Are pirates just wet cowboys? Why or why not?

As someone who has both a pirate captain OC AND a cowboy OC, let’s analyze:

For starters, they both have a steed/ride. The ship and the horse can both be told: “Whoa. Easy girl.” Pirates and cowboys have also both wrangled their own captives to turn them in for bounty/loot. Cowboys also are trying to earn enough gold ingots and bars to purchase whatever they want, just like a pirate tries to plunder for lots of wealth. They both have guns, and aren’t afraid of shooting them.

Cowboys and pirates can work for a government official for the correct amount of coin, though I believe a key difference is the inherent trust the public eye has for one or the other (unless the cowboy is an outlaw). When the saloon hears there’s a cowboy in town, they are leery but otherwise hear him out. A pirate, on the other hand, always brings the connotation of a criminal, and people are automatically distrusting and even scared to run into them.

So, depending on the reputation, pirates can be wet cowboys. But more often than not, people aren’t as willing to trust a pirate over a cowboy.
