Dead Poets Week- Neil Perry
Together Once More
Neil seized the day. He acted in the play, knowing the punishment would be severe. Once he arrived at his house, his father yelled at him. His words were more bitter than the winter wind, a blizzard approaching rather soon. Neil's mother stayed in the corner, her tears not cooperating.
After Neil heard about how terrible the arts were for him, Mr. Perry laid down the punishment. Neil was to attend yet another set of summer school classes. His father assured him that there'd be no rest for him, and his grades were to be monitored at all times.
Neil made his way to his room, looking at his mother and softly smiling at her, knowing she needed it. He went to bed, rather torn. He loved the play, it was the most exhilarating thing he'd ever done, but more summer school made the day a little less exciting.
The following day, Neil went to school and received a standing ovation in Mr. Keating's class for a stellar performance. A special Dead Poets meeting was held that night in honor of Neil. Everyone contributed to a poem that outlined how he was a natural at acting.
Eventually, Neil having to attend summer school was brought up. The boys sighed in unison, imagining Mr. Perry yelling at the boy. They told Neil how much they sympathized with him, and promised to make Neil's time before then as fun as possible.
It was now two weeks before school concluded, and summer school started. Neil and Todd were in their dorm room, one reading a play, the other, writing one.
"Neil, I have something to tell you."
"Go ahead Todd!"
"I'm doing summer school."
"Really? May I ask why?"
"Well, my parents want me to be like Jeff, and I don't have his brains yet, and frankly I'd be stuck at home for the entire summer. At summer school though, I'd get to see you."
Todd's voice slowly became quieter, unsure if Neil's response was going to be positive.
"This is WONDERFUL Todd! We can be partners in every class! We'd have most of the school to ourselves, oh wow! This is PERFECT!"
Todd chuckled at Neil's excitement, and was thankful of this reaction.
During the days leading up to summer school, Neil made plans with Todd to make the most of their summer. Neil thought they could sneak into the cave, go for a swim in the river, and have picnics so Todd could write.
Mr. Perry visited the school frequently during this time, peering over Neil's shoulder. To Neil's dismay, he got an 80% on a chemistry test. Mr. Perry was furious with Neil, especially since he took chemistry last summer. This worried Todd, and made him reject Neil's risky plans.
"Todd, come on! If we do it right, we will be just fine! It'll all be worth it."
"I don't want you to get in trouble okay? I can't see you get hurt again"
"Todd, I'll be fine. You don't have to watch out for me, I already have someone surveilling me at all times."
"No."
"What do you mean, no?"
"No." Todd replied with a smirk. He turned the tables on Neil, and ran out the dorm room with Neil's chemistry test.
"Todd, give that back!" Neil yelled while laughing. He was having the time of his life with Todd.
Once the poets had a farewell meeting in the cave, Neil and Todd made their way to their home for a couple more months. Tired, they exchanged goodnights, and Neil threw in a "sweet dreams" for Todd.
The next morning was the first day of summer school. Half of the teachers were gone, and had cheered when they left. Only 25 other students were to attend summer school. Neil knew them all, he loved chatting with every single one.
While he caught up with them, Todd stood from afar, staring at Neil. He wondered how Neil was able to keep the other person engaged in the conversation. He remembered when Neil was kind to him on his birthday. He was the first person to make him smile on one of his birthdays, and not cry because of the neglect he received from his family.
Neil was now done socializing with everyone, and wanted to talk to a certain boy about summer school. Since he had attended it the previous year, he knew what was to be expected.
Looking at Todd, Neil smiled and made his way to the anxious boy. Neil hadn't experienced much anxiety before, and was stumped on how to comfort Todd.
"Hey Todd, you ready for chemistry? We can be lab partners!" Neil spoke softly.
"Yeah, that sounds good." Todd replied, his tone laced with nervousness.
A routine formed over the next few weeks of summer, one that included making the most of it with each other. Neil was able to comfort Todd when doing new things. He was delighted to see Todd smiling, and felt like they were a match made in heaven.
After climbing trees, Neil made his way back to Welton with Todd close by. For once, Neil felt anxious. He hated this unfamiliar feeling, and sympathized with Todd. Neil's hands began to shake, and he blinked his eyes faster. Neil was alone with the boy, under the moonlight, and thought he was, beautiful.
Neil felt like his very thoughts would be punished, for it was a sin to think this way. But, Neil couldn't stop gazing at the boy, and they were just far enough from the school to not be seen. Neil couldn't go through with it, not here, and not then. He wasn't ready for it, and was sure that Todd would be frightened out of his mind if it went through. Neil was going to wait until they didn't have to hide anymore.
He also thought that if he did it once, he wouldn't be able to stop doing it. Todd's lips were soft, he knew just by looking at them. Neil would have to be patient.
If Charlie were there, he'd yell,
"JUST KISS ALREADY!!!"
Author's Note:
I was inspired to write this by reading posts on here that were about alternate endings to the DPS movie. I thought of a lesser but still big punishment Neil would get for performing in the play, and came up with this. I wanted to keep the part of the original DPS storyline where Neil performs in the play because of its' significance. I incorporated an alternate version of the "no" scene because I love the original, and wanted to create my own.
