“ we all have sins to pay penance for. ” (@ Josh supernatural au )

“That doesn’t mean we should just throw our lives away at the first sign of something!” Frustrated. Josh understood what his King was saying, but it seemed like a moot point. They all had things they were paying for, sure, but now didn’t seem to be the time to be so cold about it.
Walking around their encampment, Josh heard what the other wolves all had to say. They all noticed the way the vampires seemed to lurk more and more these days. There wasn’t anywhere they could go anymore that wasn’t tainted by their scent or touched by their so called King. They moved with little organization, blood suckers just trying to survive. The hunters, as well, were slowly becoming more and more of a problem. Impossible to move in the day, and even less in the night. The wolves were getting antsy. Some of the girls, even, tended to wander out on their own just so they could experience some taste of free will.
But look where that got one of them. If she was paying for any sin, then the young wolf was paying for ignorance. For not listening, for not heeding the warnings properly. Was that meant to just be a lesson for the rest of them?
Josh took a breath and sighed. Arguing with Corvus was never what he tried to do, just as much as it was unwise. He just had opinions he felt he needed to share, for the good of all of them. But, letting his anger get the better of him wouldn’t help anything.
“Sire, I understand you have your reasons for all that you are doing, but...” he paused, considering his words before he went on. He raised his eyes to meet Corvus’, “All of our sins can not be punished by our own hands. Some things we need to learn to forgive.”

Josh just let out a little chuckle, brushing his hand down along his jaw, "Hey, if they're taking my course, they should already know. I don't just teach basic history." Not just any history, no. His lectures were on history of war and battles of the past. The machines they invented and used, the conflicts, no matter how big or small. It was a special interest class that demanded dedication from the students that signed up for it.
"It easy to fold, to give up and step back. But, it takes strength and bravery to stand tough for what you believe in. That is what I tell my students when they're failing," with a smile, he nudged her arm lightly, "And if you wanted to talk, all you had to do was ask, you know."
Genevieve might have tried to make herself seem like she would just give up if she could, but he had a feeling even she wouldn't back down from a fight. She had the right attitude for it anyway.
But, when she mentioned the attack, the little remnants of his smile faded as he looked down to his hands. A night in the hospital, a week to recover, and thankfully no broken bones were enough of a blessing. But, the students were still out there, probably walking on campus as they spoke. "I didn't get a good look at them," Josh raised his eyes back to Genevieve's, "It was dark and they were dressed like they weren't trying to be identified. I think - I could recognize their voices if I heard them again, but... All I know is they definitely aren't any of my current students."

He exhaled a sigh, looking away again, "Needless to say I've taken to grading assignments at home now. So I can be out of there before it gets dark."

It was definitely as bad as he thought. Landon might have been trying to hide it, but Josh could see it. If he hadn’t known what was going on, he might have been able to write off as nothing major, but... It was all anyone could really talk about. Even if he tried to stay out of the drama, he saw it in all his classes.
He shifted his bag from his shoulder as he moved to sit beside Landon, exhaling a sigh. He looked down for a moment, leaning forward onto his knees, “It’s okay to be upset, you know,” he raised his eyes to look over Landon’s face, studying him for another moment before he continued, “You were hurt. Break ups are never easy no matter what the situation is.”

Josh paused another second before just giving a smile and gently nudging Landon’s arm, “You should know best how quick gossip moves. Just gotta hope for the next big thing to come along quick, right?”

He had to think. The whole incident had gone by in such a blur, the only thing he had been concerned about was getting away from it. The good news had been that at least they didn't use any weapons, except he could swear one of them used a backpack full of text books. But for the damage they did to him, it seemed like a small victory. "Hm..." Josh lifted his own drink to his lips, taking a slow gulp as he deliberated, "Well, one of them misquoted 'War and Peace' to me. And when I tried to correct him and just kicked me again and made some racist comment. I sort of tuned it out after that."

