AO3 confirmed on twitter that the outage is due to a cyber attack where someone who I guess had some free time today decided to intentionally overwhelm their servers with so many silly random requests that it's keeping the servers from responding properly. They also confirmed that no data has been compromised.

Real Chaotic Neutral move to be attacking a fanfic website in a way that's otherwise pretty aggressively benign. Life is literally finite, we only have so much time on earth and the jonah hill to die on just cannot be taking down AO3 without even trying to make a grab for data. Like imma need to see a manifesto quick quick because I have questions.
