The Wilmington native was currently scrolling through the New York Times online when he heard someone speaking to him. Ryan paused briefly as he thought about how it was kind of a bother if someone sat to him but he was too exhausted mentally and physically to say anything and so he shrugged. “Sure, whatever you want.” Ryan stated as he grabbed his cup of coffee and had a sip. “But if you keep rambling like that, I might just change my mind.” He was half joking but half being serious as Ryan was just not in a being around people mood as the stranger seemed like he was nice enough.
Aiden felt bad for causing a disturbance but he really wanted to sit down somewhere and just get to finally relax. “Okay. I won’t talk much, but thank you, person’s name who I don’t know,” he said quickly, opening up his phone. He began reading the final chapter of the book that he’s been reading for the past week. It was another Stephen King novel. Although Aiden wasn’t the biggest fan of horror films, he loved how enticing King’s books were. He continued to sip on his drink and look at his phone. He glanced up here and there. Feeling awkward, Aiden spoke again, although afraid the gentleman might just leave the table. “What ya reading there?”

Aiden was done for the day and was ready for some exercise. He opted out of the traditional exercise by going to the gym, running on the treadmill, and lifting some weights. He figured he’d throw around a football with his friend, Ryan, so that the two could talk and catch up while getting a work out in. Aiden texted Ryan to meet up with him at the empty football field downtown at six. He figured it’d be enough time for the two of them to be ready to hang out while the sun is out and they could get dinner after.

Getting out of bed lately for Ryan had been difficult and so when he saw that he received a text from Aiden he was more than happy to say yes to his friend. The sun was still up as Ryan left his apartment but he barely noticed as all he could do was try and stop from thinking about the horrible nightmares he’d been having lately. Thankfully as he arrived at the park he could see Aiden right away and was very glad for the distraction. “Hey bud, thanks for the text. It’s been too long.” Ryan said and punched him on the shoulder, “what’s new, how have you been?”
“Of course, no need to thank me. I figured we could exercise and catch up too,” he smiled back, tossing the ball at Ryan. “Nothing much. I’ve been in the middle of teaching summer school and just having little projects here and there,” clearly omitting the part that he was actually in the middle of working on his novel. He wasn’t exactly one to share the news of something like that, considering the fact that he didn’t want to seem like he thought he was a great author or anything like that. He was just dipping his toes in the pool, getting a little wet. “What about you? How’s life?”
ryanbenett:
Ryan very easily caught the ball and quickly threw it back at Aiden. Football had been something that Ryan had been actually able to keep up with whilst in the army (though still somewhat with precautions)…. But still - it was nice to be at it again back home where he didn’t have to worry so much about being in a blast of some kind or something like that.
“Teaching summer school sounds awful. We should hang out more.” Ryan replied and quickly grabbed his water bottle that was on the grass and took a sip while waiting for Aiden to toss the ball back at him. “It’s been better, I guess. This is a nice distraction from all the shit.” Ryan told him as simply as possible as he did not like talking about his feelings, he never had. Ryan just hoped that Aiden would understand and not get too upset at him or anything like that, it didn’t have to do with him, just with how Ryan had been raised.
“Greer texted me last night though…”
Though the two were friends, Aiden wasn’t one to share his personal life with many people. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Ryan, but the betrayal from growing up in the foster system ran deep in his heart and interfered with any budding friendships with others. “Yeah, we should definitely hang out more. I seriously never see the outside world minus going to the high school to teach.” Yes, Aiden talked about his job a lot. It was his dream job. Being a teacher was everything he ever wanted in life and he could probably talk about it until his very last breath.
Aiden listened to Ryan. “Oh, well that’s good to hear,” he simply replied. Aiden wasn’t going to push it. He heard Ryan bring up Greer, someone that Aiden had become more comfortable around. It didn’t feel like Ryan was saying that someone texted him after a good date or something, there was something behind it and Aiden couldn’t figure it out. “Oh, she did? What’s up with that?” Was there something Aiden was missing?

