in 2020 we're recognising that annabeth wasn't wrong or even necessarily misguided for still believing that luke was redeemable despite evidence against the fact. in fact, it's completely natural for her to still cling on to the hope that he would return to himself before it was too late. we have to remember that annabeth has known luke for a long time, and crucially, she knew him before his anger & bitterness had fully crystallised and curdled into vengefulness, before he'd turned his back on the camp. we know how important the concept of "home" and "family" is to annabeth (they represent stability, lasting comfort, that "something permanent" that she's been deprived of her whole life), and so how important luke's promise was to her. maybe she was in denial, but let's not forget that it was PRECISELY her unwavering belief in luke's humanity and what he represented to her ("family," home) that effectively saved olympus. it was this specific reminder of "family" that jarred luke, it was annabeth being his anchor to his mortality that enabled him to make the fateful decision to "yield." if annabeth had given up on luke, if she had given up on the promise of home & family, if she had ceased to believe that it could triumph over glory and pride and cynical anarchism, kronos would have won.
