Sweet liddol Alby ;-;
You two have been two peas in a pod long before the war even came to light to the US
A week before he left to join the paratroopers he stopped by your home with your favorite flowers and his most clean suit on
He held you as you sobbed at the news of his signing up to fight and as he looked at you, skin glistening under the moonlight that accentuated your tears, he told you he loved you
You, of course, reciprocated those feelings and you tried to spend every moment together before he had to leave you
THE LETTERS OMG
I firmly believe he is a poet
maybe not as literate as sharkboy Webster but he knows enough to write you letters that filled your body with loving warmth and shivers every time you read them
He would tell you about everything, never sparing a detail and vice versa, you would tell him about every little detail going on back home
You would be the only one (Besides Winters and Speirs) that he would confide in about his fears of war
you let him know how normal they were, these young men simply signed a paper and were now being trained to possibly give their lives for a war that they had no part in creating
You admired him for that, truly.
No matter how scared he was he never gave up because he wanted to fight for his home, for his family and for you.
If fighting this war meant you and him would have a better, more peaceful life afterwards, then he was more than willing to
He has two little photocards of you that he keeps clipped to his bible
its tradition that every night he would say goodnight to those pictures and press a kiss to them before he went to sleep
You both stayed loyal to each other
It was common for soldiers to seek comfort with other women, regardless if they were already pledged to another but Albert REFUSED to indulge.
He was yours and only yours and you were his and only his.
The day before their jump to Normandy, Albert did SO MUCH praying
He wanted to try his hardest to make it back to you but he decided that he would ask the big guy above for a tiny bit of help
He wrote to you as often as he could, regardless that he was in enemy territory.
The minute he made it to a town he mailed them off, hoping he'd still be alive by the time you wrote him back
Taking Carentan was probably one of his most terrifying experiences
When he had his spout of hysterical blindness he truly felt broken
He was terrified he would never gain his sight back and he cried at the thought of never seeing your face again.
He decided that Winters would never know how truly thankful he was to him for calming him down enough so he could regain his sight
He wrote to you about that and in the midst of him writing, Skip took his photos of you (ya know, that scene where they're waiting for orders after they took carentan) and the teasing this boy got for having a catch like you was RELENTLESS
He almost punched him if he's being honest with himself
The moments they were stuck in the hedgerow was when Albert had his most doubts about himself
He couldnt even write to you and have you calm him down like you always do so he was simply left to his own thoughts
He never wanted this war, and he hates having to participate in it but it was for you. He needed you to have a happy and safe future and no matter the size of his role in the war it was important. HE was important.
Winters and Speirs' little pep talks helped him nearly as much as you did and he truly found his courage that day
meanwhile, you're a worried mess back in the states
it was hard for you to try and go about your day like the man you loved wasnt off risking his life every day
It was even more tough when you had a stack of letters to send but you had no address to send them too
You and Albert both spent many a night crying yourselves to sleep with the thoughts that you may never see eachother again.
Then came the day.
Albert honestly regretted his courage the day he got shot.
He couldn't think of anything other than the fact that he may die and you wouldn't know until you got that dreadful letter in the mail from his CO
And when you got the letter from him that he wrote to you in the hospital, you couldn't help but be grateful that he was leaving. Even though it was because of a wound, he was coming back to you, back to your arms, and that night you both cried happy tears.
He was coming home.
He took a taxi home, not telling you due to him wanting to surprise you and he admits he almost fainted when you opened your door, looking as ethereal as your photos standing infront of him
The kiss you two shared on your front porch will forever be in your memories.
And right there on that porch he asked you to marry him and without a single hesitation you told him yes.
However, things wouldn't be all peaches and cream for a little while.
The things he'd done, the things he'd seen and experienced were a lot for him.
He often woke up in cold sweats, dreaming such dreams that it took him a few minutes to adjust and remember that he was home. He was with you, not in a cold, wet trench.
You had a sixth sense with his nightmares tbh
You didn't even need to awake, you would just roll over, wrapping him in your arms and pressing soft sleepy kisses to his back as he intertwined your fingers with his
The hauntings of his time in the war would never really go away but your gentle touches and kisses made them all the more bearable.
i firmly stand by the fact that, you two got married the day the war ended
You were in the middle of your reception with your families when your radio blasted the news.
It was over. Things were over.
And that night you two went to sleep with no worries and surprisingly no nightmares.
