During this sequence thatâs supposed to feel victorious and like, âyeah things arenât perfect, but the good guys won today!â Merlin watches Guinevere and Arthur hug intimately and you know what? He looks sad.
He looks like he wishes he could touch Arthur so freely and affectionately. He looks like heâs desperate to be seen for everything he is and everything heâs done for him. He looks like heâs accepting heâll never be with Arthur like that and itâs breaking his heart.
That man is deeply in love and he canât do anything about it. He is happy for them because he just wants them to be happy, but that doesnât mean it doesnât feel like a dagger in his heart.
It reminds me of that quote from Sherlock, âyou look sad when you think he canât see youâ

What is lotrweek?
Lotrweek is a week-long event to celebrate The Lord of the Rings here on Tumblr. It takes place on 16th-22nd September 2024.
How do I take part?
Each day of the week has a prompt. Create an original work (e.g. gifset, fanart, fanfic) inspired by a prompt, then post it to Tumblr! Where the prompt has multiple parts to it, you can choose which part(s) you want to focus on â how you respond to a prompt is comletely up to you. The prompts are deliberately vague and open so that they can work for gifs, art, fics, etc.
For example, for âhistories and legaciesâ, you could make a gifset of Moria, or art of the similarities/differences between Luthien and Arwen, or a fic about Aragorn and the Dunedain before the War of the Ring.
Will you reblog my works?
Yes! Tag your works with #lotrweek so they can be reblogged here, and follow @lotrweek for updates on the event and to see everyone elseâs works. If thereâs anything nsfw or that may need a warning, make sure to do this responsibly and put said parts under a read-more.
How much can I participate?
As much or as little as youâd like! You can take part just once or every day (or even multiple times a day if youâre feeling particularly hasty). Itâs up to you â just make sure youâre enjoying it!
Can I create any type of work?
Yes! Gifs, graphics, fanart, fanfic, video edits, meta â all are welcome, as long as itâs your own original work.
Does my work have to be based on the LOTR films?
Any works based on LOTR (book or film) are welcome.
Can I include other Tolkien books/adaptations?
You can, but LOTR should be the focus. So, for example, a gifset of just The Hobbit films wouldnât work, but a gifset including shots from both The Hobbit and LOTR (e.g. to draw parallels between characters/events) would work great!

Listen, I know everyone and their mother has drawn this screengrab, but the thing I love most about it is the flash of fear on Boromir's face. It's so quick but so potent--he KNOWS he can't protect Merry and Pippin on his own.
