Mage oppression and Possession
The Mage Rebellion, possessions and mages resorting to blood magic are inevitable seeing How the Chantry and circle handle magic.
This is a (partially intended [ex. Meredith] ) sort of a self-fullfilling prophecy made by the Chantry/Templars.
The Chantry’s power is based on and supports fear of mages. Its main motto is ‘‘ Magic exists to serve man and never to rule over him’’ how would it survive if magic were eradicated?

The situation, isolation and mental abuse mages suffer in the circle.

Personal Analysis under the cut
1.(seclusion with little access to (the healing/comforting beauty of nature. No windows. Can’t see the sun, moon, feel the air)
2. The general indoctrination. The mages hesitate/are threatened not to have opinions on their situation, living in a half-world and not knowing what the real world is like. This could also apply to the difficulties circle mages face in the outside world from not being taught real-life skills.
3. Mage children are taken from their homes and their loved ones and are disowned and in some cases are shunned by the ones that loved them. They are not allowed to (re)build familial and romantic ties. They grow up being taught that they cannot have lovers, get married, have children.
1 and 3. Could be the Mage children adjusting to the circle’s reality.
4. Isolation and possession. Demons are the Angels of pain and the mages reach their final breaking strain and become Abominations. Or they are broken, go insane first and allow themselves to be possessed by demons.
5. Wingbeat = freedom, heartbeat = life
6. Mages having their minds and spirits broken from the mental abuse they suffer and are constantly brought down.
7. (Fear of) Tranquility/Templars
8. Resorting to blood magic or being killed for fighting back.
9. Pacts with demons
The last laugh is on you, Mocking you (it ends badly, used further against their plight) To the oblivion (are forgotten as humans, die broken, only remembered as abominations)

warrior fem!hawke x anders is such a compelling ship to me i know we love mage!hawke x anders but the idea of hawke being fiercely dedicated to mage freedom without being a mage absolutely rips me to shreds.
in every single oppressed mage she sees her little sister, she sees her father, she sees anders. all of the mages she loves. she's never been afraid of mages, and always ALWAYS was so damn angry that she could never make a difference when she saw the fear of being discovered in the eyes of her family.
i think she might support anders and mage freedom even more than some mage hawkes would, because her dedication to the cause is so selfless and there is no internalized self doubt or hatred of being a mage to contend with (which i think hawke as a mage might deal with). i think anders would love her even more for that dedication.
this hawke is usually purple in her dialogue but when it comes to mage's rights she is red and she would have helped anders if he told her his plan. kirkwall is literally an authoritarian police state after all, and the chantry is a huge symbol of that power.
in the end she runs away with anders, and it takes time to build up their trust again. not because she didn't agree with him, but because he wouldn't let her help. maybe this makes justice fall for her too. i like to imagine they all get their happy ending.
i dont think im done talking abt this, actually. i'm going to try and explain how stupid this whole thing is because there's always SOMEONE going on about how if it wasn't for the circles, and the parallels of the circles to real-life atrocities, "the mage-templar debate" would be a two-sided issue.
actually, it's not.
the "mage-templar debate" is not an issue of ethics even before addressing the conditions of the circle, because you have other options.
the basic premise of the argument is "mages are inherently a danger to themselves and everyone around them. is locking them up to reduce the harm they pose to the general population the correct ethical decision?" but the entire concept is already bullshit even before you address the conditions of the circle, which is where most people claim the civil rights movement comparisons come from.
because. CANONICALLY. you have other options. you have options within the context of the games to reduce the "threat" or "danger" of magic. there's no cases of mass abominations in rivain. there's no cases of mass abominations (as we know understand & abominations anyway) amongst the avvar. there's no cases of mass abominations in tevinter. from the get-go the idea that "mages have to be locked up for their and everyone's safety" is already bullshit, before you even touch the issue of the circles. even before you get to the conditions of the circle, the very existence of mages in rivain and nevarra and the avvar and tevinter already renders the argument null and void.
from it's very inception, the entire premise -- mages are inherently a danger to themselves and everyone around them -- is proven to be a belief, not a fact.
thinking again about how fucked up it is that bioware revealed that the evanuris aren't actually gods but rather murderers and slavers - but they said they're not gonna confirm anything about whether the maker exists.
the chantry gets so much slack in-game imo as a parallel to the catholic church, especially when you compare it to how the other religions/spiritual beliefs are portrayed.
you get so many companions and sympathetic npcs who follow the chant and believe in the maker and aside from the templars as an institution and a cleric or two they're basically made out to be good when they're... colonizing, forcing assimilation, and demonizing other groups.
outside of velanna and merrill there aren't really any proud dalish characters, solas and abelas make a point of distancing themselves from a dalish pc.
sten is the only qunari companion who continues to follow the qun regardless of player choices.
the avvar are portrayed as basically wild, uncivilized barbarians.
it just seems like most if not all the chantry-aligned characters either have their faith confirmed or held up as the best option despite its flaws. the tone is so often like, "yes the chantry committed genocide but look! mother gisele is helping both the refugee mages and the church-appointed supersoldiers hunting them down and executing them. it's equality! not everyone in the chantry is a bad person!"
I was talking about Dragon Age with someone irl and at one point mentioned I didn’t like how much Inquisition made you side with the Chantry and when they asked me why I said something along the lines of “I really don’t like the Chantry, Anders was right” before I remembered what a controversial statement that second part is…. It got awkward.
But… I still stand by it.
Remember when Justinia had a Tranquil (his name was Pharamond) go to Adamant to see if there was a cure for the Rite of Tranquility and when he did as she asked and cured himself she punished him by ordering him be made Tranquil again while he cried and begged her to just kill him instead?
Remember a couple years before that when she had Leliana go to Kirkwall to warn Elthina to flee because she was planning to order an Exalted March on Kirkwall because more and more mages weren't taking their imprisonment, tortures, rapes and murders without resistance?
Yet we're supposed to see her death as sad and awful.
The fact that there are still so many people willing to defend the Rite of Tranquility is absolutely mind boggling to me. I'm sorry (actually, I'm not sorry) but there is no defense for it.
It does not matter if the mage consents to it. I can't even rightfully defend the idea that any mage would give genuine consent to such a horrid practice. It's not consenting if the individual is agreeing out of fear, and we should all know by now that there's no real reason for a mage to agree to tranquility other than out of pure fear.
Nearly every mage you encounter is absolutely terrified by the idea of being made tranquil. We all saw how Jowan reacted to the threat of it. Not to mention that most tranquil mages are either used as work cattle or are sexually abused by Templars, the order that is supposedly there to protect them.
It's disgusting. It's revolting. There's no room to play devil's advocate here.
