Time to ramble headcanons about my favourite Storm fairies again

Rumble is autistic

Glimmer has social anxiety

In combination they actually work great: Rumble's complete disregard of what other people would think helps Glimmer get out of her shell and teaches her to look inward for confirmation instead of always outwards, while she becomes Rumble's social antenna and teaches him to pick up on certain social cues or outright tells him what he cannot read between the lines

It works because neither expects the other to change, they both accept each other as they are. If Glimmer has difficulty taking initiative or needs confirmation, Rumble will take the lead, no questions asked, and if she notices that he misses unspoken communication or hidden messages, she'll translate it for him into clear, concrete words

Of course, working together for as long and intensively as they have, both of them do change: Glimmer becomes much more confident and less susceptible to irrelevant influences, like Rumble, and Rumble becomes much better at recognising and handling emotions, both in himself and in others, like Glimmer

This interplay is what has made them an unstoppable team: not only do they complement each other, they also improve each other

In a way they depend on each other: Glimmer needs Rumble's steady demeanour, and he needs her corrections on his behaviour

Things went wrong at the Games where the Garden fairies won because Rosetta and Chloe's performance rubbed their innate character traits the wrong way: always needing to be in control and understanding the situation, Rumble was unequipped to handle the unexpected rise and tactics of the Garden talents and therefore reverted to a bad version of himself, frustrated and stressed until he lashed out badly in an attempt to restore the situation as it should have been

Glimmer, for her part, had relied on her teammate's focused mindset, and him losing his usual stability in combination to a new threat affecting their performance caused her to revert to her easily frightened old self, afraid to talk back to him and set him straight
