Basement Discoveries

in which a young girl has an epiphany

--------------------------

The door creaked open as the soon to be adult rushed down the stairs that lead to the basement. It was dark and cold, the only thing that one could hear was the girl’s feet hitting the stale M&Ms from when she was a kid.

Walking around, not being able to see anything, she ran headfirst into a beaded string that hung from what might have been the ceiling. Grabbing fistfuls of air, she finally grabbed ahold of the string, pulling on it only for light to illuminate the once dark but still cold basement.

Forgetting what she came down to the basement for she heard something heavy drop, looking for what caused the noise she saw an army green dust-covered photo album laying on the ground. Curious she picked it up only to notice a picture to be hanging out of the album, plucking it out she had seen that it was marked November 17th, 1952 in neat cursive handwriting on the back.

Flipping the photo over to the front was an image of a young man, that seemed to be in his mid-20’s, standing next to a maraschino cherry red fire engine in front of the house that the girl staring at the photo was currently standing in the basement of. It wasn’t the blinding color of the fire engine that had caught her eye instead it was the color of the young man’s eyes or to be more specific his iris’s.

They had shinned like sapphires under the sun, beautifully blue that they had almost seemed fake. However somehow, she knew that she had seen those eyes before as if they had been in her dreams haunting her. Taking her gaze off the man she came across another person in the image that of a woman that was maybe a few years younger than that of the man.

The woman was on the other side of the blazing red fire engine, her porcelain skin contrasting against the man's naturally tanned skin. Anyone who looked at the image could tell that the woman loved the man across from her, maybe it was the way she gazed at him longingly or the way her face lit up when looking at him.

Either way, even if the woman was not completely and entirely in love with the man it was known that the moments shared between them were cherished. Shaking her head slightly, the soon to be adult put the photograph back in the photo album only to set the album next to a hideous sand-colored leather handbag that she assumed belonged to somebody with a horrid taste in fashion.

Walking back to turn off the source of light that was illuminating the basement she had caught her reflection in a mirror that hanged on the wall and was supported by one short studded nail. Making a B line for the mirror she took more and more steps closer to it, the closer she got the more frightened she had become.

In her mind it was all an illusion though, in fact, it was every bit of reality, she knew from the very beginning that she had seen those blinding blue eyes before. She had known because they were staring right back into her own.
