sometimes you struggle to speak

at times words feel like they ooze off your tongue like the slow crawl of molasses, you drawl on and on in an endless mess and the tacky sweet syrup that pours out of your mouth feels foreign, a saccharine reserved only to compensate others for the bitter thoughts you mask

in some moments words fail you, and you are left floundering, drowning in your struggles and sorrows, left to shove words together in a feeble attempt to ground yourself in the storm of your mind

and it's in these moments that you almost fail to notice the quiet calmness of a gently placed hand on the curve of your back, while their other palm guides your head to rest in the crook of their neck, a quiet whisper of reassurance and the sweet soft lie that this warm embrace was for them and not you

words? they might never stop being hard, but you know you won't need words for them to notice the slight furrow in your brow, the subtle tension in your shoulders, or the uneven pace of your breathing

words might continue to evade you, but it's in the quiet embrace of your lover that you are reminded that your thoughts don't have to be heavy, and the subtle gravity of their presence never fails to ground you