Ryan through the ball back at Aiden, “dude. It sounds like you’re working way too much. How do you even have time for a social life or like… for a girlfriend?” Ryan raised his eyes at Aiden and chuckled. “The next time we go out we’re going to the bar, I’ll be your wing man and help you meet someone.” Ryan went on checking his phone hoping that Greer might have texted him again since their encounter, but she hadn’t. Disappointed, he decided to forget it all together as she clearly didn’t have any left over feelings for him except for a drunken one night stand.
“I don’t know if it’s good or not,” he stated shoving his hands in his pockets, not sure if he was in the mood for football any longer. “She hates me right now, and I know because she’s told me as much.” Ryan went on not disclosing that their encounter had been a booty call. The surgeon didn’t know Aiden well enough yet to be discussing that kind of thing with him, not to mention, Ryan didn’t really talk about those kinds of things in general with others as it was. “Whatever, I’m over it.” He grunted, though he obviously was far from it. “Come on man, toss the ball.”
Aiden shrugged off the comment. To be honest, a girlfriend wasn’t even something that was on his mind. Sure, there were people that he could potentially be interested in, but he knew that a relationship took time and commitment, two things that he really didn’t have right now. He didn’t want to commit to something only to half ass it. He’s done it in past relationships and he didn’t want to go through the same cycle again. Friends with benefits were the closest thing Aiden was going to have to a relationship. “Well, I mean I have a sort of social life. I have weekends off and stuff and I get off earlier than most people do. I’m not down for a girlfriend right now. That’s so much time and energy that I don’t have to spend on another person,” he admitted. He wasn’t trying to be harsh.
“Wait, am I missing something? Did something happen between the two of you guys?” Aiden was clueless. Although he knew Greer in a different light, he wasn’t aware of her personal relationships with other men. It wasn’t a topic of discussion and it was something Aiden didn’t even try to ask about. He knew it was better than to ask the girl he was sleeping with about her love life. Aiden could tell that he wasn’t really going to find out what was going on between Greer and Ryan anyway so he continued to toss the ball along, walking backwards to keep a good distance so the two could toss the ball between one another.

Ryan nodded, “being a teacher definitely sounds like it has its benefits. Though I don’t know if I would fair well with having so much time on my hands. I’m going kind of stir crazy as it is.” He sighed and ran his hand through his hair which was a very ‘Ryan’ thing to do. “I dunno man, I think I have to find something to do until they find me fit to return on duty.” He hadn’t really told anyone about the fact that he was at home because they needed to do a psych evaluation on him because of some things that happened in Iraq. But if anyone, Ryan felt like he could trust Aiden.
“Oh… It’s a long story,” Ryan sighed and went to go sit on the bench that was closest to where they’d been tossing the football. Suddenly not so much in the mood to play around anymore. “We were kind of together in high school. And then I left without telling her. She hates me. With good reason. She was my high school sweetheart and we grew up together. In a nutshell.” Ryan explained. “And she booty called me the other night, I was drunk too so I went over…”
“Yeah. I love being a teacher. The students might drive me crazy, but I’m so grateful for the ones that are really kind to me and are eager to learn. I know school can be boring so I try my best to make it worthwhile for them. I want them to have a good high school experience.” Aiden listened to Ryan’s situation and just nodded. He wasn’t one to pry and if Ryan was going to talk about it, then Aiden would listen. Until then, Aiden just listened to every word Ryan said. “I see. Well I hope that they give you something to do. It sucks just being at home. I hope everything is okay though. I’m here for you man.”
Aiden felt his heart wrenching with every word that came out of Ryan’s mouth. It wasn’t that he was in love with Greer or anything. It was more that he felt that he had broken bro code at this point. He was unaware of the situation between Greer and Ryan and if he was aware, he wouldn’t have started anything with Greer. As much as the situation with Greer was nice and casual, it wasn’t worth losing a friend either. “Oh wow,” he said, taking a deep breath, unsure of how to put these things into words. “Oh man,” he managed to get out. “Look man, I need to tell you something and I really hope that you don’t hate me or try to beat me up or something. I respect you and cherish our friendship enough to tell you this to your face,” he said, hoping that this wasn’t going to start World War III.