The whole attacked seemed targeted to him personally. They knew just when he would leave to return home that evening and knew just the things that dug into him and made him angry. More than just the hurtful things, they were trying to get him to fight back. Josh knew if he hadn't gotten away from them, he might have given them what they wanted. Something like that would hurt his career even more than what he wanted to do now. As much as he believed in pacifism, everyone had their limits.
Josh raised his gaze back to Genevieve feeling her touch on his hand. He smiled, grateful at least she was happy to help. He knew his other friends would likely help as well, but - if something worse happened, he didn't want them to be put in that position. This was his fight.
"Thanks, Genevieve. Really, it means a lot to hear that," setting his cup down he placed his other hand over hers, "And you're right - Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. It's the biggest lesson I teach my students. And exactly why I refuse to let this go quietly," he shook his head, lowering his head and his voice, "It's not just about me. It's about the other staff, the students, anyone. If the university won't help me, I can only imagine how many have been attacked with no way to help. They need to be given hope, they deserve justice."

“It suits you, somehow. I’ve heard some speculate you are a reincarnation or something.” The little raven was certainly perfect for Corvus. His style and preferences were widely known around the campus. If not from what he taught then from the way he presented himself. It certainly left little to the imagination.

Josh moved closer to him at his desk, looking over the stuffed toy briefly, “Your idea? Or was it a gift from your students? You do seem pretty popular, especially among the young women.” Even in his own lectures he would catch them talking or see them work on assignments for Corvus. Definitely good to see them all take such a liking in poetry.

Hiding in the dark was far from optimal, and it certainly wasn’t what any of them really expected when they followed the signs. But, still, Josh couldn’t help the sense of relief whenever he stepped foot in those rusted halls. Hidden far from the humans that would rather seem them killed for simply existing. It was no paradise, but at least they weren’t being hunted anymore.
He’d seen her when she stumbled in. The other androids had been on high alert until they came to realize she was one of them. Only one of them could follow the signs, after all. But, it should never be ruled out as impossible for a human to find Jericho... Josh tried to offer a sympathetic look, approaching slowly so as to not surprise her. As she moved aside and offered him a seat, he took the chance to sit with her, exhaling a sigh as he did.
“You made it here, so... That’s always a good sign,” he started to smile, but her question made it fade again. Josh leaned his forearms on his knees, still observing her face, “You are safe here,” he said, confident in that at least, “As long as you are here, no one will find you. It may not seem like much on the surface... But, here we can be free. And no one can take that away from us.”

He needed to be careful, extra careful. This wasn't part of the plan, but Josh had to buy enough time for the others to get away, to get back to Jericho. They weren’t safe out here with the humans so on edge. No one was safe in the streets. Josh hated carrying the gun, but... He knew it was best for a last resort. The question just remained if he would even use it.
Did she know? Could she tell he was an android even without his LED? Maybe, maybe not. It was hard to say which humans knew the faces of the machines, when really none ever paid them enough mind to.
“Oh, yeah, no doubt,” Josh gave a little smile, shaking his head slightly, “It’s been - kinda scary, really. Like, there’s no telling what could happen next, you know? I’m not usually out late like this, but... Lost track of time.” He gave a light laugh, hoping the excuse didn’t sound too bad. Not when time was one thing he always was painfully aware of most days.
“I think I’ll be fine. Unless you want to escort me to the bus stop,” another smile, keeping it light even as he began to lean away to start walking, “I don’t want to take up too much more of your time. I know you are busy.”

Once Corvus put out the cigarette, Josh moved closer, setting his laptop bag down on the desk while they spoke. "I think anyone would be lucky to have been a corvid in a precious life," he offered a smile, "They are among the most intelligent birds."
The gothic style was definitely one that always described Corvus well. Josh remembered their days at college, such distant memories now. They might not have been as close as others, but since they both ended up teaching, some of their classes did end up aligning just enough they could at least be friendly. At least as much as one could be with a quiet outcast. His overall attitude or outlook never really bothered Josh. Honestly, he was busy enough without worrying too much about other people. Still - he knew the rumors, heard the stories...
"Miss James is a bright young woman," Josh nodded, looking up from the plush bird back to Corvus, "No doubt one that could go far in whatever she chooses," bringing up Corvus' popularity once more made Josh pause, keeping that little smile, "Times change, as well as our peers. And of course, what anyone says now really holds far less weight than it did before. They can talk. But, there is no denying how much your students like you."
The thought made Josh hesitate, taking a breath as if something had only just occurred to him. It was just something that he couldn't quite get out of his head, "...I suppose that's something I can't quite relate to. At least not entirely."

