You M.m

It was Friday evening and you decided to go to the library for a bit of last minute studying. Truthfully, you procrastinated quite a bit, but you felt you did well under pressure, which you thought was fitting for being in law school.

You always took interest in law and wanted to help your community. It was something you thought you could do well, but part of you felt like you had to do it since your parents wanted you to be something, and they were willing to pay, so you couldn’t turn down a slick opportunity.

However, there was another reason for going to the library. You had a bit of a crush on a particular guy who just made your heart flutter with admiration. You’ve only talked to him once, and that was when he was exiting out of your next class and you accidentally bumped into him. He exchanged an “Oh-sorry!” catching your arm to make sure you didn’t fall, you replied telling him it was your fault and he smiled, leaving with his friend.

You cursed yourself because you couldn’t believe how inattentive you were to bump into a blind guy. But the smile he gave you just melted you. It was a small interaction, but the way he made sure you were okay despite it being your fault, it made you admire his attention to care for others.

Ever since then you remembered him, and noticed he’d go to the library with his friend most of the week to study or hang out for a bit. You did the same, but now it was a lot more bearable when you had eye candy.

You knew his name was Matt and his friend's name was Foggy, you weren’t trying to eavesdrop, but Foggy made it easy for you to hear their conversations, thus their names slipping from their lips. You’d often hear Matt trying to shush him as he was sure others were around, and he was right, you were.

It was about half an hour into your study when you noticed the sound of a cane chirping at the floor. He was here, but alone? You turn in the direction of the sound and to your suspecting guess, Foggy wasn’t with him. It was weird, they were always together, and Foggy would usually announce the two of them before getting close enough to the study area.

You were the only two in that area besides a girl packing up to leave, you spot him through your peripheral, taking a seat at the desk next to you. You don’t know why you felt nervous, but for some reason you felt like he could hear your heartbeat.

You felt stupid having a crush on him, he didn’t even know you and here you were locking your gaze on someone who couldn’t even see you.

-

It was about another hour after he got there before you started to call it quits. It was getting super late and you had to make sure you were ready so your roommate could pick you up.

You were packing your things when you heard a whispered “Shit!” You looked over and realize Matt was trying to find his pen. He dropped it and it rolled close to the desk you were at. You gave a low chuckle as you noticed he was trying to find it with his feet.

“Uh, I think this might be yours,” you smile, grabbing the pen and gently placing the metal into his hand.

“Oh- ha,” he laughs, turning somewhat into your direction, “uh, thanks. ‘appreciate it.” He gave a pretty grin. Although his dark glasses were sheltering his alluring eyes, you could see the edge of them and noticed the radiant color. You also couldn’t help but notice the slight hold he gave your hand while retrieving his pen. You assured yourself you were thinking too much into this thought, so you bid him a cheery, “Good night.”

You made your way out of the library, and decided to wait for your roommate at the steps. Although it was dark, there were still quite a few people walking to and from classes and dorms, occasionally people coming out of the library. It was a beautiful night, and you decided to reflect on your thoughts and the brief interaction you had with Matt. It was kind of funny how worked up and flustered you got around him when you barely knew him, but that’s what a crush was, nothing to be taken seriously. How could anything realistically come out of this.

You looked up at the sky, the stars hazy and air polluted with the resonance of traffic and rocks kicking at the sidewalks. The breeze was cool and tender, allowing itself to carry the smell of pollen through your senses. It was nice and calming.

“Hey, do you mind if I wait here?” You were so focused on your thoughts you didn’t even hear a cane hitting the pavement, causing you to give a slight jump at his warm voice.

“Shit-You scared me,” you say low looking just behind you at the top of the stairs.

“Sorry, I thought you might’ve heard that loud door opening behind you,” he smiles slightly gesturing to the door with the bottom of his cane.

You give an embarrassed laugh, trying to shake away the awkwardness you had. You were so deep in thought about what just occurred you didn’t even answer him, making your cheeks flare up by his proceeding comment.

