A Palestinian-American Nurse Was Fired By A New York City Hospital After She Referred To Israels Genocide

A Palestinian-American nurse was fired by a New York City hospital after she referred to Israel’s genocide in Gaza during a speech accepting an award.

Labor and delivery nurse Hesen Jabr was being honored by NYU Langone Health for her compassion in caring for mothers who had lost babies when she drew a link between her work and the suffering of mothers in Gaza.

“It pains me to see the women from my country going through unimaginable losses themselves during the current genocide in Gaza,” Jabr said. “This award is deeply personal to me for those reasons.”

She arrived at work on May 22 for her first shift back after receiving the award when she was summoned to a meeting with the hospital’s president and vice president of nursing “to discuss how I ‘put others at risk’ and ‘ruined the ceremony’ and ‘offended people’ because a small part of my speech was a tribute towards the grieving mothers in my country.”

After working most of her shift she was “dragged once again to an office” where she was read her termination letter and then escorted out of the building by a security officer.

About the lesser evil, it only does this lesser evil act to get your support, which it needs. That means you have bargaining power. Sometimes it may be preferable to withhold your support or even to support the greater evil until the lesser evil is forced to abide by your demands.

By Existing As A Citizen In And Paying Taxes To The Imperial Core, We Automatically Hold Complicity In

By existing as a citizen in and paying taxes to the imperial core, we automatically hold complicity in imperialist oppression because we are literally footing the bill for it. That is just the basic nature of being born to privilege in systems of oppression in general. We can be disadvantaged and marginalized in every single other consideration and we still have to understand and cope with this, and ensure we leverage it as effectively as possible.

Voting abstinence/sabotage does not absolve us of our responsibility to do everything in our power to lessen harm, but it DOES show that when our personal morals aren't satisfied, we retreat into (imperialist, this time) privilege to 'wash our hands' of the situation and declare it's not our fault and it's not our problem.

I see so many posts of Palestinian art and the Palestinian flag get reblogged far more than the actual fundraisers and it has me concerned.

Please, artists of tumblr who want to support Palestine, help us with their gofundmes by linking them with your art. It would help spread them out so much more so they can be seen by possible donors. I have seen some artists do this, and it has been very effective. This is where art has power.

🌸Here are some fundraisers you can help support.

Given your "grand leader" comment I'm not sure you got what I'm advocating for right. I'm certainly not advocating for unelected officials, I'm advocating for no (or only where strictly necessary) officials. Instead of electing (presumably knowledgeable) officials who vote on legislation or sign executive orders, the people vote on legislation and executive orders directly, hopefully taking into account the proposals of (presumably knowledgeable) commentators. The important difference is this is a minimal-trust system, which avoids putting power in the hands of people who won't answer to you for years (as you said yourself, socdems aren't all that socialist when actually in government) (technically permanent elections or widespread enough revolutionary sentiment would achieve a lot of the same goal).

This absolutely doesn't mean you have to know everyone or come to an agreement on everything, just as you don't currently do so when electing officials. You just vote on whether you want to increase funding to hospitals (probably yes), or military aid to genocidal foreign powers (probably no), or you might do some kind of ranked choice vote to decide on a screw shape to standardise. Are most people qualified to make an informed decision on their own concerning that last one especially? Probably not. Can they consult opinions of experts and vote accordingly without handing anyone the right to screw them over? I think so.
