I think one of the reasons why Crowley fell in love with Aziraphale is that Aziraphale was the only person in his life who saw the real him.
Because demons saw Crowley as a troublemaker who's enjoying himself on Earth too much and is terrible at his job. A weirdo, an outcast. And angels saw him simply as a demon; lowly, disgusting, evil. Unimportant.

But not Aziraphale. He liked Crowley, despite Crowley being an angel fallen from grace, he sympathised with him, listened to him, treated him fairly and kindly; as an equal. Crowley has never experienced anything like that...
That's why he was on the verge of tears when Aziraphale suggested they can return to Heaven, be angels, do good because Hell are the bad guys. The way Aziraphale put it sounded like what Crowley had always feared; that he wasn't understood at all.

As if Aziraphale didn't know him, even after all these milennia... As if he didn't understand neither of them belong to Heaven or Hell. He thought, hoped that Aziraphale saw the good in him - he never tried to change him or fix him, after all. He accepted him for who he was.
Until that one conversation where it all fell apart. Of course there has been a huge miscommunication, but no wonder why…
