TWs: mention of abandonment by a parent, death of a parent, dead body

Jesse opened the front door, only to be met by complete silence. It was unusual; her mother mostly worked from home, thus you could always hear her talking loudly or at least typing on her keyboard.

And that’s exactly why, when Jesse heard nothing, she felt her heartbeat speed up. Something was wrong.

She slowly crept through the house,  not even taking her snow covered shoes off, leaving muddy footprints. She’d deal with Élaine’s anger if it turns out she was just paranoid later.

All windows were covered with grayish curtains that’ve seen better days, bathing the room in an otherwise comforting semi darkness.

“Mother?” asked Jesse, entering the kitchen

There was a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, towering above the counter. She paid it no mind and swiftly moved across the room and back into the hall.

She glanced at the doormat, next to which everyone left their shoes. There she saw the unmistakable black knee high boots her mother wore.

Which obviously meant  she was home,

Right?

Neither Will’s nor Allie’s shoes were here, which meant that the twins were probably still at school, or maybe at the shopping mall with some friends.

Since moving to Poland fourteen years ago—when the twins were only a year old—Élaine’s never actually bothered to teach them—or herself, for that matter—Polish. Thus she ended up working in an international corporation, while Will and Allie went to an English speaking high school.

Jesse however was taught the language by her Polish-born father, who—after her birth mother’s death—remarried Élaine and then disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Truth be told she’s always believed he’d figured a 2+3 family was too much responsibility and just ditched them.

She took out her phone, quickly found her mother’s saved number and pressed call.

The obnoxiously loud pop song Élaine had as her ringtone reverberated through the house. She followed it into the living room,  feeling more and more uneasy with every moment.

Then, she saw it.

Her mother’s lifeless eyes staring at her, open yet not seeing.

Her phone clattered to the ground
