Just had a conversation that turned into me giving my neighbour a 3 hour lecture on why, if your only problem with Trans people is the fact that you hate having to describe yourself as a CIS woman, your actual problem has nothing to do with Trans people.

(Your problem is actually with the people who keep insisting that Trans women aren't women BTW. If they would just shut the fuck up and actually live and let live, you wouldn't feel the need to make the distinction all the time. If cis women and Trans women are equally women, you can just talk about women's rights without ever needing to specify unless you're actually talking about the differences between the trans and cis experience in which case it's a clarification, like how you don't have to say "white women's rights" unless you're talking specifically about the differences between the rights of white women and women of colour. You're reading this so you're fluent enough at reading to understand how descriptive language is used to explain nuance right? You don't describe yourself as a tall woman or a blonde woman or a middle-aged woman unless you're pointing out the differences between yourself and a short or brunette or younger/older woman, so why are you so convinced you need to constantly point out that you're cis? Who is actually telling you that you need to do this?)

There were a few things she said that I was fully prepared to hear - the litterboxes in classrooms thing was one that jumped out immediately - but one thing she said really had me stuck and the only thing I could say was "what the fuck was the writer of THAT headline smoking I need to know so I can stay WELL the fuck away from it". I was so unprepared.

I swear, this is what she said, word for word, as a response to me explaining the boom in lefthandedness once kids weren't being brutally abused for writing with the wrong hand:

She said

"What do you think of the theory that China is making all the Trans kids by putting a toxin in school supplies as part of a campaign to weaken the West?"

I seriously still have no idea how to respond to this. If you truly believe this our thought patterns are so vastly different I am frankly AMAZED we are capable of communicating AT ALL.

Luke on the Island

I'm not often going to give concessions to people who hate on The Last Jedi but if there's one valid criticism that's bubbled up to the top of the pit of vitriol it's that there's too much of a disconnect between Luke as he was in the orig-trig and the broken down old man that Rey encounters. Particularly there's two ideas that I think are worth examining:

Luke " I'm going to talk my dad, Lord Warcrimes, into seeing reason" Skywalker would not try and kill a kid while he slept because he felt him slipping to the darkside.

Luke " I have to go save my friends even though I know I'm going to lose" Skywalker would never give up on doing good and allow the first order to come to power

With those ideas in mind, how can we get Luke to seek out the first Jedi temple so he can be out of the way for most of episode 7?

The first is easy enough to fix:

Don't have Luke try to kill Kylo in bed. Have him confront his nephew and try to talk sense into him against the backdrop of the new Jedi school. The conversation gets heated, Kylo feels like Luke's been holding him back, Luke is trying to express his concern but teenage Kylo's not feeling it. Then the bad feeling settles in... for both of them. Fear, A warning of lethal intent, Luke's hand reflexively goes to his sabre looking elsewhere for the threat but Kylo misinterprets that as the only confirmation he needs: Luke is jealous of his potential, holding him back on purpose, fearing that he'll become another Vader. Queue heartbreaking fightscene between Luke and his Apprentice, then against the dozen or so other students that side with Kylo over him. Master Skywalker at the height of his power, doing everything he can to pulling his punches against the youths he had hoped to set on the same path as himself. None of them knows it yet but this was all put in place by Snoke, who is able to reach out through the force to manipulate their emotions, he's been planting the seeds of suspicion in Luke's school for years and this is just what he needed. He even purposefully tipped his hand, using Kylo as a decoy for the threat Luke would sense.

As for the Second:

The fight finishes bad for Luke, Kylo reaches out and Breaks something in him, severing his connection to the force (this is in fact Snoke actively blocking his connection, but he wont' discover that for years.) This leaves Luke a shattered man: He lost his nephew just like he lost his father, he was forced to kill a few of his own students, and those that didn't side with Kylo were either cut down defending him or fled, ruining his plans to restore the jedi. The one thing that made him special, a hero, anything more than a farmboy from a nowhere planet has been taken away from him. He has failed, utterly. Snoke silently urges Kylo to kill Luke... but the kid lets him live (partially out of pride, partially because there's still good in him at this point), telling Luke to ruminate on his failure, to live on in shame as a monument to HIM, the chosen of the force, Vader's true heir. (Here we plant the seed of Kylo wanting to be like his grandfather. Partially out of spite, but also out of fear, Vader was the only one who was able to defeat Luke, and turning to the darkside is now Kylo's only hope of protecting himself from the galaxy's most powerful Jedi) In the years that follow Luke Retreats more and more into himself, wishing the force would talk to him, guide him, send him a sign. He leaves the search for Kylo to Han and Leia, and begins salvaging even more scraps of lore from the Jedi order, sacred texts that could perhaps bring him back to first principles and let him connect with the force once again. That's how he ends up on the island, the first place the force first spoke to the precursors of the Jedi order... and he waits for his sign, TRYING to reach like Obi-Wan and Yoda showed him , and he waits, and he waits, and he waits.... and he waits so long he becomes and old man, and he doesn't recognize when the sign arrives in the form of a girl from a nowhere planet with a plea in her eyes and his sword in her hands. The force has found a way to reach him, it just needed to take the long way around.

So there's my fix: Luke is not on the island because he gave up, but because he became convinced that it was the only way he could return to his old self and be the hero he was supposed to be. Luke "failed" in ep5 when he abandoned the Jedi path to try to save his friends, now he's sticking to the Jedi path dogmatically despite the fact that it's led him to a dead end.

I just think that 'animals are living intelligent creatures that have feelings and deserve to be respected' and 'when done properly farming is beneficial to both people and animals and there's nothing wrong with raising and killing animals for food, clothing, and other products' are concepts that very much can and should coexist
