DAENERYS, CERSEI and SANSA + on being a queen*

On the ADWD cover for Brazil, I [Marc Simonetti] put Daenerys at the top of the stairs of the Meereenese pyramid. I had undoubtedly been, unconsciously, influenced by the series. And George told me that Daenerys wants equality for everyone, she wants to be at the same level as her people, so I had her climb down to keep it consistent.

I mean, in some sense the Disney Princess archetype — the whole princess mythos — that we’re all familiar with is a legacy of the troubadours of the romance era of medieval France.

Sansa completely bought into that, loved everything about that. She dreamed of jousts, bards singing of her beauty, fair knights, being the mistress of a castle and perhaps a princess and queen. The whole romantic thing.

*Note that these comparisons can only go so far since Sansa only ever expected to be (but never became) the monarch’s wife during AGOT-ACOK, while Cersei (who ruled as regent on behalf of the monarch) and Dany (who is the monarch herself) are actual leaders and rulers meant to be compared and contrasted.
