The tumult of Osaka International airport brightens as you stand facing the line of people that had rushed upon the gate’s intercom. 

The last memory you have in this airport was when you had first arrived in Japan six years ago to pursue your dreams. 

Time feels like a distant memory now.

You remember feeling lost and afraid - having left behind everything you had ever known and venturing into an entirely different country. The idea of starting over felt bitter, and for the first few years, you found yourself homesick (more often than not, as much as you hate to admit) and seeking comfort from the stars. 

Things started to taste sweeter when you landed a job upon graduating college. 

Life in Japan seemed so permanent and everything was starting to look a little clearer. You were able to form new habits and routines, you were able to adjust and make new work friends, and you found that you spent less nights crying and more nights working. Still, on particularly heavy nights, you found yourself staring at the night sky and wondering how home was.

Standing back in the airport felt different from how it felt six years ago. This time, you were going home.

It’s been a while since you’ve been home.

The word leaves a foreign taste in your mouth. You don’t know when you stopped thinking of anything as home, but you still refer to it that way, even with its tendency to change through your years of knowing it.
