Sure did love that cut scene, though. 

When you put soap scum (or with the help of what people shaved in 19th century? I have no idea) you can see at least a shape, and it’s enough for not very good shaving, right? And beard is not so comfortable thing when you are all in bandages. So I believe Griffin couldn’t shave only several days before his death, and yes, he died with a beard, but not with a big one.

…and all that things shouldn’t bother me too. .-.
