in honor of our lovestay boy coming home.

“Do you remember when we first met?” The love of your life asks, looking at you, as the two of you stroll hand in hand down the cobblestone street.
You look at the taller boy, nodding at him.
He licks his lip, before he continues,
“That was the best day of my life.”
His long fingers squeeze yours tight.
“The best day of my life.” he repeats.
“The best.” He mutters, kissing you softly.

On your tiptoes, you still can’t reach the copy of the book you’ve been saving up to buy.
You try once.
You try again.
You try a third time.
You groan.
A hand, attached to an arm, with a silver chain bracelet, grabs the last copy.
God damn it. It’s like every single movie trope where now I turn around and it’s a cute boy who also wants the last copy but gives it to me and somehow gives me his phone number too.
You brace yourself and turn around, ready for a classically cute face.
Your jaw drops anyways, when you realize-
He’s fucking gorgeous.
“Hi. I noticed you couldn’t reach that book, and after a few attempts, i thought maybe I could be like the knight in the book and help the pretty lady.”
You blink.
You blink twice.
“You’ve read it?” You ask, quietly, your voice cracking halfway through the short sentence. You flush in embarrassment.
The boy nods.
“It’s one of my favorites actually.” He smiles widely, straight teeth showing, eyes crinkling.
You smile back.
“Well uh, here.” He says, handing the book to you.
Tucking the hardcover in the crook of your elbow, you look at the boy.
He runs his hand through his hair.
“Um. would you want to meet here next week and talk about it?” he asks, shyly. He looks down at the floor, waiting for your answer.
“Yeah-” you smile, “I’d love that. Umm how about this time next week, 11am?”
A bigger grin than before appears on his face and he nods.

A week later, and you sit in front of the brick bookstore, waiting for the boy that you had talked to. It took you until you had gotten home that evening that you never got his name. All you had to remember him was the mint and cotton smell, the smile, and the freckle under his eye that was so endearing that you couldn’t stop thinking about him.
“I’m so sorry that I’m late.” the boy says, whipping around the corner, literally sprinting.
You check your watch.
“Wow, three whole minutes late. I’m so disappointed.” You say, grinning at him.
He sighs and turns away.
“Wait wait, i was kidding.” you say, grabbing his wrist. He turns around to face you and you realize that you had just abruptly grabbed his arm. You let go quickly, but your sweater paw sleeves got caught on his chain bracelet. He chuckles, grabbing your hand in his bigger one, taking his other unoccupied hand and tugging the string loose.
You look down at your hands, conjoined and suddenly feel warm.
He tucks a fallen string of hair behind your ear and looks up at you.
“I’m Hyunjin, by the way.”
You smile.

It took him 3 months of book club ‘dates’ for him to officially ask you out. And when he did, you said yes in a heartbeat. Hyunjin took you to get takeout and borrowed a friend’s truck. He filled it with blankets and pillows and took the two of you down to the beach. The two of you stayed up until 3 AM talking about books, classic tropes, his job, your job, your families, friends. Anything and everything under the moon and stars. The two of you woke up, curled into one another and watched the sunrise.
Six months into dating, you finally spent the night over at his house. From then on, you and him practically lived at each other’s houses. Unless Hyunjin was out of town on tour or doing promo, the two of you would basically confine yourselves to your bedrooms. Considering Hyunjin is a dancer, his stamina was out of this world.
You would bring him and the boys lunch at the studio. He would bring you new books on your days off.
Coffee on Wednesdays. Recording days.
You would work from ‘home’ or more accurately, the studio to be with your boyfriend.
Making dinner with Hyunjin on Thursdays at the dorm.
He’d stand behind you, teaching you how to make his favorite dishes.
Days off for both of you on Saturdays meant reading books, watching k-dramas and snuggling all day. Maybe a little more, at your place. No bothering the boys with loud noises.
Sundays would be another lazy day, this time at the dorm. Hyunjin would play video games with Felix mostly. You would cook with Chan and Minho. Changbin would wander between the younger five playing games and the conversations in the kitchen.
It was a big family.
And you loved them all.

Now here you are, five years later.
Your sixth anniversary.
Hyunjin has messaged you that morning asking you to pick up take out and meet him on the beach. You made your way underneath the pier where jinnie had asked you to meet him.
You smile, as you look around the date night spot, your boyfriend had chosen.
A blanket spread out.
Candles pushed into the sand.
Flames flickering in the wind.
A handsome boy stands staring at the ocean.
Sparkling in the light of the moon.
You set the food on the blanket, walking up behind him and hugging him.
You can hear him take a deep breath, before he turns around.
“Happy anniversary, baby.” He says, kissing you.
You repeat the three words back to him, kissing him once.
Twice.
Three times.
He clears his throat, grinning at you.
“Do you want to eat? Or do you want your present first?” He asks, dragging you towards the blanket. You frown, looking at him.
“I thought you said no gifts?” you raise an eyebrow.
“Hyunjin.”
He holds his hands up, laughing.
“No, I told you ‘don’t get me a gift this year. I have you and that’s all I need.’ I didn’t say I wasn’t getting you one. And it’s too late now, baby. I already have it.”
You shake your head, a smile playing on your face.
“You’re a dork Hwang Hyunjin.”
he nods in response, pulling a book from the backpack set to the side.
“Maybe. But I’m your dork. And i know you’re gonna give me crap for the cheesy lines but let me just say them all first.” He takes a deep breath.
“When I first met you, you were standing on your tiptoes, reaching for a book. You tried three times to grab it because you are so adamant that you don’t need help. The second time I met you, I held your hand, and felt sparks shoot up my arm. You got your sweater caught on my bracelet. I learned your name the second time i met you.” He swallows.
“The third time I saw you, you had two cups of coffee in front of you, a mocha for you and an americano for me. You were in a sundress because it was finally getting warm outside and you were so excited about it. You were sitting on a leather chair in the bookstore, waiting for me. As cheesy as it is, I think that’s when I fell in love with you.
“ You always do everything in threes, or in multiples of three. You tried three times to get your book. You tug on your ponytail three times when youre reading. You take three sips of your coffee. You waited three minutes for me, that day, a week after we met. After a few weeks, I picked up on it and started doing it too. I waited three months to ask you out. Our first date was on March 3rd. We stayed up until 3AM before you crashed and then we woke up to the sunrise.
“Six months into dating, we got a little wild.” He wiggles his eyebrows at you. You giggle.
He smiles at you before continuing,
“Nine months into dating, you were constantly with me. You became my rock. My sounding board. My everything.
“One year into dating, and I told you I loved you.
“Three years into dating, and I realized something.” He hands you the book, and gestures for you to open it.
You smile as you realize, it’s the same book Hyunjin had grabbed off a shelf for you so long ago. You open it, and blink back tears.
A hole is cut in the book.
“You do everything in threes, but for once, I’m hoping that I only have to do this once.” Hyunjin says, getting down on one knee.
A ring lay inside, alongside a quote from the tale you held in your hands.
“Will you marry me?” He asks softly.
You glance up at him, eyes teary. You smile wide.
“Yes. Yes. Yes.”

You eye your husband, kissing him again.
“Really? That was the best day of your life?”
He shrugs, pecking you once more.
Three kisses.
“Well, it’s how I met you.”
“I liked our wedding.” You say.
“But not the proposal? Do you know how hard I worked on that?”
You laugh.
“The proposal was cute, but you cut a book! Our book, Hyunjin.”
He throws hands up to the sky, yours still entwined with his.
“I bought you a new one!”
