Oh. O h . That, that might actually explain something that's been bothering me for a while now.

Ok so something that I just could not come up with any explanation for in regards to Rose was why the fricker-snaps did he treat Eternatus so horribly. Everything we learn about Rose points to him caring deeply for all of the inhabitants of Galar, both human and pokemon. Heck, he's the one who gives us the "pokemon are our friends, partners, and family!" spiel at the start of the game. So it makes zero sense whatsoever for him to suddenly pull a 180° and abuse eternatus for an energy source.

...But what if Rose didn't know eternatus was alive at first?

My assumption had been that eternatus upon reforming would always look vaguely like a living thing. But if at first it was only the glowing core, well that's a completely different story.

Our closest comparison for piecing a pokemon back together is zygard. A zygard cell has a cute face which makes it pretty obvious that it's a living thing. On the other hand, there is nothing about wishing stars and eternatus' core that denotes that they are a living being. And Rose wouldn't have gotten a warning from the old legends about eternatus being alive as they do not at any point hint that the darkest day was a living pokemon.

And sure there are some rock types that at first glance don't particularly have any living characteristics, but I can't think of any that doesn't at least have a vague caricature of a face that allows the human psyche to pack bond with the 'mon like they're Pluto.

But as stated above, eternatus' core and the wishing stars don't have any characteristics that suggest that they are alive. They look like just a bunch of rocks and a glowing ball of energy. They can't move on their own either. Rose wouldn't have any reason to think that this was a living pokemon.

And what if it took a lot of time and wishing stars for eternatus' core to start transforming into a recognizably living being? And even longer for it to start responding to its environment?

Maybe by the time Rose could realize that something was horribly wrong, he would feel he was in too deep to turn back.

... I always thought that the shadows over Rose's eyes made him look emotionally tired. I also feel like they get more accentuated as the story progresses. Maybe the shadows over his eyes represent his growing horror and guilt.

…Wait. Wait a fucking minute.

Why am I asking “how did Rose even find Eternatus?” when I should be asking “HOW THE FUCK DID HE SMUGGLE THAT GIGANTIC SON OF A BITCH INTO THE HAMMERLOCKE POWER PLANT WITHOUT ANYONE NOTICING?”

Wait. Wait A Fucking Minute.

SIXTY-FIVE FEET

I mean THAT’S FUCKING HUGE

So Oleana is canonically 5 ft 11 in her heels, right? Let’s do a height comparison, if we pretend Eternatus can stand like a humanoid for a moment.

Wait. Wait A Fucking Minute.

I have two ideas on this:

One possibility is that Rose had been collecting a large amount of wishing stars in hopes of running experiments on them. It was known that wishing stars emit energy, so maybe he was trying to see if there was a way to use them as a renewable energy source. Eventually Rose would have accidentally stockpiled enough of what are literally pieces of eternatus' body for it to reconstruct itself. One moment it's a pile of wishing stars, the next they're glowing and clumping together untill poof: you now have one realy sickly looking god.

Another possibility focuses on how Rose owns the galar mines. If I understood the lore correctly, then the glowing gems all over the caves are used for fuel. Not only that, but considering how much time Bede spends hunting for wishing stars in the mines its more than likely there are a lot of them down there. Maybe while excavating a new tunnel the miners open up a sealed cavern with a hibernating Eternatus within. It would probably look similar to the cocoons of yeveltal and Xerneas. Something like that would get reported, so Rose would come to investigate.

Here’s a question I don’t think I’ve seen any theories on yet - just how did Rose even find Eternatus in the first place?

So I've been studying eternatus' anatomy and realized a few things:

1) the clear walls between the ribs are definitely an elastic membrane, would probably feel a bit like latex to the touch. (Realized this bc the membrane isn't flat like it would be if it was crystalline, it is concave like fabric pulled over a frame). This brings up a question about the membrane connecting its horns. I always thought they were the same.... tissue? substance? But the horn membrane looks more rigid.

2) there are freaking divots in its spine???? How the heck haven't I noticed that before?

3) the way its back spikes line up when it's moving makes me think it used to have a membrane connecting them, a little similar to spinosaurus.

4) the way it moves reminds me of aquatic mammals... now I have the image of eternatus with fins, flippers, and a whale tail...

5) eternatus is far more heavily based off of eastern long dragons than western dragons. This brings the long whip like structures on its shoulders further into question... just what are they?

6) eternatus' back legs actually make slightly more sense knowing that it is an eastern dragon, some traditional art of long dragons have similar hind legs.

7) those strange whip like structures on eternatus' shoulders... I still don't know what they are. When I first saw eternatus I thought that they were wings. But after watching eternatus move in camp I'm not so sure. They don't move like wings would, they act more like tendrils.

Also the way it moves its head makes it look like it's super curious and that's frigging adorable.
