"Holy fuck," Aiden gasps, "We just did that."
Taylor looks at him in shock, "Yeah, you almost fainted."
They're staggering home, giggling and gasping for breath, blood tripping from Aiden's nose.
"Next time we're trying to get information from a guy who is known to have anger issues, how about we don't incite them?"
Aiden pouts, "But it was easy! I couldn't help it."
She sighs, "You ruined the mission."
"Yeah, well, the mission ruined my nose."
"...because you ruined the mission."
"Okay, fuck you!"
The door opens to show a very, very, concerned Ben.
He shuffles with his phone, looking at them with wide eyes, What happened?
"We were supposed to interrogate the guy that we caught running away from that old facility on the back-gate camera, and it was supposed to be harmless, but then someone decided to rile them up! For absolutely no other reason then- not my words- fun. So. Yeah."
Ben looks at Taylor amused, then his eyes flick back to Aiden. Give me your phone.
Aiden huffs, but nevertheless gives his phone to Ben. Taylor watches as he tucks it into his sketchbook, so that he's able to hold both with one hand.
Come on Aiden, let's get you patched up.
"I can do it myself," Aiden huffs, walking inside. "I don't need your help."
Ben rolls his eyes, Go ahead, then.
"I will!" Aiden glares, stomping up the staircase. Taylor watches the whole exchange from the door.
You can come inside, the text-to-speech says, and Taylor's eyes jerk up to Ben's.
"Oh! Uh, right," She smiles, awkwardly taking her shoes off and walking in, "Thanks."
She and Ben hadn't had too much time together since the whole... ordeal, and it was weird. She was used to him being around all the time, and then he wasn't.
A few quiet seconds pass, before Aiden calls from upstairs, "HEY BEN! WHICH BANDAID DO I USE?"
Which is probably something he should know, but whatever.
Ben sighs, looking at Taylor. See what I have to deal with.
She snorts, "Good luck."
He drops his diary on the table, and walks up the stairs begrudgingly as Taylor watches.
She isn't exactly sure what she's supposed to do in their house. Sure, it wasn't like she hadn't been here before, nor was it like she was a stranger- but it felt weird being by herself in a place she wasn't well-accustomed too.
She pulls out her phone and begins idly playing around. Right as she opens her photos, she gets a text message from Ashlyn.
Hey Tay. Did you guys get the info?
Taylor sends back a quick thumbs up, and then goes to her notes app to recall the little information they'd gotten out of the guy before Aiden had started aggravating him.
Nothing.
Shit, she realizes, I took the notes on Aiden's phone.
She's about to go upstairs and ask Aiden when she sees it, peeking out of Ben's notebook. She vaguely remembers that he took it from him only a few minutes ago, but she can't fathom why Ben would leave it here.
If anything, Ben was the most protective of his sketchbook. Nobody was allowed to look through it- Not even Aiden.
He took it everywhere, including (she can hear it clearly in Aiden's complaining tone) the bathroom.
Taylor hates breaching people's privacy. Seriously. She despises it.
But... one quick peak wouldn't hurt? She was curious. Really curious. What could be in there that Ben would protect with his life?
She almost hits herself in the head for giving in- she knows she's better than that.
But she also needed Aiden's phone, like now.
Ashlyn had begun spamming her a minute ago, telling her to give her the goddamn information so she could go to sleep already. And Taylor would, if she had it on her own phone.
She grabs the edge of the phone and slides it out, carefully trying to not push the book open.
And maybe her subconscious was just too fucking curious, or maybe the wind from the window had blown just enough to pull it open, but it did.
Fuck.
Taylor immediately closes it when it flutters ajar, trying her best not to look at it.
But then she sees a drawing that's just... all too familiar.
Way too familiar.
She opens to the page and stares for a second.
Because it's her.
The picture is her school ID photo, one that she'd been complaining about forever, drawn to look... ethereal. Is this... is this what she looked like in real life? Ben's art skills were amazing.
Why would he hide these?
She flips the page, maybe on purpose, maybe on accident, and is met with another photo of her.
This time, it's candid- her nails a light shade of blue.
She remembers this, when Ashlyn had painted them for her during one of their group sleepovers. Aiden had demanded she do his too, while the rest of them tried to convince Tyler.
Ben and Logan had gone down without a fight, and Tyler eventually agreed on the promise that they wouldn't paint his bright red.
So, naturally, they painted his bright red.
She smiles, recounting the memory, and looks at the picture again. It's just her, but her mind easily fills in the others around her.
She flips the page again- this time, there was no accident- and is met with yet another picture of her.
She flips it again. And again. And again.
Taylor's eyes widen when she reaches the end of the drawn pages.
It's all her.
The entire sketchbook is just... her.
Oh.
There's a lot of thoughts swirling in her head at the moment, but all are shoved to the far-side of her mind when she hears footsteps coming down the stairs.
She shoves the book away, almost falling the other direction.
Aiden comes in first, nose cleaned and bandaged. "Did you send the information to Ashlyn?"
Her heart is still pounding, "Mh hm, I'm doing that right now."
He nods approvingly, "Cool. Hey Ben, do we have any more candy?"
No. You ate it all.
He scoffs, "Sue me, I'm a teenager who wants candy. Hey Tay, wanna go grab some?"
"Yes!" She nearly gasps in thanks to finally have a reason to leave.
Aiden doesn't pay attention to it, just shrugging, "Cool. C'mon."
As he drags her out, she sees Ben grab his notebook and pull it open, pen in hand.
This... this was definitely something she was going to have to revisit later.
She looks at Aiden, square in the eye, as they walk out the door. He's struggling to uncap his water bottle, groaning as he tries to pull it open.
"Hey Aiden?"
The cap falls off, and Aiden takes a sip. "Mm?"
"Does Ben like me?"
He spits out his water.
inspired by the prompt: Taylor and Aiden come back to Aiden's house after going out doing something fun but dangerous, where Ben is hanging out. They exchange some words but then Ben notices Aiden bruised something and pulls him away to treat it, leaving behind his notebook. Taylor decides to go through there because she's curious (or a better reason, who knows) and comes across one (or several) drawing(s) he made of her. She acts like she didn't see it. by @random-gamer1942 !! read it on ao3 as well !!
