Make This Work (Jin Drabble, Angst, Fluff)
You made the decision two weeks ago, told him nine days ago, and moved back home a week ago. It was messy, completely unorganized, and sudden… but it had to be done. Your family needed you. More specifically, your mother needed you. Her health had taken a turn for the worst, and without anyone but good neighbors close by, you were needed by her side.
Jin, your boyfriend who also happened to be one of the world’s most popular idols, had not taken it well. “You have to… I’m sorry, what?”
“I have to go back home.”
“Why?”
“You know why.”
Jin bit his lip to keep his emotions in check, worrying the skin with his teeth until it flushed red. “And when do you leave?”
You sighed. “Two days from now.”
His large brown eyes grew wide. “Are you… are you serious?”
Afraid your voice would crack, you simply nodded.
There wasn’t time to do a proper good-bye. There were no parties thrown to say bye to your friends, no one to help you pack, and no teary farewells at the train station or anything like that. After you told Jin, he had abruptly left the city for either another photo shoot or music video shooting (you weren’t sure which), and aside from a few too-lighthearted texts, you hadn’t heard from him.
You could only feel emptiness as you locked your apartment door for the last time. It was as if your body was trying so hard not to feel pain, it shut down all your nerve endings the way someone shut the power down on a raging party. One day, you were full of laughter and hope. The next, you were scared and had no idea what your future looked like.
You knew you were doing the right thing, but that knowledge did nothing to quell your longing for your old life. You missed your apartment and your friends, but most of all, you missed him. If only you were able to express that before you left. Maybe he would have–
Would have what? Made a huge scene breaking up with you? Begged you to stay with tears streaming down his face? Told you he would come with you? Yeah, right. Jin was an idol living his ultimate dream. He would never give that up for something as insignificant as you. It was better this way. A clean break. When he returned home, all he would find left of you was an empty apartment and maybe a lingering trace of your scent. Probably not even that.
You were out in your yard, hugging yourself as you watched the sun set over the fields, when you heard a sound from behind you. You turned and took a stumbling step backwards, sharply inhaling at the sight before you.
He stood there, a small smile spreading over his lips, hands in his oversized hoodie pockets. “Hey.”
“Jin!” you gasped, still trying to catch your breath. “What the fuck– I mean, what are you doing here?”
He chuckled at your colorful outburst. “What do you think? I’m here to see my girlfriend.”
You didn’t think your eyes could grow any wider, but somehow, they did. “Girlfriend? What? I thought we were–”
“You’re wrong.”
You almost scowled when he interrupted you. He knew how much you hated that, but you were still too in awe over his presence to say anything. “W-What?” you stuttered.
He took a step towards you, closing the last bit of distance between you two. “I said, you’re wrong. We’re not broken up. We’re not separated.”
You almost didn’t dare to breath. “Then what are we?” you asked, your voice nearly a whisper.
Jin reached up and slid his hand from the small of your back upwards until it was tangled in your hair, the way he had done a thousand times before. “We’re us.”
He kissed you then, leaning down to accommodate your short height, brushing his lips against yours the way a fresh breeze brushed through a field of flowers. You took only a second to be surprised before you raised yourself to your tiptoes and threw your arms around his neck, deepening the kiss.
He groaned a little and took his lips from yours for only a millisecond before tilting his head the other way and kissing you once more, nearly smothering you from the force of it all.
It was easy to fall back into him. You had every inch of his skin, every one of his likes and dislikes, every pitch of his melodic voice, completely memorized. His essence was permanently tattooed on your heart. How did you ever think you could live without him?
Once you broke apart, Jin looked in your eyes, pressing his forehead to yours. “I know things will be harder from here on out just because we won’t always be near each other… but I’ll come out here as often as I can.”
“So you think we can make this work?”
“Of course. After all, you are the only one I want to wake up next to. You are my one and only true love. I can’t live without you, Y/n. I don’t care what it takes. We will make this work.”
I smiled at the determination making his voice deepen. “I know. I’m sorry I left.”
Jin shook his head, causing his forehead to rub against yours and making you giggle. “There’s nothing to be sorry for. I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
