TITLE: THE BLOGGER IN HER LIFE
Jane rolled her eyes as she looked over to her friend who was smiling at her phone, the light from it forming patterns of shadows on her face. Brinda felt the corners of her lips tug up as she read the contents of the message.
“Let me guess,” Jane’s voice sounded almost mechanical. “Is it that blogger?”
Brinda looked up quickly. “Who?”
“Miss whats-her-name….what was it? Yes, supremehusbands?”
A soft chuckle left Brinda’s lips as Jane rolled her eyes. Sitting in their usual seat at the coffee shop near their college, they were waiting for their next lecture. And as usual, Brinda was busy with her phone. Jane was used to it- watching this girl with the weird messy hair and an even weirder fandom shirt laugh out loud over jokes or coo over grown men as if they were puppies, occasionally earning very suspicious looks from other people sitting in the shop- but things seemed to have changed the past month.
“Who uses such a bizarre url?”
“She’s actually quite awesome if you get to know her.”
Another set of eye rolling. Jane felt she must have perfected the gesture by now.
It all started few weeks ago. Some person whose blog Brinda liked had PM-ed her, that is, sent her a private message. And she had gone crazy. “OMG JANE SHE IS CHATTING WITH ME!!!”
Jane had acknowledged it with a nod of her head, busy in her new book. If only she had known what would follow.
Marie looked at Bella, and let out a soft giggle. Bella felt blood rush to her cheeks, and tried her best to ignore her friend. She turned to read the words again.
Reblogged by @thecooingcat : you really know how to make a woman blush
Marie giggled again. “You weren’t even trying Bella. When did you become such a player?!”
Bella had found this girl who called herself thecooingcat a long time ago on her dash, but had only started to interact with her when what can only be called a peculiar message dropped by her inbox from this mutual. Peculiar, she thought, for all it said was ‘drown me in your best ironstrange content’
Since then they had bonded. Bella found out that this other girl was also in college, though was she in her final year too was something she hadn’t yet asked. They seemed to have common interests- notably the shipping Ironstrange (which Marie termed obnoxious, but well, Bella had learned to ignore her best friend sometimes), singers Adele and Charlie Puth, who seemed to be, surprisingly, both of their favourites, and they even liked the same fanfiction writers. Bella felt a lot of respect for thecooingcat when she had mentioned to her she worked with under privileged kids. And when Bella told her she loved games and original soundtracks of WITCHER 3 and GOW, she had responded with “dude WITCHER 3 AND GOW SOUNDTRACKS ARE AWESOME”. Bella was floored from that day on.
They had started a little debate over angst fanfics, and it somehow ended up with Bella saying, ‘well, Brainy is the new Sexy’ and adding a Loki gif. An action she regretted until this reply came up.
Nick looked over to the laptop screen to see what Marie was laughing about, almost mysteriously appearing from a small mountain of pillows. “I thought we were going to hangout and Bella was gonna write. For her archivesfanfiction thing?” he quipped. Marie let out another laugh, stopping only when Bella glared at her. “Oh she is. She is just busy with a very critical reply.”
Bella turned around to face her computer again after making a face, as the other two shared a high five.
Jane grabbed the cup of coffee from Brinda’s hands. “No more for you Bri.”
“Aww why?!”
Jane merely sipped her own cup, looking expressionless. “Too much coffee isn’t good for the body. It’s a diuretic.”
“A what?”
“Just let it be.”
She watched as Brinda turned her attention back to the phone again, lips pursed in a thin line. She had started talking about this blogger she found on tumblr, how they liked the same music, same writers, how she inspired her own art. How they had mutual friends like im-tops-bottom and others. Jane had always felt that the people Brinda followed online had very unusual names, but knowing the kind of content she liked, it didn’t really surprise Jane. Maybe on a good day Jane would appreciate posts about cute couples who don’t exist, but she still preferred to refrain from screaming her passions out loud in the void of the internet.
Sometimes Jane wondered if she was only jealous, but she waved off the thought.
Suddenly Brinda’s head snapped up, and she shoved the phone near Jane’s face. “Just look at this! Isn’t this dialogue set funny? Supremehusbands is really good at this!”
Jane laughed reading it, but noticed something. “Hey Bri, the post set has locations on.” She looked into Brinda’s eyes, a smirk on her face. “Your beloved supremehusbands lives just a train journey away?”
“what?!” Brinda barely looked at her before dropping the phone in surprise, then checking it just to see she wasn’t lying. “Awesome!”
Both of them only looked up when a familiar voice greeted them. It was Ria, a fellow classmate from their English lectures.
“Finished your new poetry piece for the Slam Poetry event?”
Jane noticed Brinda stiffened. “I’m nearly done Ria.” A smile.
“I can’t wait to read it. See you guys around.”
Taking another sip, Jane fixed Brinda with one of her stares. “You didn’t even get started did you?”
“What do you mean Jane?” Brinda’s voice stuttered.
“Dude you sweating bullets! Do you think I can’t see through your lies?”
Brinda merely looked at her feet, while Jane went on. “You have only been online, messaging and giggling. Stop flirting, you have other stuff to do too!”
“I’m sorry Jane.” Her voice was a whisper now.
“You should be.”
Marie and Nick watched Bella pacing around the room. When Nick looked at Marie in confusion, she mouthed “it seems her crush has been offline for a week. She doesn’t know what to do.”
Bella turned to look at them sharply, as if asking for advice.
“Why don’t you use this time to write what you were planning for your other website.” Nick said, immediately realizing how bad a move it was. Bella flashed a glare, while Marie gave a high pitched whistle before laughing. “He isn’t wrong you know, Bella-tricks” Marie added, using the name thecooingcat had given Bella especially upon hearing about their shared obsession of harry potter and Loki.
Bella sighed before she nodded. Maybe she had to move on, atleast for the time being.
Nick and Marie exchanged a look, before the latter winked at her and pulled out her phone.
“Brinda?”
“What THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE SO EARLY IN THE MORNING IT’S SUNDAY?!”
“Whoa calm down.” Jane dodged a pillow and forced a cup into Brinda’s hand. “Coffee and chill, dude.”
It was only when Brinda gulped down the drink was Jane allowed to speak again. “Get dressed, something nice. We are going somewhere.”
Brinda’s eyes narrowed. “Where?”
“I’ll tell you on the train.”
Jane watched from the window of a coffeeshop nearby the bookstore from where she had dropped Brinda. She had felt guilty after the accusation she threw earlier, and decided she wanted to do something for her best friend. That’s when Jane decided to track down this supremehusband person.
Funny, it turned out to be much easier than she had imagined. It seems her brother knew one of the blogger’s acquaintances, a girl named Marie, and when Jane got in touch with her, Marie was more than willing to help set up a date, saying that Bella, which seemed to be the real name of the mysterious blogger in Brinda’s life, was as mesmerized with Brinda as she was with her.
She saw Brinda approach a tall girl with shoulder length hair, who also seemed to be over flowing with nervous laughter, and shake hands. It seemed as if they had introduced themselves, and after a few minutes of awkward initial conversation, they had really become comfortable. She watched Brinda laugh out loud as Bella cracked a joke, and watched surrounding passerby’s give both the girls familiar suspicious looks.
She turned to look across her seat at Marie and Nick, all three of them smiling.
“It seems like a happy ending is on the cards, my people.” Said Nick, before they all raised their glasses and pretended to make a toast, their own laughter echoing in the secluded shop.