The incident was months in the past now, and Josh had fully healed from it. But, only physically. There was still the matter of his mind and the matter of who attacked him to handle. The story was all over campus, whispers of different versions even making their way back to him. Everyone had their own opinion about it, but not a single person was owning up or even knew anything. Josh was starting to wonder if they had even been students at all.
"I'm sure that's one thing I don't quite need to explain, but, I did want to ask you something," he raised his eyes to meet Corvus' own, "Have you heard anything? Anything different than the rumors about my attack?"
@creation-is-chaos / xxx

Josh thought he had covered all the different bases it could have been, looked at all the angles that seemed obvious enough to him. But, listening to Corvus speak, he realized that there was one angle he missed. The staff, the other professors. It hadn’t occurred to him that they could have some issue with him. Sure, Josh could be fairly opinionated, and he’d had his share of heated debates with some, but it was never malicious. Everyone he talked to at least understood the way he could get and the stances he took.
Could it be someone was really out to get him?

“The staff...” Josh lowered his voice, leaning forward towards Corvus a bit as his face twisted in concern, “That is far more serious if you are right. Do you really think - ?”
He turned quickly, looking back towards the door he had come in from. Classes were all over for the day, but there was still some students and other staff walking through the halls and between buildings. He hadn’t seen too many people on the way here, the building he taught in being across the courtyard, but there was definitely some staff that watched him. They had been watching him all the time since he returned... Even after they gave their obligatory greetings and expressions that they were glad he was okay and back. Was he just paranoid now or were they really observing to get back at him?
He shifted around the desk to Corvus, keeping his voice low, “The ones who attacked me - they were definitely young... I was starting to think they might not have been students, but - if you think this could be staff, that raises far more issues. I don’t - I don’t even know where to begin with that.”

There crowds hanging around the front gate of the castle were still dense and loud, even as the Prince had gone inside already. They were an excitable people, but far too eager to see more of his highness for themselves. The knights did their best to try and disperse the gathering, but it was a slow game. One that was sure to lead well into the afternoon. Do these people have nothing better to do? Sir Joshua thought to himself. His own to-do list was never ending, even once he was finished with the new recruits.
Speaking of new knights... This one was surely not like he was expecting. Sir Simon was receptive and observant, but there was something in his eyes that Josh was having trouble reading. As if the man was in a fog or a haze. There was already something interesting in the way he spoke. Nervous, sure, but the way he spoke was unusual. Almost as if he was trying too hard to seem like he was from the Gold Kingdom. Josh didn't want to judge it too harsh. After all, his own family and descendants came from far off lands, distant kingdoms that were vastly different than those of Europe. He was grateful that his family came up as such to give him this opportunity to serve royalty. Perhaps Sir Simon feels similarly.
"Down here is where you will sleep when you are off duty," Josh gestured to an empty room saved for him within the barracks, reserved only for the higher ranking knights, "As you will be in service to the prince your shift will depend on the hours he is awake. All knights not on the graveyard shift are expected to rise with the sun every morning for early training before their duties. Is that understood?"
"Yes, sir, it is," Sir Simon simply nodded, his eyes seeming to scan the halls around them, pausing only now and then on distant things, "Uh, when do we get meals?"
Josh took pause and turned to look over the smaller man, "Between your duties, which are shared with your fellow knights. Sir North will fill you in on all those finer details. For now, you can wait in the training grounds. The King will be assessing you and the others to decide if you are worthy."
That seemed to unsettle the knight once more. The change in his expression was minute, but it was clear to the advisor. He has seen many soldiers come and go within these walls. Both by choice and not. Was he truly just nervous about this? It started to make Josh wonder if he would even survive long enough. If he couldn’t protect the royals, then there was no point in keeping him around.
“Something wrong?”
“What? No - No, sir, I’m sorry. I was... Lost in thought.”
“Mhmm... Where do you hail from, Sir Simon?”
“Wh- where?” Simon seemed to hesitate, almost stopping in his tracks even, but he kept pace beside Josh, “Here, of course. In the Gold Kingdom -”
Josh gave a more friendly look, a slight smile, shaking his head, “It’s alright, I get it. My family did not originate here either. So, I know what it feels like to feel nervous or like you might not be accepted. But I can assure you, no matter where you are from, so long as you are willing to fight in honor of the Gold crown, you will be accepted.”
There was a long silence as the knight seemed to contemplate that, as if wondering if he should be more open with himself and with the ones he was going to be working closely with. He took a breath and exhaled a long sigh, “Out east... My family comes from a village that no longer stands, whose people were chased out or killed.”
Josh’s face turned sympathetic, letting the silence hang between them as they reached the end of the hall. He stopped in front of the knight, looking over his face, “Silver?” when Simon gave a little nod, he rest a hand on his shoulder and nodded in response, “War is a terrible thing, but you are safe here. I can promise you that. The Gold Fortress is well protected, and you will be apart of that. Go on out and get acquainted with the others. Alright?”
He watched the young knight march out into the training grounds, hesitantly approaching the others waiting and conversing together, for a few moments before retreating back down the hall to meet with the king, “You got this, kid. Hang in there,” he said to himself.
Josh straightened up when he spotted Sir North coming his way and nodded to her, giving a smile as he approached, “The recruits are all together and eager to begin. But... keep an eye on the blonde one, Sir Simon. He’s a bit wet behind the ears,” his smile widened just a little, “How are the king and prince doing?”

