What a beautiful interpretation of Annie’s character. I only read the manga where the anime left off but now I think I should probably read what I missed.

unfaithful representations: annie leonhardt in episode 23 and the anime adaptation at large, and why you really need to read the manga

Earlier today, I watched the raw version of Episode 23. Though I have not been as constant in watching the anime adaptation as I have been in reading the manga, I knew what was coming and felt excited about this episode–partly because Hitch and Marlo, two of my favorite side characters, were going to be animated, but mostly because Annie Leonhardt is one of my favorite characters, and I am especially fascinated by how she interacts with the Shiganshina trio.

After I finished watching, I…was pretty taken aback. Then I became frustrated, even a little angry. Watching the subbed version has done little to alleviate those feelings.

In my view, the anime adaptation’s treatment and depiction of Annie is, from a viewing of Episode 23 alone, highly problematic. When taking into account its treatment of her throughout, however, Episode 23 becomes but the cherry atop an incredibly problematic and reductive representation of a character who, in her original incarnation in the manga, is complex, nuanced, exerts a significant degree of agency in the narrative, and is pivotal to the development of our protagonists, especially Eren, who in turn has an important role in Annie’s character arc.

Through both addition of “anime-only” content and the omission of pertinent dialogue, expressions, and entire scenes, the anime adaptation presents a much different depiction of Annie Leonhardt than the manga does, so much so that I would urge anime-only fans to read the manga for its treatment of her character alone–though there are various reasons why you should consider reading!

Herein I will be reacting to Episode 23 by comparing it to the chapter of the manga it is adapting (Chapter 31: Smile), as well as addressing content that was omitted or changed in earlier episodes. Therefore, if you’re caught up with the anime, there are no spoilers here!

Poor Sasha.

Let us take a moment to understand why Sasha is hungry all the time.

97% of people living in the walls are vegetarians. Connie have mentioned once that meat is a luxury, even more so after the Colossal Titan attacked 5 years ago.

Sasha is a hunter. Her main diet have always had more meat than veges. Even when her people were moving out to another place because meat-produce was running low, Sasha had trouble switching to a more vegetarian diet.

Do you know why???

People who are suddenly deprived of meat and switching to a vegetarian diet are deprived of the nutrients they have received when they eat meat. Imagine that. Sasha is actually MALNOURISHED. That is why she is goddamned hungry all the time. Sasha is STARVING. The vegetarian routine that her friends are so used to is not doing too well on her body. I can only assumed she had a hearty meat meal at her home before departure and the next day all she had was vegetables, soup and bread.

A meat-eater will not be satiated with such a mellow/light meal!!

So before you make fun of her for being a food-lover, think about the psychological underpinnings.

Think about the time when Mikasa pretended to offer the halved loaf of bread only to eat it herself. Think about how heartbreaking it must’ve been to a hungry child.

Really cool!

Ever wondered how are Claymore symbols given to each warrior?

So, in one of the first Claymore chapters, Clare tells Raki that when the warriors are given a rank, they also give them a symbol. A symbol that “represents our name and become our mark” (more or less that’s what she says). But we (or at least me) have never seen the relationship between the names and the symbols. Here’s a hint.

It seems like every symbol is inspired by the first letter or the warrior’s name, but not every letter is “placed” in the symbol the same way. Lets think about our little Clare. You just need to turn the symbol 90º to the left to see a C.

image

That explains too why Deneve is Clare’s symbols upside down. That way you got a D (well, more like the curve but there it is).

image

If you still don’t see it, think about how similar Cassandra and Dietrich symbols are. You can see the sam C - D pattern.

image
image

That works too with Irene, for example, wich symbol was a cross (the vertical stick + her first letter, I)

Simple, isnt it? And some of then you wouldnt even need to turn them to see a letter!

image

omg Is that a circle? Do we know any warrior with a name starting with O? I think there was one, something like Olivia or Odulia or…OPHELIA Thats it! Is there any other symbol with a circle?

Oh! Look!

image

Do you recognize it? Yes, that’s Quennie’s symbols! Her name starts by a circle letter too!

So that’s more or less the point:

image

As you can see, sometimes the first letter is not turned by its axis of symmetry. Instead of that you have that letter at each side of the vertical stick. But we know a warrior that hasnt got a vertical stick (on his symbol, i mean), that's Rigardo! (me? omg) Let’s check it out.

image

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. But i don’t want to hear anymore that looks like a moustache, ok?? What if we turn it 90º to the right and cover the right part?

image

Ok if this is not an R i’m sucking Isley’s (little) dick. I think i have seen that symbol with the vertical stick too.

image

And this one is…Rachel’s symbol! omg omg omg!

And what with our godess, Teresa?

image

Are those two T’s attached to the vertical stick? I THINK THEY ARE!

So here you have some more, harder to see! Remember they are turned 90º to the right!

image

Aren’t they great? One of the symbols i liked the most is Niké’s symbol. But now all i see is two N’s. Don’t you see them too?

image

For some of them, i couldn’t find the letter, like Rosemary or Anastasia. For Miata it was harder, but i have a theory. We could say Miata is the only non-european-kinda-japanese name in the Claymore manga. So, how’s Miata written in japanese? If my knowledge about katakana is correct, it is ミアタ, so the first letter “mi” are three horizontal sticks. Just like her symbol! Look!

image

 Ta-dah!

And well…That’s all folks! I have to say that except the Miata part, i didn’t find this out by myself, I found it at Claymorefan.org, an italian page, and i got 2 pics of there but i wanted to explain it more clearly than it was there. I hope you like it and if you don’t see the letter in any other symbol you can ask me, because since i’ve discovered that i check every symbol out!

Also, sorry for my bad english (and for the long post)! See you, my favorite fandom!
