Favorite Bits Of The Cast Interviews In The LOTR Special Features:
favorite bits of the cast interviews in the LOTR special features:
Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen all taking the piss out of Orlando Bloom for going on about a cracked rib too much, while Orlando Bloom desperately tries to wriggle out of talking about it (special mention to Elijah Woodâs âoh it hurts, babes, and I canât ride the horse, babesâ and Viggo Mortensenâs âthey can be very fragile, elves, especially theâŠMirkwood strainâŠâ)
Ian McKellen commenting that âthey never did find any suitable underwear for GandalfâŠâ
Dominic Monaghan going on and on about how Viggo Mortensen apparently had a crush on one of the Rohirrim extras (who like a lot of the Rohirrim extras was a woman in a fake beard) while Vigoo Mortensen just mutters âone could perhaps say something about Mr. MonaghanâsâŠproclivitiesâŠâ
Dominic Monaghanâs imitation of John Rhys-Davies ordering food at a restaurant for the whole cast. âYou have partridge? BRING THE PARTRIDGE!â
John Rhys-Davies talking about an incident with the Lothlorian boats and saying âif an elf and a dwarf are in a boatâŠandâŠthe boat goes underâŠlet us say that the blame was not placed on the elfâ while Orlando Bloom splutters âheâs a big guy, man!âÂ
Elijah Wood talking about how the hobbit actors shared a trailer with Ian McKellen and sometimes they would hear inarticulate bellows of protest from his side when they played loud music in the mornings
Viggo Mortensen talking about how, while filming with those same boats, Kirin Shaw (Elijah Woodâs scale double) started telling him âif the boat tips overâŠsave yourselfâŠI canât swim.âÂ
Elijah Wood describing how Sean Astin would try to direct the helicopters to land while they were on location, while the other three hobbits were screwing around and throwing pinecones at each other
Christopher Lee recounting how he had so much trouble going up some steps in Orthanc with his long robe that he stopped in the middle of the scene and said, âI cannot get up these goddamn steps, Peter.âÂ
Viggo Mortensen mentioning that he left a weekend rehearsal and went walking down the street still swinging his sword around, and promptly got the cops called on him

someone stop me from writing a 10-15 page essay mla format with citations about Aragorn's character arc in LotR. Yes yes yes we know frodo and Sam are the real heroes, smallest and strongest, etc.
But moment of appreciation for my guy Aragorn who is literally just some dude who would much rather lie in ditches and hang out with horses than be recognized for a single accomplishment ever... Who loses literally everything to become king.
Yeah, loses. You heard me.
It's been a minute since I read the books but I just finished watching the extended trilogy again, and idk why it's never stood out to me so plainly that this is a tragedy in many respects for Aragorn. He loses his anonymity, his ranger identity, and Eowyn. He has turned down the path to kingship over and over, and yet it continues to be thrust on him. He tries to sends Arwen to safety and immortality -- but she chooses to stay in middle earth for him anyway. (Yes, he loves her, and because of that, she will die.)
Part of this is I'm sure due to how Viggo played these scenes, but every moment Aragorn has on screen after accepting Anduriel is drenched in grief. He doesn't want this.
"I gave hope to men" "I keep no hope for myself." This isn't Aragorn saying he has no hope for the war, it's him saying that he chooses to serve the needs of the people over his own needs. Gondor needs a king. To do that thing, Aragorn the ranger must die. He cannot continue to have his own needs and desires and hopes. He chooses to serve.
"it is but a shadow and a dream that you love" this could be read as Aragorn telling Eowyn you don't really know me bitch... But Viggo is so heartbroken and so sincere in the delivery here, and he's spent so much time with her prior to this moment, voluntarily, that I read this as regretful. Aragorn the ranger would have loved Eowyn. Aragorn the king cannot.
Now you hardcore Aragorn x Arwen shippers may be going HOLD THE PHONE. But please bear with me. By marrying Arwen, Aragorn dooms her to a mortal life and death. He loves her. He doesn't want that for her, no matter how much he likes her. So that choice is tinged with sadness for him as much as her. It's hurt he causes the woman he loves. When he greets her at minas tirith in the coronation scene, it is with wonder and sadness as much as joy.
a lot of Aragorn's public "king" actions are cosplaying the kings of old. This isn't the ranger we know. Who is this guy? He introduces himself as heir of elendiel to Sauron in the palantir. His song at his coronation is quoting from the canonically famous lines of one of the first numenorian kings, and translates roughly to, "out of the great sea I am come and here I shall abide I and my heirs unto the ending of the world". (Or something like that). In the books he even takes up a different name: Elessar.
don't get me started on the costume design and how the amount of RED in his wardrobe directly correlates with how much leadership he is willing to accept!
Anyway this is all off the top of my head without checking a single source but yeah. My man is complex and devastatingly human and we don't talk about it enough.
side eyes a college professor who reduced Aragorn to "a Christ figure in the narrative" in favor of discussing the hobbits
ARAGORN THE RANGER HAS TO LOSE EVERYTHING HE'S EVER CARED ABOUT FOR ELESSAR TO TAKE THE THRONE AND THAT'S FUCKIN SAD. It's a choice he makes for the good of everyone else, when he wants the opposite.
screams into a paper bag
There are about a million reasons why I love Faramir and Ăowynâs relationship and why I think itâs one of the most romantic relationships that Tolkien wrote, but do you want to know what isnât talked about enough?
