Cishet Creators Dont Get The Im An Ally Pass By Making None Of Their Characters Homophobic/transphobic/whatever - Tumblr Posts

someone once asked me on a post why i dislike the no-lgbt-oppression trope in fiction, but i forgot to answer back then so i figured i should do it now!!! i’ll try to put it simply lmao

i don’t think it’s neccessarily a HARMFUL trope, and i don’t often see other lgbt people talking about it, so it’s really just a personal thing for me. i dislike it because it makes it feel too…fantastical? if that makes sense???

like, the lgbt community is literally built around the oppression we face. it wouldn’t be a Thing if we weren’t oppressed. that’s why the concept of pride exists. it’s why representation is important!!

i TOTALLY UNDERSTAND if lgbt creators feel uncomfortable with diving into that stuff, and would rather focus on self-love and happiness in their stories. but when a cishet person writes a story with lgbt themes and either erases or completely ignores the core aspect of BEING LGBT, it feels less like genuine representation and more like asking for brownie points. not saying they’re all guilty of this, but my immediate reaction is always “ugh, come on, you can do so much better than that”