A short exhale left the advisor as he gave a smile, shaking his head, "He seemed pretty optimistic about this group. The letter he sent ahead suggested they are all promising, young soldiers. But, training is one thing. They can all hold a sword just fine, but when it comes to combat... Well, as I said, your newborn pup there might need some extra work," he pointed to Simon, who seemed to be observing the training grounds around him, "I fear he might not have the stomach for it. But, hopefully I'm wrong. We don't have the luxury of time to prepare more than this."
The battle night have ended with the previous Red King's death, but the war was far from over. The only thing that truly stood in the way of the Red Kingdom ruling over all of Europe was Gold. At any moment they could have ships and soldiers come down on them and attack their home, slaughter their people. The same way they did before. The question remained if they would be able to stand a chance. Could they protect their people?
Listening to Sir North mention the state of their king gave Josh doubt. On the brink of another battle at any given moment and he was drunk once more. "I swear it's as if he wakes up in a damn bottle. Much work to be done, and yet - Well... It seems that will be another matter for the prince, then." Josh had little patience to sit and play babysitter today. The chatter surrounding the ending of the Red Feast was causing more of a stir than in the past.
Between the tension the world felt watching the Red Kingdom celebrate and potentially prepare for war and their own Gold King refusing to do anything but sit drunk on his throne, it was no wonder the people of the castle tended to be unsettled. Or maybe Josh was just projecting his own frustrations with the situation. He rubbed his temples gently. All the time he's served the throne, headaches were never so frequent.
"A gallant king... I'd say he already is one," he gave a little shake of his head before returning his eyes to the Knight's face, dropping his hands once more. He retrieved a letter from his robe and handed it to her, the letter from the recruiter about their new guard, "Good luck with the recruits. If you'll excuse me, I have to go find a rope so I can pull our king out before he drowns himself in a sea of his own making."

droidtective:
connor hasn’t set foot on a university campus in many years , but he figures they’re all enough alike that he can find his way to where he’s going. it’s a bullshit call to investigate a couple of vandalism incidents near one of the buildings , & connor’s quick to put out his cigarette when he sees someone approaching , pulling his credentials from his pocket.

‘ professor, got a minute ?? detective stern, dpd. heard you guys were having a bit of a vandalism issue out here. ’

Since he started at this university, Josh had seen all sorts of things thrown at him, figuratively and literally. At first, he wrote it off as just simple racism. He was all too familiar with the way people tended to act when someone different came alone, and this was a very affluent school that typically only claimed to be progressive on the surface. But, it all became more welcoming the longer he was there. At least - until the graffiti started on his side of the building.

He heaved a sigh, hands on his hips as he stared up at it. The university were the ones too eager to call the police, but they had an image to uphold after all. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see the man walking by. He looked out of place enough that Josh knew he had to be the detective. He turned promptly and headed towards him.
"Of course, detective. Thank you for coming out, though I'm sure this won't exactly go anywhere," he exhaled a sigh, shaking his head, "My name is Joshua Parker, and actually, the vandalism has more or less been directed at me. Here, there's some just over this way," he turned back, gesturing to the wall he had been standing by, covered in hateful symbols and phrases, "I give lectures on the history of war and - well... I personally think some students just take things a bit too far sometimes."
