. Which means that we can feel emotions more intensely than people without hypersensitivity.
Hope that could give you an overall view of what it's like. If there's more you want to know you can ask anytime! 😊
