But Ultimately The Blame Lays With William. He Can Eat Shit And Die - Tumblr Posts

Can we take a minute to talk about Derek and Spencer investigating the first victim’s house in S07E05 “From Childhood’s Hour”?

A home where the father abandoned his family and the mother is loving but neglectful of her child because she struggles with her mental health on a daily basis and it’s a toss up if she’s going to be able to take care of her son or if he’s left to his own devices for the day?

Derek’s probably shaking his head because he thinks Spencer is worried about the veritable army of bacteria that’s lurking in that fridge (which might be true, scrutinizing an entire refrigerator full of expired produce is no one’s idea of a good time) but of course Spencer doesn’t want to see the kitchen; he already has a pretty good idea of what it’s going to look like since he lived through a very similar experience.

Spencer frequently had to fend for himself because on Diana’s bad days, it was either DIY meals or starve. So, he probably got into the habit of buying ready made frozen meals, sandwich fixings, or canned goods that could be warmed in the microwave, like the missing child has here, or received similar non-perishable food items from their local food bank. Anything that was filling and could last a long while. Plus, it most likely fell to him to clean out the fridge and take out the garbage. I doubt Spencer learned how to cook more than very basic meals until he moved into his first apartment.

And just like little Bobby, Spencer could come and go as he pleased most of the time, whether that was to school, the library, getting groceries, or playing chess in the park; he could go anywhere he wanted.

There’s also this episode’s killer’s theme of “wanting to stop your mother’s suffering” which–heinous murders and motive of punishing ‘bad’ parents aside–all of the children here wanted their mothers to not be in pain anymore because they bore witness to her suffering everyday.

I imagine Spencer related to that more than anything else.
