It was late when Hiccup finally made it through the front door of your home. When the door shut behind him, he sighed deeply and shrugged off his fur cloak so that he could hang it on a chair in front of the fire. You could barely tell the cloak was brown—the snowstorm outside was raging, and Hiccup’s cloak was covered in tiny snowballs.

“Rough day?” you questioned sarcastically, leaning against the doorframe leading into your bedroom.

Hiccup kicked off his boot and sat it upright beside his cloak. “Not at all.”

His tone was flat, and you chuckled. Of course, it had been a bad day. Even with some of the dragons returning from the Hidden World, the heavy snow had been relentless over the past few days, and it was slowing Berk’s ability to function. The wind kept blowing out Gobber’s forge. Some of the food supply had frozen solid. And, naturally, with nearly four and a half feet of snow on the ground, getting around was a nightmare.

Hiccup had been left to deal with the issues. He was the chief, after all. You could tell he truly enjoyed the responsibility—he was kind, and fair, and brilliant, and always quick to come up with an answer for any situation. But you could tell this storm was testing him. He had bags under his eyes, and he developed a slight hand twitch when he had been sitting for too long. You hadn’t seen him so stressed out since the night before your wedding.