âDo not scorn pity that is the gift of a gentle heart, Ăowyn! But I do not offer you my pity. For you are a lady high and valiant and have yourself won renown that shall not be forgotten; and you are a lady beautiful, I deem, beyond even the words of the Elven-tongue to tell. And I love you. Once I pitied your sorrow. But now, were you sorrowless, without fear or any lack, were you the blissful Queen of Gondor, still I would love you. Ăowyn, do you not love me?â
A lot has already been said about Faramirâs confession that he would still love her if she were the Queen of Gondorâand rightly so, because heâs basically saying heâs so hopelessly in love that nothing could ever change his feelingsâbut what REALLY does it for me, even more than that, is Faramir saying that she is VALIANT. He admires her bravery and her accomplishments in battle, and he says she has won RENOWN. Yes!!! YES!!!!!!!!!
Look, part of the reason Ăowyn doesnât want pity is that she doesnât want to be looked down upon, and thatâs what she associates with being pitied. But this isnât really about another personâs pityâthis is about how Ăowyn sees herself. All her life, sheâs been held back from participating in battle and from doing great deeds. In her conversation with Aragorn at Edoras, in one of my favorite scenes in the book, she delivers these searing lines: âAll your words are but to say: you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear either pain or death.â Aragorn asks, âWhat do you fear, lady?â And Ăowyn replies: âA cage. To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.â
But at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, she DOES great deeds! She and Merry slay the Witch-king of Angmar, Sauronâs MOST POWERFUL SERVANT. When you think about the power of fear that the NazgĂ»l had over most mortals, itâs absolutely astounding how brave this was for them to do. But even afterwards, Ăowyn doesnât appear to know the value of what sheâs done. Part of this may be her grief for ThĂ©oden, and part of it may be the Black Breath, but the point is she doesnât know what she has achieved. Because in the Houses of Healing, she says to Faramir, âI wish to ride to war like my brother Ăomer, or better like ThĂ©oden the king, for he died and has both honour and peace.â Ăowyn still does not believe she has won honorâand so she does not have peace.
To this Faramir says, âIt is too late, lady, to follow the Captains, even if you had the strength. But death in battle may come to us all yet, willing or unwilling. You will be better prepared to face it in your own manner, if while there is still time you do as the Healer commanded. You and I, we must endure with patience the hours of waiting.â Itâs important that Faramir doesnât tell her sheâs wrong for wanting to go to battle, only that she must heal, and battle may still come for them yetâand he says WE must wait. Ăowyn didnât want to be left behind to wait for the men to return, but with her and Faramir both waiting, it no longer has that meaning.
This is all important context for the confession. Because days later, in the most romantic conversation of all time, Faramir says these magic words: âFor you are a lady high and valiant and have yourself won renown that shall not be forgotten.â LISTEN TO ME, IT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT HE SAYS THIS! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT ĂOWYN NEEDED TO HEAR. Itâs the FIRST THING HE SAYS IN THE SPEECH! Before he says sheâs beautiful, before he says he loves her, he tells her she is valiant.
This is it. This is why this scene is peak romance to me. Because Ăowyn desired to do great deeds and to win honor in battle, and she actually HAS DONE SO, but she doesnât know it. And Faramir understands her, and not only that, he ADMIRES HER! âFor you are a lady high and valiant and have yourself won renown that shall not be forgotten.â I donât know about you, but that line ALONE would make me fall in love.
I want to make people see how much has been taken away from them.
Did you know that there are dozens of species of fireflies, and some of them light up with a blue glow? Did you know about the moths? There are thousands of them, bright pink and raspberry orange and checkerboard and emerald. They are called things like Black-Etched Prominent, Purple Fairy, Pink-Legged Tiger, Small Mossy Glyph and Black-Bordered Lemon.
Did you know that there are moths that feed on lichens? Did you know about the blue and green bees? The rainbow-colored dogbane beetles? Your streams are supposed to teem with newts, salamanders, crawdads, frogs, and fishes. I want to take you by the hand and show you an animal you've never seen before, and say, "This exists! It's real! It's alive!"
There are secret wildflowers that no website will show you and that no list entitled "native species to attract butterflies!" will name. Every day I'm at work I see a new plant I didn't know existed.
The purple coneflowers and prairie blazing star are a tidepool, a puddle, and there is an ocean out there. There are wildflowers that only grow in a few specific counties in a single state in the United States, there are plants that are evolved specifically to live underneath the drip line of a dolomite cliff or on the border of a glade of exposed limestone bedrock. Did you know that different species of moss grow on the sides of a boulder vs. on top of it?
There are obscure trees you might have never seenâSourwood, Yellowwood, Overcup Oak, Ninebark, Mountain Stewartia, Striped Maple, American Hophornbeam, Rusty Blackhaw, Kentucky Coffeetree. There are edible fruits you've never even heard of.
And it is so scary and sad that so many people live and work in environments where most of these wondrous living things have been locally extirpated.
There are vast tracts of suburb and town and city and barren pasture where a person could plausibly never learn of the existence of the vast majority of their native plants and animals, where a person might never imagine just how many there are, because they've only ever been exposed to the tiny handful of living things that can survive in a suburb and they have no reason to extrapolate that there are ten thousand more that no one is talking about.
It's like being a fish that has lived its whole life in a bucket, with no way of imagining the ocean. The insects in your field guide are a fraction of those that exist, of all the native plants to your area only a handful can be bought in a nursery.
Welcome to the Earth! It's beautiful! It's full of life! More things are real and beautiful and alive than a single person could imagine!!!
