morgan's reaction to reid revealing he's never been to new york is so funny to me. maybe it's that he says his first line:

jj speaks:

i think it would be less funny to me if there wasn't a beat between his two lines because it gives the impression that he's just Stuck on this train of thought. if hotch hadn't stopped their silliness to remind them that they're in a crime show would he have kept going. "it's four hours in your gay little car! it's a 24 hour 34 minute bike ride! it's a 112 hour walk! what is wrong with you!"

im sorry im not funny derek morgan uhhhh idk if i should tag reid or jj im mostly talking about morgan here we i got the times from google maps van ness (where i THINK reid lives???) to new york in general. i know little of american geography so thos numbers might be totally off complete tangent but i always get so thrown off when americans talk about states like this like when im reminded how small the states are compared to our provinces what do you mean it's four-ish hours to drive several(?) states over. why is your country in such little pieces for context: from edmonton (capital city of my province) to the capital cities of the adjacent provinces (british columbia and saskatchewan it is 14hrs 17mins and 7hrs 22mins respectively if you drive and when i last visited bc we drove and it was eighteen-ish hours to get where we were going not fic criminal minds criminal minds rewatch criminal minds s01e17 a real rain criminal minds 1x17

man criminal minds is just full of these lines that never ever come back. nothing in this scene causes me immense pain in hindsight.

In a restaurant, a man in a dark top smiles to his right, eyes crinkling. He holds a pair of chopsticks in each hand. The subtitle at the bottom of the image reads: "You don't know how to use them, do you?"

okay. i love this scene. BUT. headcanon. this is not going to be angsty by the way. it's going to sound like it's going to be angsty at first but it's not i promise.

reid is a very insecure person, especially in the early seasons, and, given his past, has a tendency to take even very lighthearted teasing quite personally. so i have a headcanon that he went home genuinely embarrassed that he didn't know how to use chopsticks and resolved to learn. i could go either way on if it's out of "spite" (not nearly so strong, but i cant think of a better word) or self-consciousness.

anyway, sometime later, on a particularly bad case, they find themselves in a restaurant with chopsticks as the default utensil, and everyone starts (affectionately) ribbing reid before anyone's even started eating. at first, he defaults to offense/hurt/embarrassment, then puts two and two together. it's a really bad case. everyone is on edge...and they've chosen this restaurant specifically because reid not knowing how to use chopsticks provides levity they desperately need. if reid knows how to use chopsticks at this point? well. they don't need to know that. if he hasn't figured it out yet, he stops trying to.

(i have another, sillier version of this headcanon where morgan walks in on reid eating doritos with chopsticks so he doesn't get the flavouring on his fingers and gets through several minutes of affectionate bullying before going Hey. Wait a Fucking Minute.)

ANYWAY. this is longer than i wanted it to be and it might be better in my head but bottomline. idk. reid does sleight of hand im sure he could figure out chopsticks. but i think he knows the team needs some easy comic relief sometime. do you get me. do you see the vision.

i do Not like the ending of a real rain im sorry this may be controversial.

i get what they're going for with hotch shooting the unsub. i get the foreshadowing of the past case where hotch talked a man down who was then acquitted and went on to kill again. i get the parallel of the unsub killing people who he feels were unfairly acquitted and then hotch killing him out of implied fear that he'll be acquitted by a sympathetic jury. but if you're going to attempt a parallel like that and have a character make a choice like that you need to commit to it i think? there's not even a conversation about it. i dont think it's ever brought up again, hotch doesn't even say anything.

one scene on the jet, if it was well-written enough, could make me accept the ending even if i dont like it, but no. the episode ends with hotch shooting a man who is surrendering and everyone is apparently fine with it?

(i'd like to note that this is a criticism of the writing, not hotch. i think this is an out-of-character choice without justification beyond "one time i talked a guy down and he got acquitted so this time ill shoot the guy as he surrenders. and then keep my job somehow". it just feels lazy and weird.)

foyet is very different i will admit ive not actually seen that ep but i dont think i need to have watched it to say “beating a man to death after he kills your wife is different from whatever this is” negative i guess idk what to tag i do like this episode i just dont like this ending it doesnt sit right with me and again without further justification it feels very out of character like okay yeah one time hotch didnt shoot a guy and he got acquitted and went on to kill again but a LOT of the unsubs on the show have some reason behind what they do that could get them found ncr or i guess “insane” in the states should they just be shooting all those people? again i get there is the added layer here of hotch enacting a flavour of vigilante justice on the vigilante but again. for that parallel to work you need to commit to it you cant just go “okay episode is over now lol.” there are the ending news clips but those dont add anything new to me im sorry im rambling i just dont like this ending disclaimer that i am canadian and we dont even have life w/o parole much less the death penalty so that is affecting my viewpoint probably criminal minds rewatch criminal minds s01e17 a real rain not tagging the gen criminal minds tag or the hotch tag because. i dont know. this is a little more negative than my usual ramblings criminal minds 1x17