“That’s awesome man. It’s important to do what you love.” Ryan smiled at Aiden, “I know you’re here if I need it. You’re a good friend bud. Okay, okay seriously. Enough sappy talk.” He told his friend and got up off the bench again where had had been sitting, “they haven’t given me anything to do yet but I’m going to start begging them to give me something. Because I swear… Just walking around the same old streets aimlessly is kind of depressing.” As Ryan listened to Aiden going on about what he’d just said about Greer, the surgeon couldn’t help but look up at his friend and raise his eyebrow curiously at him, “sure man. You can tell me anything.”
Aiden at this point was getting extremely nervous that anything else in the conversation seemed to disappear in his mind. It went in one ear and out the other. How was he going to even explain this without it sounding bad? He didn’t know exactly where this conversation was headed, but he had a feeling it wasn’t going to end well and he was ready for it. “I’m going to say it before I get nervous and not say it...” he trailed off. “So, let me explain. I never knew that you and Greer had a past. I don’t really talk to Greer about her past or whatever is going on. We’re friends, not super close, but we’ve been hooking up for a couple months now. I had a very very tiny crush on her, but that’s over now and it was honestly just a hook up for the both of us, I can reassure you. I wouldn’t have hooked up with her or done anything had I known this before. I don’t like to break bro code, which I clearly have. I know you probably hate my guts right now and I don’t blame you. I’m sorry for being an awful friend and I’m sorry that you had to find out this way. I don’t really discuss my personal relations with people, but I respect you enough to tell you. I hope you can find it in yourself to not want to punch me in the face.”

Honestly Ryan had no idea what Aiden could have possibly been hiding from him and so obviously he had no problem with his friend telling him whatever it was that was on his mind. “Alright… sure. Go ahead, I’m waiting.” Ryan shrugged his shoulders feeling a bit confused as to what POSSIBLY could be about to come out of Aiden’s mouth. What did come out of Aiden’s mouth, Ryan couldn’t have possibly guessed it coming and it was taking him a few moments to even process what was going on. “You’ve been…” Ryan went on about to raise his fists in the air but he didn’t because he knew that if he did that he’d take a swing at Aiden and the last thing he wanted was to get arrested or something like that which would set him even further back from returning to duty in the military and so instead he walked the other direction muttering under his breath.
Another few seconds later he went back towards Aiden, “you slept with Greer? Like… more than once? For a few months now or something?” Fuck. The doctor could feel his blood boiling but knew logically that it wasn’t Aiden’s fault, it’s not as if he knew that him and the blonde had a past. “It would be stupid to be mad at you though wouldn’t it? Greer and I aren’t together. We haven’t been since high school. I’m not gonna punch you but I am kind of pissed the fuck off. I feel like we’re better friends then this Aiden to not know who is in our lives or not.” Ryan went on rambling a bit, “if your face didn’t look like that punching you might be a different story. FUCK!” He yelled out kicking the ground with his shoe, actually feeling like he still wants to punch something but it’s obviously pointless to take his anger out on Aiden, so he doesn’t.
Aiden slowly took a couple steps back. He never really felt intimidated by Ryan, not until right now at least. This was uncharted territory for the brunette. He had never been in this situation. He would consider Ryan a relatively close friend, but the two never really disclosed what was going on in their love life so he had no idea that Ryan and Greer would have some type of history. Once he felt that he was a safe distance from Ryan, he finally answered back. “Yes, multiple times, but I really don’t think we need to be going into details. There’s nothing going on besides the fact that we were both horny and single and wanted to have fun,” he stopped, wondering why he felt the need to explain himself. Then again, this was his friend and he didn’t want to ruin a friendship either.
Aiden’s face dropped when Ryan brought up the fact that he felt they were better friends than this. “Look, I’m really sorry. I know that we don’t really discuss our love lives or whatever and I get that you are really mad right now. I would be too if the tables were turned. I need you to know that I would have never come near Greer if I had known the history between you too. I can’t promise you that I’ll stop being friends with her though. Outside of the extracurricular activities, I have learned to deeply care for her as a person and as a friend. I want you to both be in my lives and I don’t want to have to pick sides. Whatever happened to you and Greer is not my business unless you guys both want to tell me what’s going on. I get that this is such a weird situation to be in considering we’re pretty decent friends,” he paused, taking a deep breath. He felt the wind pretty much get knocked out of him from the anxiety he was feeling. “What happened between you two happened before I was even here in Wilmington and I’m not going to get involved in something that I have no part in. If you don’t want to be my friend, I understand, but I’d be really sad if that was the case.”
