Why? because you’d do anything for him.

Jake, the boy who stood up for you when a kid was picking on you when you were 8.

Jake, the boy who you used to raid the pantry with and eat all the candy until you got yourselves sick when you were 11.

Jake, the boy who went with you to your first school dance because he claimed other girls had cooties when you were 14.

Jake, the boy who comforted you during your first heartbreak when you were 16.

Jake, the boy who is your best friend and forever will be.

So why do you feel all fuzzy inside when he holds your hand in the hallway?

Why do you want it all to be real when you start feeling butterflies whenever you’re around him?

But then you feel a pang in your heart when he tells you that he’s finally scored a date with his crush.

You feel your heart stinging when you watch them across the street through the window of the café as he’s laughing with someone else.

That someone who isn’t you, that someone who will never be you.

Feeling defeated you push your feelings aside. Why? because he’s your best friend after all
