This is an important piece of writing to me, but what matters is honesty. Please share this, and post your thoughts in the coments. Thank you!
He couldn’t remember much from the egg. He knew it was dark, and warm, and cramped. He barely remembered the first day out of the egg, because there was truly too much to remember. What he did remember was leaving the egg. The first color was a deep, vast blue, as his head poked out of the shell. A blue tinged with whites, and greys. Those were the next two colors he noticed.
The air brushed against his scales, so startlingly cold compared to the warmth of the egg, that he retreated into the shell. That was a mistake, as in his hast, the short horns on his head caught onto the shell, chipping away at the opening, and sending a wide crack down the side of the shell. As he adjusted his body to reaccommodate his head, the crack widened, until his sanctuary split in two, and he lay helpless in the smaller portion of the shell.
He shivered in the wind, as the cold seeped past his scales, into his body as he curled into a ball, a sharp keening whine escaped his mouth. His trembling rocked the shell, and against the stone ground, the noise echoed in the space around him. And these noises reached ears far larger than his own.
After a few more moments of shivering, he felt something new. The wind around him changed, moving steadily from the same direction for a few moments, before stopping all together. Without the wind, his shivering body slowly stopped its trembling, and his cries quieted down, and just as he felt he could unfurl from his ball, the winds changed again. Steady in pattern and strength but broken by intermittent halting. This wind was warm.
He did not think of danger, for he had no concept of it. He only a few things so far. He knew he missed the warm shell. He knew that he didn’t like the cold wind, that made his body tremble, and his scales numb. He knew that the world was startlingly beautiful. And he knew that he liked this warm wind.
As the warm wind touched his body, and the cold left his limbs, he stretched out slowly, bending his hind limbs, then his forelimbs, arching his spine, and stretching the limbs on his back. As he opened his eyes, he prepared for the colors he saw before, those greys and whites scattered across a beautiful, deep blue.
Instead of those colors his eyes saw greens, a wall of greens, varying from light moss, to dark fern, with irregular smatterings of bright crimson all around him. The wall was bunched around him, with several folds, and light passing through the wall above him. The greens were brighter there, and seemed to shift, growing closer, or further in time with the warm winds. Further down the wall, in a place where the folds shaped the wall into something not a wall. This not a wall thing had short horns of green and red at the bottom, and long greyish green horns at the top. That same color spread from the horns to the back of the thing, and out past the folds.
There were several wrinkles, and as he left the shattered shell, he was able to see how long this strange thing was, and he turned and found one long wrinkle stretching from one side to the other. There were two smaller wrinkles under the longer horns. and between the wrinkles, at the tip of the thing, were two holes. While small, they grew and shrank in time with the walls. In time with the warm air.
As he got closer, the warm wind grew stronger, and the air began to hurt his eyes, and he closed them on reflex. Well almost closed them. Instead, his eyes were closed but he could still see. But something was different. The colors from before became tinted. The grey stone he stood on, the shell, the greenish walls all became just a little bluer.
The transition was startling to say the least, and with this fear came the dark. His eyes were closed for real, like when the cold winds made him hiver, and his bones and scales numb. He opened his eyes, and the blue was gone. He turned toward the holes in the part of the wall, the warm wind became stronger, and the blue returned.
He closed his eyes again. He opened them again. He turned to the holes. The blue came back. The cycle began anew.
Growing annoyed with the wind for making the blue return and forgetting that the warm wind was better than the cold wind, he snarled, looked through the blue, reached out with his forelimb, and plugged up the nearest hole.
The wind stopped for a moment, then came out stronger as the wrinkles in the not wall twitched. He blinked at the shifting wrinkles and even without the blue, they continued to shift. And then the wrinkles slowly drifted open.
A series of greens and greys met his own, with a slightly slitted appearance. There were a few, tiny flecks of gold and silver in the iris. As he continued to stare into those eyes, a thin green film covered the eye, before retreating. Then the not wall slowly rose, till it was just above where his head was, and his forelimb fell away.
Trembling despite the warmth, he staggered backwards, tripping lightly over the remnants of his shell. Slowly the walls fell away, and the beautiful blue from before, now empty of white, and pale orange to one half of it. They stood at the edge of a cave, in a cliffside, surrounded by an endless forest.
The walls of the cave were a solid black, and the cold winds from before brought the smell of ashes and long cold cooked flesh. Around the entrance to the cave were the charred corpses f strange creatures, some with shiny thing on or around them, some completely blackened, or even in pieces. Those ones had a red, similar to the small patches n the one before him, smeared on the grey rock around them. Near the bodies were the shells.
Broken and crushed things, of many colors, some green, some red, some even white and black. There was even a blue one. He didn’t know what that meant, but he saw the large one look with him to those shells, and he sensed a sadness, and a fury at the corpses. The large one looked at him, and then all he felt was love, and protection.
Looking up at this face before him, he discovered two things
One, this was the face of his mother.
And two, he was a Dragon.