“Sooo… is that okay? I didn’t mean to startle you, trust me I’m a bit more slicker than that,” he states, clearing his throat as if he was just as embarrassed.

“Oh, no- yeah, yeah. Sorry, I just- you’re good. Do you need help finding the steps to sit?” You offer to stand up, ready to assist him.

“Sure, that’d be great. Thanks.” He holds out his hand, and of course, like an idiot you give him your hand. He chuckles at this motion, “your arm’s fine.”

“Fuck, I’m- I’m sorry, I didn’t know,” you offer your arm, rolling your eyes at yourself as he accepts this gesture.

“You’re good, it can happen,” he tilts his head thinking about it. You bring him down to the steps, finding a comfortable in between to sit. You turn to him, watching as he folds his cane up.

“Has it ever happened?” You give a hopeful question. You started to notice you weren’t as jittery being around him. You weren’t sure if it was the continuous embarrassment or because you thought you actually were making progress.

“Uh…” he starts, scrunching his nose, “actually it hasn’t.”

“Jesus, that’s so embarrassing,” bringing your hands up to your face, you make a low groan in frustration.

“Well, I mean I did say ‘it can happen’ and we’ll look- it happened,” facing towards you, he gives you a gentle grin.

“It’s still embarrassing,” you shake your head.

“Don’t be,” he states plainly, “there’s a first time for everything right?” He gives your shoulder a compassionate nudge.

You finally turn to him. He’s facing ahead, hands in lap, his lips curling into sweet crescent curve. It’s charming.

“I didn’t even give you my name yet, I would say that’s slightly more embarrassing,” his eyebrows raise, “Matt.” He states, gesturing a handshake, “Oh no. It’s okay this time. You’re supposed to grab my hand,” he jokes.

“Ha. Ha,” you mock, scoffing. Lacing your hand between his, you give him your name. You observe how soft his hands are, warming your palms in that brief moment.

“That’s a pretty name,” he almost says under his breath, and you catch it just as quickly as he changes the subject, “So uh- waiting for someone?”

Smiling, you answer, clearing your throat, “Yeah. Just waiting for my roommate, she’s picking me up. You?” You say curiously.

“Same. He dropped me off. Had some prior commitment apparently.” He chuckles at the thought.

You nod, expecting him for some reason to see. At this moment it is just you two. There’s silence, but it's gratifying and calm, there was no pressure to continue a conversation.

The breeze was starting to slow, leaving just bits of your hair to lift. The number of people walking through campus started to dwindle, but the sound of cars remained prominent.

You felt a vibrate in your lap, your phone screen lighting up, “Oh I gotta go, my roommate’s here.” You turn to him. You furrow your brows worriedly, you didn’t want to leave him alone this late at night, “Why don’t you come with me, we can drop you off wherever you need to go.” you say hopeful.

“Oh no it’s okay, I can wait here. Foggy should be here in a bit,” He states calmly, but he seems to pick up on your instability of the situation, “Seriously! No need to worry about me, I got a good weapon if I need it,” he smiles in your direction, lifting up his cane to you.

“You sure?” Still uneasy, you get ready to text your roommate to wait until his ride gets there, but he slips his hand over yours gently, seemingly to stop you.

“I’m sure. I’m a big boy, I promise.” he grips your hand a bit firmer, “you should go, I don’t think your roommate would be too happy waiting for long,” he laughs.

You hum in approval. Starting to stand, you grab your bag, you glance at him, to make sure he fine, but he seems to understand your fear, he nods for you to go, and you start to walk down to the base of the stairs.

“I’ll make sure I won’t have a ride next time,” he calls out.

You look back to him, laughing to yourself, “Yeah, please do,” you start to walk, “Good night, Matt. Be safe.” You say authoritatively, but playful.

“Of course, sweetheart.”
