The title is a portmanteau merging "Libertad" (Spanish for "liberty") and "tango", symbolizing Piazzolla's break from classical tango to tango nuevo (”new tango”).
He was recorded and published Libertango in 1974 in Milan. He was in Italy because he got fed up with the political atmosphere in his born country. A politician which some called a fascist and a dictator had been the president of Argentina.

Characters Atobe Keigo and Sanada Genichiro, who were partners at the All American Goodwill Game, first met when they both went to watch the same tango concert. Both of them, whom were not synchronized as partners began using this piece of music as a guidance and created the move ’Tango Towards Destruction’ and eventually defeated their strong American opponents, thus earning them the name, the Tango Pair in the anime.
